Are my legs a lost cause?

Hi everyone,

I'll start off by saying that I'm 28 and have always put off doing ANYTHING physically involved. I don't know if what my lack of motivation was or what perhaps I was too preoccupied but I've never been an active person. Being a new year, I'm dedicated to getting into shape.

The curveball? I'm 5'1" and about 90 lbs, usually fitting size 0 (XS) clothes. This isn't due to me starving myself or not eating, I'm guessing it's genetics. My doctor says while I'm thin, I'm perfectly healthy although they've suggested I try to add more calories which I've started to do.

I've ALWAYS been very thin and had "chicken legs", which I've always hated. I really want nice shapely legs/thighs but don't know where to start. My apartment has stairs and I recently bought both a kettlebell and resistant bands. Any help is appreciated (sorry for the long post!).

Squats and lunges and, as you mentioned, increasing your calorie intake will help to build some muscle.

Yes, squats, lunges, deadlifts, etc... And to get definition you will need to fuel the muscle growth with food, with emphasis on protein intake. I know you're not happy with your body, but consider yourself lucky, you have a much easier task ahead of you than someone who is trying to lose weight, but you will still have to be disciplined both with your workouts and with your eating, in your case to get enough healthy calories. All the best.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Up until a month ago, I didn't regularly eat breakfast or snacks. It was lunch and dinner. I've since started to get more calories by eating breakfast (usually eggs, juice, fruit) and adding snacks at work (my fav now is jerky, getting some protein in).

What is a good starting point (reps) for squats and lunges?

oh, and no its not a lost cause!
give yourself a couple days between workouts of rest. & whatever you do, dont give up!!

I disagree with the bold part of your statement above. I can easily lose 3 lbs of bad weight(fat) a week. I can barely gain 3 lbs of good weight(muscle) in a month.

Losing weight is simple.

Thanks for the support everyone.

I've started with squats, lunges and calf raises with my kettlebell 3 times a week, break in between each day. I'm trying to slowly add more calories with an emphasis on protein and fruits/veggies, avoiding junk food.

=D

According to some research I did online, kinetic bands are very effective at improving the speed, strength, and endurance of your legs. A lot of athletes use them for speed training. Take a look at this video:
