"Teachers will carry guns in school." Thoughts?

HOUSTON, Aug. 15, 2008 (Reuters) — A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district's superintendent said on Friday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States.

The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district's superintendent, David Thweatt.

School experts backed Thweatt's claim that Harrold, a system of about 110 students 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth, may be the first to let teachers bring guns to the classroom.

Thweatt said it is a matter of safety.

"We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, 'What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do?" he said. "It's just common sense."

Teachers who wish to bring guns will have to be certified to carry a concealed handgun in Texas and get crisis training and permission from school officials, he said.

Recent school shootings in the United States have prompted some calls for school officials to allow students and teachers to carry legally concealed weapons into classrooms.

The U.S. Congress once barred guns at schools nationwide, but the U.S. Supreme Court struck the law down, although state and local communities could adopt their own laws. Texas bars guns at schools without the school's permission.

It is probably the right thing to do. I just went through Kennesaw, GA last week. In that town, every head of household is required to own a firearm together with ammunition. They are free to carry a firearm where they wish, though that do not have to.

At the same time, Kennesaw is rated one of the 10 best towns for families.

As Mayor Stephenson told a national gun rally in Kennesaw a few years back, "We're the town that proves more guns doesn't have to mean more crime."

Quote: I ask him if Kennesaw's gun law would work in, say, New York City. "I don't know, but gun control don't work in New York City either."

Prior to enactment of the law, Kennesaw had a population of just 5,242 but a crime rate significantly higher (4,332 per 100,000) than the national average (3,899 per 100,000). The latest statistics available – for the year 2005 – show the rate at 2,027 per 100,000. Meanwhile, the population has skyrocketed to 28,189.

By comparison, the population of Morton Grove, the first city in Illinois to adopt a gun ban for anyone other than police officers, has actually dropped slightly and stands at 22,202, according to 2005 statistics. More significantly, perhaps, the city's crime rate increased by 15.7 percent immediately after the gun ban, even though the overall crime rate in Cook County rose only 3 percent. Today, by comparison, the township's crime rate stands at 2,268 per 100,000.

I believe that weapons in the hands of the average person is a good thing. It works for the swiss. An armed society is a polite society.

The problem, of course, is not the legality of owing guns, but the right of the individual to prepare to defend themselves in any way they see fit.

Nope. No way. I'm a teacher and there's no way I'd carry a gun to school.

First of all, call me selfish, but I wouldn't work in a school where this is a necessity. I work with a very specialized population, I work well with them, and that's where I choose to be.

Second of all, if misused or misfired and I hit a kid, I would have to just shoot myself right there. I couldn't live with taking the life of a child.

Third, the likelihood it would be turned on me or on other students is high. That isn't fair to my husband who loves me, nor to my kids. Again, if one of my kids was hurt or killed due to my gun, I'd not be able to live with myself.

It is sad that we have places where this is even a discussion and I wish I knew the answer. God bless the teachers who WILL work there because they are so needed. Sadly they burn out early and fast. Teaching is hard enough without bringing guns into the picture, and I totally respect people who will work in inner city schools. I'd rather not have a job than work in one because I value my life and don't need the chaos. Yup, it's selfish but there you go.

And thats why only certified and trained teachers will handle weapons. Imagine if a teacher had one of these concealed weapons at Virgina tech, or any other school shootings. Imagine how many lives could have been saved.

My point : Criminals will always find a way to get a gun, illegally or legally. So why make it harder for responsible law-abiding citizens to defend themselves and others?

All I can say is thank goodness problems like that havent come over here yet. If teachers need them they should have them but a weapon can always be used against you.

I guess generally that I believe that individual communities have the right to make laws that fit the needs and belief systems of their people. So, "live and let live"...

That being said, my school district is "next door" to a school district in an extremely rural area, school has only a few hundred kids, and the principal of that school was gunned down by a disgruntled student about 2 years ago. I believe, from the occurrence there, that everything happened so fast that no one with a gun would have been able to have changed anything. Most of these school shootings involve a student who walks in and starts mowing peple down--everything is done in a few minutes. I don't know that I feel that even a trained teacher will have the "wherewithall" to be able to counter an attack like that...before it ends on its own.

Furthermore, I guess I'd be most comfortable with teachers in small schools in rural areas having guns than a teacher in the average NYCity school...I think the gangs would find a way to get the weapons far more often than they would be needed for a "school shooting"...and if not used to defend during a "school shooting", when else would they be used? How is that decided???

Lots of unanswered questions here...Pandora's box.

FYI--I do believe in the right to bear arms, my husband is an avid hunter, and we have guns in my home...I am neither far left or right on this issue.

You have very mixed up views sometimes. I thought you liked the Chinese culture and way of living? Not only is gun ownership banned there; you could be executed for owning one and even telling someone you wanted one would result in you being thrown in jail.

What do you want, freedom or control? You seem to support both

Bear attacks happen when you least expect them. In related news, did you hear about how one town was attacked by an ARMY of bears? Just when you thought you had to look out for one bear, it turns out they've organized. **** that, I'm moving to China where their only bears are white and black where all they do is eat bamboo and die.

Or wait, maybe China isn't the best idea...
