Americans Fatter in 37 States

My grandad used to tell me off for cutting all the fat off my gammon and said that a little bit of fat never hurt anyone. He died after about his 10th heart attack at the age of 72

I had to google "gammon" LOL

My British step-dad would be so disappointed

Daaaang, someone on here said they hardly see obese people...

I swear, I see so many of them, its hard to remember what normal healthy people look like anymore!! (Well, until I leave work and go to the gym.)

I work in a pharmacy and like 90% of our patients are obese... I can hardly stand helping them anymore because they are super impatient, rude, and LAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm racking my brain here trying to think of just one (obese) pt who actually WALKS inside to the pharmacy vs. coming through the drive thru. Or just one who is polite vs. being rude and demanding... Can't think of anyone.

On top of it, when they do come through our drive thru, they usually have bags of some type of food sitting next to them. We have one who is notorious for telling us things like, "I know my weight is killing me and I know that I wouldn't be on 15 drugs every single month if I just lost weight, but I just can't do anything about it."

I just don't understand people!!

Over 50% of the people I see on the street are fat to one degree or another. About 25% are skinny or anorexic, 20% are within "normal" range, and the other 5% are fit. I honestly can't believe how many fat and out of shape people I see.

On the news last night there was a pediatrician stating that 12-16 year old obese children have the cardiovascular systems of people in their 40s (who are out of shape). They have plaque everywhere in their blood vessels. The Dr. said these children will probably not live to see their 40th birthday unless they do something about their problem now.

When I see people eating salads I think "Wow, they must really hate themselves to live in that sort of deprivation."
I don't consider myself deprived at all just because I happen to love raw vegetables & salads. I actually prefer raw to cooked vegetables, so eat a lot of salads when I am able to fix them for that reason. There are so many great tasting things (not necessarily high fat) that you can put into salads--right now I am hard cooking some eggs to put in one. You don't have to use high fat dressings to make them tasty, either.

Snakegirl, do you know the individual health histories or circumstances of the individuals that you see who are so obese, impatient & rude? I mentioned it in another post earlier, but I still don't believe any of us have the right to judge another person who is not like us when we know nothing about their life or challenges.
...they are super impatient, rude, and LAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! & ...Or just one who is polite vs. being rude and demanding... Can't think of anyone.
I get the impression Snakegirl, that you think ALL people who are getting prescriptions are rude & lazy. If you rarely see them anywhere but at the pharmacy, are you basing your keen observation skills that they are *lazy* simply because the majority of them use the convenience of the drive up if they have no other reason for being there? Also, I am not rude nor do I believe myself to be lazy. I admit I do get impatient sometimes when I have called my prescriptions in a day or two ealier (and I refill them every month at the same time of month, rarely w/ any changes) & get a ride from someone to go pick them up & the pharmacy hasn't bothered to fill them until I'm at the window, or they tell me, "Oh, you'll have to come back tomorrow, we don't have enough of it." It bugs me because people often don't like to have to wait when they are already helping me out by giving me a ride.

I detest having to take prescriptions but never take it out on the very people I depend upon to help me stay alive. I appreciate my pharmacists. In fact, once when I was sick & having a 3-way conversation w/ my doctor & pharmacist, the pharmacist suggested using some herbs that did actually work instead of adding another presctription to what I already take. I appreciated that.

You must live in a place where all people are rude or something, because not all people where I live are rude. It's interesting, I think it might just be a matter of perception, because the rudest people I've ever seen where I live were the able-bodied guys wearing ski clothes & that had out-of-state plates & parked in handicapped parking when I was going into the store to get my prescriptions & some groceries. (Back when I was still driving) I had to park quite a ways a way from the door because of them, there were no places left for people that were handicapped. When I left a polite note on their windsheild suggesting that they not park there in the future because people w/ physical challenges needed them , they called me (unprintable) names & flipped me off!

I agree w/ the majoirity of you, however, in that it seems harder to find/see people that look healthy & fit. It is much easier to see all the people that are overweight & obese, but I think it just depends upon where you are to make those observations.

:D Sorry. I was just playing off the whole "I see fat people and wonder how they get that way" comments. It was not a serous statement.

I just get amused at how much focus is given to people we don't even know and how they live their life.

What?? No, my entire post was strictly regarding obese people that I see on a daily/weekly basis. I wasn't talking about anyone else.

I help many other customers who are quite friendly and polite.

Organizations to Help

There are some organizations dedicated to fighting obesity. Action Against Obesity is probably the most vocal one. They're helping a lot in the campaign to get trans fats banned, they want childhood obesity to be regarded as child abuse, and they're playing a role in allowing employers to charge higher insurance premiums to obese employees. They also say some crazy s*** sometimes though, their spokeswoman went on TV near the end of American Idol a couple years ago and said that Jordin Sparks shouldn't win because it'd be like telling young girls that it's ok to be fat, lol.

