Hello everyone,

My name is Bryan, I'm 16 years old, weigh 240lbs :)0)

Here is my situation.
As of now I am doing online school to catch up with some of my credits I missed out on due to me slackng off In public school.

So I would love to take advantage of this situation to lose a BUNCH of weight for next year. So I can feel comfortable about my self in public. Also school.

Public school Was never a problem, I never got picked on. It's just that even though I never got picked on for my weight, I don't feel comfortable about myself (Who would being 16 and weighing as much as I do)

So I plan on going back to public school next year So I would like some help/suggestions.

First: Due to me having so long to lose this weight how should I do it?
I was planning on breaking it into small sections, Even then... I'm not organized at ALL. So I still would love some suggestions on how to go about doind this one.

Secondly: How much weight should I plan on losing? What is a healthy weight for my age?

Third: What are some excercise I could do? I was planning on walking/jogging but even then I don't know how much I should try to go for...

This is my BiGGEST concern... when I was younger (8-14) I used to ALWAYS be outside, Playing basketball, football, alot of other stuff. Even then I was big... I have always been big my entire life... I don't even remember eating that much when I was younger.

What is the easiest way to keep track of my calorie intake and whatever else I need to be watching out for ( Sorry for my lack of knowledge...)
What are some healthy food I could eat.

Also, What are some ways that I could speed up my metabolism?

If there is any thing else that is troubling me I will simply add it to this post.

Thanks ahead of time ^^

You are only 16 and growing, I don't think you should cut calories too much (unless you're really overeating junk food and gaining fat, then just cut to healthy levels). Just eat healthy, don't eat any junk food. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, eat good quality protein (like chicken breast and fish, not hamburger which is junky). Eat whole grains, not white bread/rice. Eat eggs, eat nuts.

Lose weight by doing things like running, doing push ups/sit ups, maybe enrolling in a martial arts class.

If you eat too little it's possible you could slow down your height growth (if you notice the children of immigrants from poorer nations are taller and larger than their parents because they're well fed, you can see this in Asians especially). And since you have a whole year before school, you can just lose weight at a moderate pace through exercise.

Ok....so heres my advice to you.

Losing weight comes down to calories in vs calories out. So you need to get yourself some kind of notepad and right down EVERY calorie you eat...do this religiously. Do not cheat and skip writing down calories, your just cheating yourself. Its really not that bad after a few days.

As far as exercise goes, walking is great! To make walking less of a chore, you can walk slowly for 2 minutes and then quickly for 2 minutes and keep that routine. Get yourself an Ipod or some kind of music you can listen to while you walk. Sports count as exercise so get out there and play!!! Just make sure your moving everyday!

Your young, so I wouldn't worry about speeding up your metabolism...i don't even know if thats possible. I will say this. My husband and I like to eat every 2 or 3 hours...we think that keeps our metabolism constantly running....as opposed to eating a big meal and then waiting 4 or so hours till the next meal.

Now, a healthy weight loss is only 1 or 2 lbs a week! Don't try to lose more or get discouraged if you don't. Losing more quickly will cause healthy issues, including loose skin or loss of muscle tone.

If you wanna write back with your height, i will be happy to find out how many cals you should be consuming for weight loss.

Thanks for you're reply.
As of now there is no way I could measure my height...
The only time I even took note of my height was when I had to go to the doctor. Other then being extremely overweight I'm pretty healthy I'd think ( Saying this due to me not getting sick in like 3 years... :p) I WILL Get back to you as soon as I can figure this out though...

Well ok....I'm only ESTIMATING your height at an average of 5'6" given your age AND that you exercise 3 dys a week.... and what I got was this.....

Maintenance: 2838 Calories/day
Fat Loss: 2270 Calories/day

Hm... Could you explain how that works?

The way i'm looking at it is that if I keep my calories under 2270 calories i'll lose a pound? Sorry... Just don't understand it

no need for apologies! thats what this forum is for! I can't say for certain how much weight you will lose. That depends alot on your own body and how it reacts. That 2270 SHOULD lead to a 1 to 2 lb loss a week. Now, once you have consumed that many calories for a couple of weeks you can decide based on your weight loss, if you should increase your cals or decrease them. Its up to you.

Alright, Thank you very much.
I will just Write down how much calories/ what I eat everyday for these upcoming weeks and adjust my excercise accordingly. See if that works out.

Thanks for the help ^^

Don't aim for more than a pound per week though, I recall reading that specifically for growing children/teens you don't want to lose too quickly because it could cause you not to grow as tall as you otherwise would have.

I dont' mean to be difficult, but I find this one hard to chew. I understand kids in underdeveloped countries have shorter kids due to malnutrition....but those are pretty extreme cases! I really really have a hard time believeing if a teen is losing 2 lbs a week he/she will not grow like normal.

I am not sure about this, but boys have their big growth spurt around the age of the OP. The body needs extra calories and good quality nutrients to make bones, muscles and all that. If he cuts out all junk food and focuses on eating healthy nutrients while working out he would probably lose some weight, and maybe even grow better. Drinking sodas and eating chips might not provide the nutrients for growth either.

I guess the OP should research it, I admit I could be wrong, but height is a really big deal for males in this society. Short guys really have a tough time all across the board. It's probably better to be fat for a few more years than end up short for the rest of your life.
