My shoulder is still in bad shape... what do you think is wrong?

Hey, my shoulder has been hurting after one of my chest days, it was either on the bench press or pec fly's or both... but it's been causing me trouble for about 3 weeks.

It feels like there is a bone out of place or something... like here is an example.

I raise my arm to the side (hurts even without weight) and then I slowly lower it down, and there is this bone or something that is rubbing against something and causing a lot of pain, then eventually it pops up, hurts a lot, then I can lower my arm all the way.

I do shrugs and I shrug the weight up, when I lower it that same bone pops..

It hurts like crazy to do a full shoulder press or to get the initial rep on a DB bench press... I haven't even tried any BB bench presses since then..

What could this be?

High odds are---that it is a "Rotator cuff" injury. This injury is common among persons who weight train regularly.

You need to rest it, IMO

Its my opinion, one does not work through a "plain and obvious" injury to a muscle, tendon and/or joint.

I had a simuliar injury in my left shoulder sometime back, and took nearly 3 weeks off. My injury healed quickly, especially after studying some exercises one can do to improve the overall strength of the shoulder girdle, and then implementing them.

EDIT: An injured shoulder (especially the rotator cuff) can make one feel much weaker (or feel severely weakened) than what they really are, and can effect nearly all lifts--not to mention functional activities of life.

IMO, if you are still able to move your shoulder, its not completely torn (if it were, you wouldnt be able to, IMO), so it could be a slight tear, or possibly swollen and enlarged causing some pain in movements.

To play it safe, you may need to see DR to make sure its the rotator cuff and not something else.

Best wishes

I agree Chillen, taking time off does help.
I'm doing a push/pull split and took it easy on the push day and my shoulder got better, had less pain. But taking time off didn't fix the problem
because when I started doing some heavy push movements again, my shoulder started to cause me problems again. I've read on several side like T-nation, that doing the right exercises for the rotator cuff might actually help, so I'm gonna give it a shot.
Part of the problem for me is that on my push day I do: bench press, incline bp, close grip bp, dips, military press , which are all heavy lifts and can be quite taxing on the shoulders.

Here is a good link to take a look at. It has some rather good pics of the shoulder, and explains the rotator cuff in depth.

Clicking, and other noises (simuliar to this) are common with a rotator cuff injury......RWS.........

I looked up the article, it says about doing an MRI, luckily my father is a professor of radiology and he does MRI's everyday, so I might tell him to check me up :)

wow I read that article Chillen...... that's scary stuff... I would hate to have to get surgery and not be able to lift for 8 weeks! Seriously that's scary as hell...

I think I will try to get into a doctor as soon as I can though..

So from the article it said that these repairs don't just fix themselves... right? Or is that just severe tears, or complete tears..?

If you have your hand straight above your head, hand facing forward and move your arm down like the hand of a clock does your hand accelerate quickly as it nears your hip?

Doctor? Does no one think to suggest a doctor?

If it hurts that bad, you want to see a doctor. Don't do some exercise that someone says you should do. Don't mess with it. A shoulder injury can be for life. Like knees, there is cartilage in the shoulder. Because cartilage does not have a blood supply, it won't heal itself like a muscle tear would. If you're honestly feeling pain as you describe, you need to see a doctor to rule out serious injury.

Rest is good for a bit with a shoulder injury, but too long and you can actually end up weakening the shoulder, or worse causing a "freeze". The shoulder will lose mobility, and there goes the lifting.

Not sure how old you are, but my husband ignored a shoulder injury he got in his early 20s and it's worse now...damn man! He's not allowed to complain, because he ignored it, or I punch him and I punch hard for a girl.

hmm, no, I can move it down really fast if I would want to in all positions..

But yeah, as it nears the hip it becomes painless, when my arm reaches about a 45 degree angle to my shoulder or torso, or if I move my arm from a 90 degree angle down to a 45 degree angle, that is where it hurts, but from 45 degrees down it doesn't hurt.

anyway, why do you ask? What would that mean?

Make an appointment with a Doctor, young man.

Have a trained eye look at it and obtain a "professional" opinion on the best course of action for you to pursue.

Meanwhile, it is still my opinion, you lay off until you KNOW what the problem is. You do not want the stress of training to make it worse.

chillen has given superb advice.
i personally had a series of back/shoulder complications all stemming from one major injury including a rotator cuff injury. so i stopped lifting. i didnt know it was a rotator cuff injury until i visited a doctor around 5 months later when it still was aching and weak.
he said it would heal in around 4-8 weeks but it didnt.
so i finally went to him again and he got me into physical therapy which lead me back to the PRIVALAGE of lifting.

in all i couldnt lift for a year. so 8 weeks recovery from that surgery sounds like a quick fix for me. its not all that bad :] just dont wait months to see a doctor like me

go to a doctor, and for gods sake avoid anything that hurts!
could be an impingement, but without an xray it is really just an educated guess..

from what I have read it sounds more like a tear to me. I remember when I was doing pec fly's that day on one of the reps I went down too far and it started hurting a lot, that must have been the moment where I tore it.

Is going to see a doctor really easy for all of you or something? At the end of the month I won't be covered by my parents health insurance anymore, and going to see a doctor is going to cost an assload of money.

But for now I will try to get an appointment for when I come home in a week... man this sucks.

I have had pain in my shoulder like this before too, but that just went away on it's own, I even worked through the pain, and it still just went away.

By the way, what kind of a doctor should I see?

so when you're not covered by your parents you will be without insurance for how long? I live in Norway, so insurance is not a problem, we have healthcare.

well hopefully I will get a job with benefits after the summer is over..otherwise I will have to get a plan I guess.
