Another new guy here

How's it going folks! Dolan is the name, and if my username isn't a dead giveaway, I'm a Jeep FREAK :costumed:

I've been doing steady work outs at home for about two months now to improve my upper body and mid section and have been happy with the results so far. I wish things would happen a bit quicker, but I guess I need to change my habits a bit more, ha. And I imagine reg'ing for this forum isn't helping me burn off my Tri-tip/Broccoli dinner (Don't worry, it wasn't a huge serving  ), but I'm looking forward to reading some great advice and learning a lot along the way.

Welcome to the forum. :)

First thing you can do to get your upper body to grow is Squats and deadlifts.

I'm all for them, but I've got to get a gym membership first, and I'm pretty locked in about joining an Anytime Fitness that's about a mile from my house. Got a free 5 day pass from a friend to check it out.

I've been doing push ups, pull ups, chin ups, curls, and I can't remember their names but a lot of the lifts they taught us in P.E. in school. If it helps any I'm 5'3, about 125 lb, and already have a pretty good physique (sp), I just want to improve on it a bit.

And thanks for the quick welcome :action11:

Haha well I'm glad I stray away from Taco Bell!

(I have to admit, I'll eat it if I'm hungry and have no other choices...)

While watching that video I had to give a try to a few burpees, not enough to break a sweat but I'll give 'em a try first thing tomorrow.

I generally try and do my work out stuff in the morning after I wake up and have a quick up of coffee to get me going, and late at night before I go to bed. If I'm not working, I'll randomly do push ups, chin ups, pull ups, etc to keep me from being bored. Any drawback to doing random sets like that, or the more the better? Also heard it's best to try and get up early to do your work-out, is this true too?

I've always been a runner, but have slacked for the past year or so. I'm hell bent on getting up a bit early and going for a run tomorrow, and plan on making it a routine. I also take my dog for long walks at least 4 days a week, figure it's good for both of us!

I eat breakfast then workout 1 and a hlaf to 2 hours later, but its up to you really.

Why not take the dog running??? Would be good for him too no???

Actually I should... I've been living with my dad for a couple months since I moved back from Tahoe so I can get back on my feet here, and he spoils the HELL out of my dog, and doesn't care how much I $%*&^ at him not to, so he's put on a few pounds since I've moved back down here. I'm sure he'd love to go with me.

Is it better to wait a good hour or so after eating, so you have enough time to start digesting what you've eaten? Really I've never beem much of a breakfast eater, I usually have my coffee and a piece of fruit, maybe a bowl of cereal if I've got some in the house. I realize it's probably better to eat a balanced breakfast to get you going in the morning, I just don't feel hungry every morning, but always have my coffee :) Used to be really bad about putting a good amount of cream/sugar in my coffee, I've cut back quite a bit on that too

Y should wait at least an hour and a half- 2 hours for the food to digest. Then have a post workout meal afterwards.

I never used to eat breakfast, but after a while i got usedto it and now i wouldnt even think of not eating it.

I figured it could become a routine thing after a while, and I'm all for that.

Any advice on what to have as a post work-out meal? Hope I'm not asking too many questions, I'm not new to the forum scene and know how to search, I just don't

LOL i got nothing better to do.

A few options:
2 scoops of gatorade and 2 scoops of whey protein powder.

A banana and chocolate or white milk.

A solid food meal will sufficeif you dont want to use one of these.

If you dont want to buy protein powder you can mix any or all of these together for an easy meal: milk, eggs, peanut butter, yogurt, fiber supplement, berries, orange juice, bananas, oatmeal etc.

Haha neither do I on a rainy Sunday night so I feel ya :jump1:

I've seen Whey protein powder at a lot of places, in fact I think I saw some at the grocery store down the road when I was in there yesterday.

I eat most the the items you listed above on a regular basis, just not in one meal like that. I've always liked oatmeal, now I've got an excuse to eat more ha!

But for the Gatorade/protein powder- just mix 'em together in one glass? Whats the prupose oh the whey protein? I'm all for any information I can get, I hate picking through stuff I find on Google lol

EDIT: googled whey protein and got that covered!

I wouldnt buy it just anywhere cuz you want quality. GNC or some other nutrition store or onlin is best. Stick to a quality brand like Optimum Nutrition.

Great, oatmeal is awesome. I mix mine with a scoop of protein powder, trail mix, small amount of milk and blueberries. Sounds gross but i love it. Just make sure you get carbs, protein, good fat and fiber at each meal.(exept maybe post workout where you are better off with less fat and fiber cuz it slows absorption but like i say later you can get away with normal food if you choose)

GOD NO, thats gross..lol.

Just an easy way to add some protein to your diet cuz its quick, digests fast and tastes good. Chocolate rules.

Protein powder isnt 100% necessary, especially in the beginning. If you have the extra money or need an easy option for one or two meals thenits good, but you can live without it if you choose. Like i said a banana and milk would work too.

Hope that makes sense cuz im tired as hell.

Going to bed now so i can get up and workout.

Good luck.

LOL good to know, I was kind of wondering on the Gatorade thing! Your response gave me a good laugh too... And your oatmeal mixture doesn't sound gross, actually sounds quite appetizing with trail mix and berries.

Thanks for the info on what whey protein to buy, I'll be sure to check out GNC or the like. There's actually a sports nutrition place right next to the Anytime fitness down the road from me. I don't mind spending the money on it either, it's worth a shot anyway!

Thanks again for all the great info, I've truly learned a lot with what research I've been doing tonight. Looking forward to learning more!

I had a few things I wanted to pick up from Trader Joe's so I bought a container of their Whey Protein while I was there. I know people who use it daily (not for fitness reasons, just to add protein into their diet), and no negative comments from any of them. I've been happy with everything else I've ever boughten there, so I figured it was worth a try for $12

welcome :)
