odd chest complain

OK, first of all I have already seen my doctor who ran an ECG (all be it a week after this first happened) and it said everything was 'normal'.

I have a wierd sensation in my chest. It feels like a strong pressure, its not peircing and I am not having palpatations, its as if I have a load of tar or liquid on my chest (and more my heart) this is how it feels anyway, I don't know if thats possible- its probably not.
I can only describe it as that feeling you get after a very very hard workout- that 'burning' sensation you get in your lungs and heart which says "I really worked out, huh?!" only it isn't going away! Its been like this for 3 days now and is making me feel quite shakey, below par.

I also have generally lost my energy, a workout is alot harder this week (I normally find this happens every 3 to 6 weeks- everything slows down then picks up again after about 10 days and I get a lot of energy for about 10 days...an odd cycle I don't understand as yet- unrelated to my periods before anyone suggests!)

This is the second time this has happened with my chest added to it- the first time was about 6 weeks ago and went away after about 48 hours. This time its been already 72 hours and its still affecting me. I don't feel panicky, just very tierd and sore.

The lack of energy every 3 or 5 or 6 weeks has been happening for about 8 months now and I have no idea why it happens. I don't know if its related to the chest thing or just a coincidence.

My workouts are generally all cardio, I do between 7-10 hours a week of just cardio (not including stretching or warm up/cool down) across 5 days and 1 hour of that is using weights and weight machines. Its been cut back from 10-12 hours a week about 9 months ago. I really don't think its my workouts but I don't know what else to blame- I eat very healthily and plenty of fresh fruits and steamed veg. I don't 'do' refined foods and drink alot of water every day.

Does anyone have anything similar happening to them?

You didn't provide much vital statistics. I see on your profile that you're female, but have no idea what age. Next time, provide your gender, age, height, weight.

A static EKG, i.e., under no stress, can be insufficient for diagnoses. I have had one or two EKGs annually for years but neither caught the two cardiac issues I had. So, you might want to consider seeing a cardiologist rather than a general practitioner if you have not done so already.

Thanks for the reply.

Am female, 29 yrs and a healthy weight (BMI 22.5/23- it hovers!). I am 5'7" if it makes any difference and live in the smog filled capital of the UK :D

Thanks for the heads up. Went again to see the doctor today who is certain its indigestion. I disputed it but not really sure how to argue it out as its so hard to describe! Without the doctors say so I cannot get any help with this and she doesn't seem to think its anything but indigestion. Maybe I need a third opinion. Just so annoying!

I know no one here can diagnose and I am not looking for a diagnosis but I am not sure what can go on with chests other then heart disease/heart attacks and indigestion (which is not really the heart). Just seems odd that it comes around about an hour after the gym and does not go away for up to a day later. If I don't go to the gym theres nothing there most times. Its now getting on for a week where I have had this 6 days out of 7, (2 of those 7 days were not spent at the gym.) Does anyone have any links to any reputable websites?

Unfortunately, it could be a lot of different things...

It's possible that the pain is a symptom of overtraining. While the amount that you're running isn't a whole lot, the fact that there isn't a resistance training supplementing your cardio isn't a good thing. But what you're describing is also symptomatic of pericarditis, and infection of the fluid surrounding your heart. Because of the proximity to the heart and lungs, you should keep a very close eye on this one and direct any changes in directly to your doc.

Thanks for the advice!

I thought for a second there it may have just been heart burn as it went away for a day but came back again as soon as I began working out again. Began halfway through my workout this time and I left the gym to get somewhere, ran very late so didn't get a chance to eat, meaning I had not eaten for 3 hours post workout and 4.5 hours overall yet I still had this chest pressure and pain. Cough came along too- looks like I'm going back to the doctors again, this time to explain why I don't think its heart burn!

Thanks again- its good to know I am not going mad and that it could infact be something other then heart burn! I just hope whatever it is it goes away as its really beginning to irritate me now!

I would look into pulmonary problems, and possibly a chest ultrasound (even though you're of good age and weight).
