Looking for alternative for running/walking.

Hi all.

I have bilateral and anterial compartment syndrom as well as on my calves. Basicly knee down all screwed up.

I'm scheduled for surgery but that's long way out. While I'm waiting I want to do something to stay fit.

Does anyone know good alternative to running and walking? Swimming is out because I'm alergic to chlorine/bleach (or whatever they use to senitize swimming pool water)

I have tried stationary bikes and rowing machines but my muscle gets tired too quick before I run out of breath. Running and hill walking was good as it pushes you out of breath before muscle gets tiring. I liked that. Any alternative exercise would give same effect and result?

thanks.

Go with biking. It's completely non weight bearing so it virtually takes away all of the stresses of running. I know it's rough in the beginning, but keep at it. If you have to, put the resistance level lower and pedal faster - that will switch to more of an endurance type workout vs. muscular tiring. Work your way up. You'll get there. Alternatively, try swimming in non-chlorinated water if you can. My pool happens to be that way. I'm sure there are others around, or you could find a lake? :)

Thanks for the quick reply. :)

I will try lowering resistance while pedalling faster on bike next time. When I tried it last time, it didn't occur to me to pedal faster, hence didn't feel any cardio workout. Defenitely good call. Come to remind me that simple things are easy to miss! :p

And you are correct on endurance part. That was what I'm after. Surely I wan strength but but my job requires me endurance more than lifting heavy weight. It's like I rather be able to keep going for an hour with 20kg backpack, rather than squat 8 reps of 80kg.

I really wish there was lake nearby or even beach safe to swim around where I live. Unfortunately I live and work in the city. It sucks. Because I love being out in the wild. One day I can find a job that allows me to live and make living in the wild.

I really want something hit my cardio/heart rate hard rather than muscular endurance, meaning that lung capacity and able to go on without running out of breath too quickly. I know muscular endurance goes along with it, but rather I want to place priority on cardio itself than anything else.

Thanks. :)

i had a stress fracture in my leg and i also couldn't do cardio. i would use a arm peddle bike don't know if it is available to you. elyptical machines are low impact and yes for sure a bike. i would also do cirsuit training which would keep my heart rate up pretty high through my entire workout.

Haha, that's kind of funny that you didn't think of that. But go for it next time. Lower resistance will be more "cardio" anyway, in terms of lowering your RHR and increasing cardiac efficiency, and that's what you're looking for.