Please forgive my misunderstanding of what you wrote. It sounds like ALL OBESE people you see needing prescriptions are rude impatient, rude & lazy.

Well, snakegirl, I am unhealthy & taking prescriptions now w/ what I am told has ongoing, lifelong ramifications because of a minor injury caused by someone else's carelessness while working out at a gym. I have been trying for over ten years to change that, so I do not consider myself lazy. I admit giving up at different times after going for months w/ no respite before having a setback of getting very ill again, then getting back up & trying all over again. Isn't that the definition of persistence?

Were you aware I was physically challenged from having a wreck 30 years ago where I was unconscious a month, then had to relearn to talk, feed myself, read, write, walk, EVERYTHING again? Oh yah, I then got an undergraduate degree president of an honor society while Music Director of the university's radio station (after being Chief Announcer!) & working, then going to grad school while working FT+ before working 10 years as a professional. Then that minor injury sent me back almost to the beginning yet again & I am back to using a cane, & am having major problems w/ coordination & balance. I am trying yet again to change what has happened to me by forcing myself to get out of bed, exercise, eat well & swim despite incredible pain that can totally incapacitate me at times. But because I am obese & taking prescriptions, I guess you would automatically consider me to be

because you have never seen anyone obese who wasn't.

I think your insistence that obese people are ALL that way whether or not you know ANYTHING about them or their circumstances is ludicrous. Why don't you stop making judgments about other people & insisting that ALL are one way or another based upon what is apparently your limited experience & start paying attention to your own shortcomings? I feel sad when I meet people like you in person or online. I hope you don't have to have any challenges happen to you for you to learn to be less judgmental. My extremely fit, healthy & strong sister (who used to be in the Army) used to sound just like you until she came down w/ Rheumatoid Arthritis. I wished she didn't have to get sick to learn compassion.

I will no longer respond to your comments here because it has gone beyond ridiculous & has nothing to do w/ focusing on being fit & healthy or trying to be. I suspect nothing I say will change your mindset, anyway. Maybe life will.

Despite people like you I plan to Keep on keeping on!

I am really sorry that you seem so offended by my single post. I do not know you, and I don't know what you look like, or anything else for that matter. I think you are really off topic here from this initial thread. I am sorry you are so upset but it's creeping me out the way you are reacting over my post.

I was talking about ABLE BODIED, CAPABLE people who are extremely obese and unhealthy because they CHOOSE to be. The type of people who literally look me in the eye, face to face, in person, and tell me things like: “I do realize that the majority of my health problems are caused by my obesity. I just don’t feel like working to change that.” Or when they tell us their diets, asking for advice, and their entire diet consists of fast food and grease! Heck, like as if they don’t know what the heck life would be like without Pizza Hut, McDonalds and Taco Bell, etc… Or, “I know I should try to start exercising but I tried once, and decided it isn’t worth it…” I have actually had people tell me these things!!! I am not the type of person to attack someone w/ ANY disability, under any circumstance ever, esp. when I HELP people with various disabilities all day long! That takes compassion- to day in and day out do this type of job! In fact, if you do not have compassion, you should not be in the medical field PERIOD! Who are you to judge how compassionate of a person I am or anything else about me? This is just crazy!! I have worked at the same pharmacy for 6 years and know them all (well about 98%) by first and last name, as well as their histories and even family members, etc. This is a small town and these same people have been coming here since the pharmacy opened, 6 years ago. I do not know why this is so important or why I should have to explain something in so much detail that has nothing to do with the initial topic here...??

I will not respond to any other cut-n-paste attacks from you! This issue is over!!!! Now, have a great weekend!

This is when you know it's getting out of control in america!

WOW...If I compared myself to that I wouldn't feel so bad. I compare myself to a healthier myself, however, so...I've got more work to do so I NEVER end up like that!!

I should copy & post that picture on my freezer door to remind me...to Keep on keeping on!

When she turns 18 I'd hit it.

Glad to see Michigan is right up there. One paradox I've noticed is people bag on you constantly for being into fitness. Cracks me up. I get **** for the food I eat and for the fact that I exercise.

In Alberta, I think we are going to get a $500 tax write-off in 2009 for having a fitness club membership. But we'd actually have to USE it.

The last time I visited California, I couldn't believe how many fat people I saw (I'm sure 50% of them were from out of state just vacationing). REALLY fat people stuffing their faces with crappy food. And their kids are eating the same crap as their parents are.
