Please help us improve our routine

My wife and I started a exercise program 6 months ago. Its gone very well but its getting harder. I would love to get some ideas on how we can improve our routine.
My age 48 height 5'8 weight 176
Wife is 47 5'4 weight 151

First I'll list our exercise. We started walking 45 mins a day but now we walk 2.7 miles and jog .7 miles. So we walk a little then jog a little then walk and jog for a total of 3.4 miles everyday. I will do this twice a day 2 or 3 times a week and my wife will do it twice once a week. But at least once everyday.
We also started playing tennis but only a couple times a month for a hour. Its not really tennis its chasing yellow balls lol.
A month ago we bought a Body Solid home gym. So for we only do upper body workouts 3 times week for 25 minutes.

Pectoral fly 3 sets 15 reps
Lat pull downs 4 sets 15 reps
Bicep curls 3 sets 15 reps
Chest supported mid rows 3 sets 15 reps
Triceps press downs 3 sets 15 reps
Rest period is the time it takes us to change places, we work out together

We do snack on pretzels every afternoon before dinner. I guess we think its OK because they have no fat.
On the weekends we have problems. Every Friday night we go to our favorite Mexican restaurant and have margaritas, chips and guacamole. We also have a fruit smoothie in place of our apple for our 3 PM snack. We do stick to plan for food and exercise the rest of the weekend. Its those darn margaritas that we can't resist!

Our results have been very good. I laid out a plan on paper with ours goals and results including pictures, weight and measurements. We both reached our goals and set new goals. In six months I lost 51 pounds and my wife dropped 31. We both have 10 pounds to go. Thats if we don't set new goals.
We continue to lose weight but its very slow. We hope the weights make a difference its been only a month. We usually hit a new low weight Friday morning then the weight goes up on the weekends and it takes us all week to get down again.

We feel like we have made lots of sacrifices but did not want to give up our Friday nights. But its time to make some changes and would appreciate advice. We need to change things up but we need a plan we can follow.

Thanks for your time.

I dont think the margaritas once a week are too damaging. Once a week I eat whatever I want. Personally I only consume alcohol once a month or so. Healthy weight loss is slow. You dont want to lose more than 2 lbs a week anyway. IMO it is better to lose 1 lb a week then to lose more but not be able to sustain the lifestyle and gain it all back. I think you need more protein in your diets. Protein is good b/c it speeds up your motabilism every time you eat it. We are also made of protein so it is pretty important. I think it is good that you are doing weights 3 times a week for short durations. I would definately work out your legs though. You will burn more calories and prduce more growth hormone. I'm not sure what your home gym is like but squats, deadlifts and power cleans are really the best exercises because they work the most muscle. This means they build the most muscle and burn the most fat. The problem I see as that you are only doing two compound movements the row and the pulldown. Compound movement are those that use more than one muscle group (an isolation movement). Isolation movement arent going to burn many calories or build as much muscle. Movements you should add for the upper body are bench press and military press. Both work out your triceps and the bench also works your chest and the military press works out your shoulders. You are already doing rows and pulldowns which hit your back and biceps. Dips would also be great if you can do these. Youtube is great for checking out how to do these exercises and for other ideas.

I just wanted to add that I just checked out what a body solid is. It looks like you can do a lot with it. There is nothing wrong with working out with machines but I woulnt leave out free weights. You may want to pick up a set of adjustible dumbbells. Our bodies evolved to move free weight so our bodies respond better to them. Adjustible dumbbells are also cheap and take up little space and will give you more variety.

Actually, the body has no idea if you're using a free weight, a machine, a water-filled keg, or etc. All it realizes is there is resistance.

I'm in agreeance for getting some adjustable dumbbells so you can hit the lower body with lunges, squats, and deadlifts.

How would your body not know that it doesnt have to balance a weight? Are you saying that the leg press is the same as a squat? Or a maching shoulder press is the same as balancing a weight over your head? I completely disagree and there is plenty info out there that would also contradict your point. Your body was not designed to move in tracks or leavers. Again There are good things about machines but I think it would be a mistake to leave out free weights. Who do you know that has built a great physique on machines alone. There are plenty of people that have done great things with free weights alone.

There's really no point of debate here. I was commenting on your comment about the body adapting to move free weight and that the body responds better to free weight over machines. The point is that the body does not know that you are bench a bar or you are using a machine chest press. All it knows is that there is a weight that needs to be moved. The mind knows exactly what type of instrument you are lifting but the body has no idea, it only recognizes resistance.

Can you build a nice physique with free weights? Yes. Can you build a nice physique with machines? Yes.

I am just saying I disagree. I see your logic but that is not how it works in the end. Your muscle may not know the difference but your central nervous system does. When you use a machine you do not have to balance the weight so the smaller supporting muscles dont get worked atleast not as good because you are taking some of the stress off. Arent you able to press more weight on a machine shoulder press than you can with free weight? Dont you think there is a reason for this? Your central nervous system is also less likely to tell your body to start producing more growth hormones. I mean this is bodybuilding 101. Can you increase your muscle size with machines? yes. Can you do it more effectively using free weights and machines togeather? yes. I have never seen a Mr. Olympia created on a Bowflex. I am sorry. I also just want to include this poll done on Bodybuilding.com
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/pollresults.php

The poll asks:
Which Are More Effective For Strength Gains?
machines got 357 votes or 14.5%
free weights got 2105 votes or 85.5%

I am sorry the link I posted doesnt seem to be working. Try going here:
Bodybuilding.com - Topic Of The Week - Are Free Weights Or Machines Better For Results?
scroll down you can vote on the poll and see the results. I also just want to say that I am not trying to argue. I just think that this is an educational website that people come to inorder to learn. I think they should see all sides of the issue, thats all. I appreciate you bringing up your point.
