MUscle Development in Women

I am not an expert and nor am I pretending to be an expert, so don't ask me too many technical questions. However, if you look around, you will see that most men have bigger muscles than most women. Women never develop muscles as big as men. I have read that the size and strength and men's muscles is greater than that of women's muscles because of various biological factors including testosterone and fibre composition.

Still, if barbells do not result in huge, ugly muscles, I am willing to give them a try. Right now, I am shooting for some strength but mostly weight-loss and flexibility. Once I have met those goals, I plan to start martial arts classes. And that would be a good time to build big muscles. So I will start working on that around then (in 6 to 9 months).

Thanks for the input!

Dude, your 6/1 and 140 lbs and your trying to lose weight? Learning the techniqel aspects of weight training is one thing that you may not need to learn, but learning when to gain and lose weight is one thing you do need to learn.
Your not going to get big and bulky and have "huge" muscles. That will take you YEARS of intense and techniqel training to even come close to it. You mentioned the beach and girls. It seems to me like that your goal is really to look better. If you want to look better, you have to bulk up about 30 lbs. You may think the term bulking up is lifting hard and gaining a lot of muscle and looking, in your words, too big. You will gain a little fat and a little muscle and wont look so skinny. Thats the first step. Doing dumbell squats isnt going to make you look better. You'll need an all around stable workout with the proper diet to look better, and it will take time. I say, create a consistant workout and lift hard. If you need any help doing that you can look arond on the forums for ideas and ask someone on here for help constructing one specifically for your weight and height. Good luck.

Oh and one more thing that you might want to keep in mind with the martial arts. Many martial arts consist of weight class. You say that you want to build big muscles when you start it, and it might not be a good idea. You will end up adding a lot of weight, and not a lot of strength compared to that weight. You might want to look into building up your strength to weight ratio more than getting larger muscles. Bigger muscles does not necessarily mean stronger muscles. For martial arts, being 150 lbs and benching 275 is a lot better than being 200 lbs and bench 315. Just something to keep in mind.
