1200 calories + exercise

Hello

I have been consuming 1200 calories each day. Divided into 5 small meals.

I have been burning 500 calories each day. (1hour cardio)

Is this healthy? Will I lose fat? I do not feel hungry or dizzy during the day.

I currently weigh 210 pounds.

I am aiming for a 30 pound loss in 10 weeks.

1) 1200 is very likely too few calories.

2) 30 pounds in 10 weeks isn't healthy as the most you should be aiming to lose a week is 1% of your body weight.

Will you lose fat? yeah but likely also to lose lean muscle as you are not giving your body enough energy. It's also unlikely that you will be able to keep up 1200 calories. Might I suggest aiming for something you will be able to do for the rest of your life?

At your weight 1200 calories is NOT enough.

Please read the sticky posts about how to figure your calorie level. I'd bet that at your weight and height and given the amount of exercise that you're doing, you could eat around 2000 calories and still lose weight.

I also agree that 30 lbs in 10 weeks is pushing it. If you lose at that rate it will be a lot of muscle and lean body mass as well as fat.

nah, not a good idea....excersize AND less cals is what = the best weight loss routine. I'd up your cals and keep the excersize.

I have read it.

Would this be considered healthy?

+1800 calorie intake
-700 calories at the gym

If you read it, you didn't pay attention. :)

Read it again. Your dieting level is not 1800 calories. If you do the calculations, it'll tell you the best level to start at for your height and weight.

Don't worry about what you burn at the gym. That's a "bonus". Weight loss is all about what you eat - the right amount of HEALTHY food.

yea, Karas right on! The extra cals burned from the gym is just a bonus...don't put too much stock in it...those machines can't ever be really accurate anyways.

You keep asking the same question over and over and we're giving you the answer. Read the sticky post. Do the calculations. It will give you the number.

We can't tell you because (a) you haven't given us any information and (b) we aren't here to spoon feed information, but to help you and guide you into learning it for yourself.

Hello

I am a little confused now.

When I mentioned this:

"+1800 calorie intake"

You said 1800 is not my dieting level.

Now you are saying you do not know what my dieting level is.

Where exactly in the sticky can I find that info. I have read it.

I weigh 210 pounds and I am 5"9 - 5"8

Did you read THIS thread:
http://weight-loss.fitness.com/nutrition/40273-how-many-calories-should-i-eat.html

It's titled "How Many Calories Should I Eat?"

It's not going to hand you a number on a platter. The number is different for each person .. you need to figure your own number. Based on your current weight I can estimate that 1800 is not the number you're going to come up with ... but I can't tell you what the exact number is.

I'm not trying to be a witch about this - I'm trying to help you learn how to figure out the number for yourself. You can't ask someone every time your weight changes.

I appreciate your help and I understand that it may be very frustrating when a noob comes along.

I have calculated my BMR and it is around 2100.

Is this how much I should be consuming?

Yes :) I was just about to tell you to google "BMR calculator" to make stuff easier but you can still double check. As you lose significant amounts of weight, that number will change. That link Kara gave you explains perfectly but you do not want to eat under your BMR or too far over.

I know it's frustrating and we all want to calculate how many pounds we could lose if we just cut back to the max and increased to as much activity as we can tolerate, I used to do that. But just eating at my BMR I'm losing more than it says I should be if I do those numbers games. So that tells me my body is working with me, not against me.

And here's something else to think of. I used to think I had to start at 1200 calories, do 3 hours of exercise a day, etc. I'd jump in with this all or nothing attitude and sooner or later I'd hit a plateau that I couldn't get past because why? Because I'd left myself nowhere to go. I couldn't cut back my calories anymore or push harder than I already was. Eventually I'd quit. Thank goodness I figured out weight loss doesn't have to be that miserable process.

So yea :) Read the stickies as you have time, it's well worth it. You'll find there's alot of awesome info here and support. Good luck. ~Lisa

edit* I'm no expert and this is what I've drawn from what I've read, I'm sure there's more to it by far. So I can't stress enough for you to read the stickies when you have time and process the information for yourself. We're all different and well as our bodies and discovering what works is part of the journey.

That's not what the thread says, but if it works, go for it.

I was asking if that is what I should be doing. Is that what I should be doing?
Ok, I'm gong to try this one more time. :)

Please PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read the sticky posts in the forums. All the information you want is in those posts. What you should be doing is written all over this forum in a zillion different posts. READ THEM. Please.

For example, from the post I sent you to:

Remember that your BMR is not your maintenance calories.

Once you've determined your BMR, you'll use an activity multiplier to figure out what your Maintenance calories are.

In order to lose weight, you want to eat less than your maintenance. A good place to start is about 30% less than your maintenance. So subtract 30% from the figure you get and start there.

Without knowing any other information about you, there is no other help I can give you other than to tell you to READ THE STICKY POSTS. Read them - really really really read them. Pay attention to what you read.

But just knowing that you weigh 200 lbs tells me nothing else. I don't know if you're a man or a woman. I don't know how old you are. I don't know how tall you are. I don't know what kind of exercise you do. I don't know what kind of food you eat.

No one here can give you any useful advice without that kind of information. And without that kind of information, all we can do is direct you to the sticky posts so that you can figure it out yourself.
