Lossing weight without running?

I have run into a delema. I have always been very active and never really had to worry about my weight getting out of control. When I did feel as though I was putting on unwanted lbs, I would just run for a couple months and the problem was solved. With in the last 4 years or so, a few things have changed. In addition to getting married and having children, I have up on 65lbs. That weight is mostly because I have had ankle, back and knee issues which has kept me sidelined. If it wasn't one thing, it was another. Lately I've decided to start working out again to loss weight. However, after the 1st week, my knee is again acting up. I don't believe theres anything out of the ordinary going on with my knees, its just wear and tear from not properly warming up and stretching before I did anything while I was younger. Now getting back to my point. Does anyone have any recomendations on loosing weight without walking, or running as an option? I would like to swim at our local Y, but the monthly fee is too much. I've got my diet down, I just don't know how to do this with out my bread and butter (running). Thanks!

I think this will be different for everyone....

Last year I went from 185lbs to 149lbs in about 3-4 months and ALL I did was better my diet, drink lots of water and stopped eating fast food..

I added the following to my diet

tuna
salmon
boneless/skinless chicken breasts
sharp cheddar cheese (by a block, cut some into cubes, eat as a snack during the day)
lots of veggies (mostly canned)
lots of fruit (mostly canned)
WATER WATER WATER
stopped eating after 9pm (any snack after dinner was a personal size bad of salt/pepper popcorn)

I also made sure to have PORTION size meals.. at first it did not fill me up, then I got use to it.

Again this may not work for everyone but for me it did.. I did NO exercise at all.. just watched what I ate, added lots of water and ate a better diet

Good luck

You can lose a ton of weight without running (in fact when it comes to fat loss, slow steady state running is not the most ideal).

Try a workout like this at home with no equipment:

Do 10 pushups, then do 10 bodyweight squats with no rest in between. Keep alternating back and forth between those two exercises for 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes, rest 2 minutes.

Then do 10 chair or bench dips followed by 10 burpees with no rest in between. Again, keep alternating back and forth between those two exercises for 10 minutes.

That's it. Do that a few times a week and change up the exercises every couple of weeks or so and you're good to go (assuming you get your eating together).

What about a bike??

A bike will work. Do intervals on them. Start off with a 3 minute warm up at a medium speed then at the 3 minute mark hit it as fast as you can for 30 seconds. When I say hit it, increase your resistance as well as your speed, which will provide more work than just increasing your speed. after 30 seconds is up, slow down to a low speed (and low resistance) for 90 seconds. then after 90 seconds, go at it again with the higher resistance and higher speed. Do 7 of those high resistance/high speed cycles and then cooldown for 3-5 minutes. Great fat burning workout in about 20 -25 minutes.

Try the Cross Trainer or Elliptical.

It is alot less impact on your knees and it still allows you to sweat out those calories.

I normally burn upwards of 600 Calories in just an hour on the elliptical.
