New to the forum (sorta)

Hi, My name is Wesley. I live in Greenville and in Goldsboro, North Carolina (I live in student living in Greenville but I'm always going back to Goldsboro)

I'm 5' 11" and about 175 lbs at the age of 19.

I'm new to excercising and I was wondering what "at home" exercises I can do and what a good routine is.

My upper body is so weak I can't do a lousy pull up (well I can but not properly).

I wouldn't mind working on my lower body too, I know the ladies love a man with a nice booty.

I've tried P90X, it seems too extreme for my level and I just can't stay committed. Can anyone give me pointers on staying commited and what not?

I think the only exercises I've done is late night "internet surfing" if you catch my drift.

I would like to have nice pecs/pecks (don't know which is considerred correct), biceps, abs, and ass (pardon my language).

I heard the best workout for abs is actually hanging from a bar and lifting your legs towards your chest.

I could really use a confidence boost and I know having my dream body would boost it up some bit. I don't want to be buff and all that. For a visualization of the kind of body I want:

(Yes, its one of the guy from those dumb supplement ads)

Please any help would be greatly appreciated!

and ass (pardon my language).

Hey, we don't accept bad language round here, you should be banned!!!!

:D

Training from home should be too difficult, do you have any equipment already? If not you could look into sandbag training, it's very cheap and very effective.

We also have a bodyweight training section that would be ideal to look at for home training

At your height and weight it doesn't seem like you have too much bodyfat, but keep in mind that diet is of utmost importance here. The exercise you're talking about is a hanging knee raise, and it is a great one.

You can make your own stuff at home for cheap. If you're interested, I can find a few websites that teach you how to make "blast straps", medicine balls, sand bags, etc. on your own at home. They're almost always much cheaper than the real thing too. If you have things like that, it's not hard at all to at least start at home and maybe later progress to a gym if you want.

Starters I would say go with the basic bodyweight stuff if you can't even do a pushup. Gotta start somewhere. Here are some good exercises:

Pushups
Dips
Prisoner Squat
Single Leg Romanin Deadlift
Reverse Crunch
Plank
Lying Supine Hip Extension
Inverted Row
Assisted Handstand Pushup (put your feet on a chair and get into a pike position rather than a full handstand)
Calf Raise

I think that covers just about everything. You can do lots of different things though, depending on what equipment you have and/or are willing to buy/make.

Good advice here.

I like these links for fitness

When away from weights I absolutely can't praise hindu push-up and dive-bomber’s enough. Do lots of pull-ups, and squats as well.

sorry but that dude is buff...don't know what you are talking about.

Thanks guys!

I can do push ups but only like 7 or 8 to the max. *embarrassed*

No I don't have a lot of body fat. Heh, if I wasn't too embarrassed about my body I would post some pics, when I get the results I want I'll post some before and after pics though haha.

All of your advice is great though but I guess when I said at home exercises it was too general. What I meant was, without much equipment because...well I lack the equipment (I got the Iron Gym though thats a plus :)) I'll really look into home made equipment. I'm kind of poor, working at a 1 shift a week serving job (I know I hate it)

Typhon, I just read that last part about bodyweight training, I'm really going to look into that too.

And Ride On...I'm sorry but I don't know what most of those exercises are, I guess I should cruise the site a bit to find out what they are haha.

And Johnny when I think of buff I think of, well...when you google image search bodybuilders.

What would yalls suggestion be for reps, sets, and nutrition?

With regards to sandbag training like I mentioned, there are a few pointers here
Using sandbags will allow you to do things like squats and a heavy enough weight to work your legs properly. They’re also great for grip training, shrugs etc…

As for reps, a lot of newbs find it good to start out using 3x10, it’s a decent intermediate point between strength and endurance training. It’ll give you hypertrophy, strength and increased endurance. As you’re doing 6-7 press ups at a time you could try doing something like 5x5 for those and once you can complete all sets and reps just add some weight on your back like a rucksack (sandbags come in handy again :))

Make sure you’re eating enough to gain muscle though. Aim for about 500kcals above maintenance, this site can help you work that out (on the activity level section you need to type something in the box and then delete it for the options to coem up for some reason, technical glitch I imagine) and try and get about 1g of protein for every lb of body weight
