Would like some advice

Alright, so I know I'm brand new here but I've made a decision to change the way I live my life and I want to stick to it.

About me:

I'm male, 27 years old with the wife and 2 kids, and dog thing, debt up to my ears, living the American dream.

I'm also 245lbs and 5'6" (weight as of this morning). Now obviously that puts me in that "tremendously overweight, painful to look at with or without clothes on" category. My usual activity level is "non-existent" until recently.

I work in an office, sitting behind a desk all day. My standard day would look like: wake up, shower, get dressed, get in car, drive to work, walk to desk, maybe walk up/down 1 flight of stairs 1-2 times a day, get in car, drive home, eat, sit at computer until tired, sleep. Yes, I was only eating 1 meal a day. Occasionally I would eat a snack at work during the middle of the day, and more rarely, a full lunch.

About 2 weeks ago my wife and I decided to make a lifestyle change. We stopped drinking juices/sodas, and I personally started eating breakfast and having a snack more often for lunch. Following this decision, we also joined a gym a week and a half ago. I've been very very good at going to the gym and I'm excited to lose weight. I have a family reunion this Christmas and I want to blow my family away with my new physique. And then, next year is the 10 year high school reunion, I have a year to be in great shape by the time that reunion takes place so I'm not that chubby boy from high school anymore.

Goals:
I've read all over this site to stick with one goal so my primary goal is weight loss. I realize for me that ANY lifestyle change in nutrition and exercise habits is going to make a huge impact simply because they weren't considered before and I didn't do anything. But now I want to keep up with my kids, take them on runs, show them that being healthy is where it's at. I think the hardest thing about this for me is going to be starting off slow and getting my body used to exercising. I've done some light weights and heavy cardio almost every day for the past 10 days.

I've got a resting heart rate of 56 so doing the math, my target heart rate is between 145-175, right?

Anyways, I'm trying to stick with mainly cardio here, but I get bored using the same machine every day. Is it ok to change machines up on a daily basis as long as you stick with the same routine time wise? I want to work up to being able to HIIT train but I know that's a ways off.

I've read that I can muscle train and I burn more calories a day also, so with all this information, it's hard for me to put it in order.

For a pure beginner, what would a good exercise regime look like for the first 2 months or so to cut weight?

Thanks for reading my long message.

Justin

PS, I signed up for that online calorie counting diary thing too so I'm already counting those. Now I just need to make healthier calorie choices... Baby steps.

You need a personal trainer.

Ah, sorry. Forgot to mention. I can afford a gym, but not a trainer. Or conversely, I can afford a trainer but not a gym. I'll stick with gym for now, simply because my wife also benefits from it, and my children love the pool.

I've read all the stickied information contained in the fitness, nutrition and weight loss forums before I bothered to post and learned some great tips about what I need to do. I will refer to them often as I continue this journey. That fitday free calorie counter thing allows you to set a weight goal so I'll use that as my journal to track my progress.

One tip I learned was that muscle burns more calories a day than fat, and that if you're fat, toning exercises are useless. I'm glad I learned this early on because a friend of mine suggested toning exercises which is what I've been doing for 10 days now, not muscle building exercises.
