gaining weight back?!

Ive been Weight lifting for about a month and a half faithfully. is it possible to gain 5-6lbs of mass muscle in this time frame? Ive lost 90lbs but to see i gained about 7lbs is kinda of a scare.

dont forget that there are other reasons for weight fluctuations such as glycogen, fat, and hydration.

It is near impractical that you put on the much lean mass in one month, but im not sure how much a new lifter is able to gain in terms of lean mass before he slows down. I know that there is the estimated "no more than" 0.5lb of lean tissue per week, but since you are new to lifting it may be possible that you may have put on a bit more.

not sure though, anyone else have thoughts or numbers?

6lbs of lbm in 6-7 weeks is pretty good, yes it is probably newbie gains. nothing to worry about.

nosweat: People are different. some people eat enough, workout hard enough and are able to gain more than a 1lb a week of LBM, others cant. There is no set number, just an average.

I'm really struggling with the same thing. I've been weight training since mid-February and since that time have stayed at basically the same weight (gained a little actually). I'm trying to lose weight (and up to starting to work out I had lost 98 lbs) but it has just stopped. I have upped my calories just trying to provide plenty of energy for the work (still only eating 2000 cals/day), but I'm not quite sure how to feel about the whole thing. I'm currently 256 (still have at least 30 lbs to go, maybe up to 45 lbs) and it's tough to change from "morbidly obese and need to lose a ton of weight" to "obese and need to lose a much smaller amount". Mostly it's disheartening and frustrating, but I guess you've just got to keep going and trust that you are doing the right thing.

Ps. I hold out with the hope that the working out will catch up with me and I'll start to seriously drop weight sometime soon.

ah thanks phate didnt know that it was possible for that amount of lbm weekly. I am now more optimistic about my own weight gain approach hehe

Everyone's different, some people's genetics just allow their body's to gain faster
There was a dude on here that gained like 30-40lbs in 10 weeks and he didn't look like he put on much if any fat.

Don't be so concerned with the number on the scale. A much more important measure is your body fat % and how your clothes fit. It is very common to gain weight and lose body fat at the same time. Just make sure you are eating at a calorie deficit and keep an eye on your bf% (i.e. get it professionally checked, dont use scales).

Well done on the weight loss so far!

you way 256lbs and you are only eating 2000cals thats way to low.

lyle macdonald recomends 15cals/lb maintenance and drop by 20% for a cut and 10% for a bulk and adjust as the weight goes down, that would put you at 3800cals to maintane so even if you were eating 3000cals you should still lose weight and have more energy than you have now.

Thanks for the replies JTM and buzz.

JTM, I know you’re right on the “forget the scale” idea, but it’s really hard after watching it every week (pretty much) for two years. I’m certainly still going to weigh in I just need to remember that it will fluctuate and it doesn’t correlate directly with fat loss. I have gotten into smaller clothes (of course) since starting. I generally wear a 2XLT shirt and size 40 pants (started at 3XLT kinda tight and 46 pants). I do have a pair of 38 pants that fit okay, but I’ve been big for so long I can’t stand to have anything semi-tight on my legs. I still think to myself "nobody cares to see that" lol.

buzz, I hear ya on the calories, but once again it is really hard after being so heavy. I certainly don’t eat the most healthy foods now (I’m married with two kids making it hard to get a strict diet plan that will work for the entire family for the rest of our lives) so that may be part of the reason I can’t eat more calories without it packing on. I am still trying to figure out a good calorie amount for myself. I would actually find it difficult to eat 3000 healthy calories per day as it is. I could definitely eat 3000 calories of unhealthy food, but that doesn’t seem like the point that you were making. I think my metabolism was and kind of still is shot after about two years of losing weight by eating a deficit without doing any real exercise. That, I believe, was my biggest mistake in my journey to lose all this weight…the decision to not exercise.

Anyone who is reading this and is just getting started losing weight…
Make sure you exercise. I didn’t for two years and lost a good bit of weight, but now it is certainly harder to up my calories to where they should be because my metabolism is so shot. I’m sure it will recover (continue to recover I guess) but it may be a longer road than I imagined.

more directly make sure you not only exercise, but fit in an intense weight lifting routine to make sure you do not lose a large amount of lbt whilst on the cut. I wish I found this forum a long time ago back when I was 268lbs because I lost so much weight without the knowledge that I have now.

Now I have to work on building back all the muscle tissue that I lost from my 100+ lb weight loss. So dont forget to weight train, and exercise smart.

So does that mean I can start saying I'm on a "cut" now? I guess I've been thinking I was "trying to lose weight" or maybe "de-fatifying" myself. Saying I'm on a cut sounds a lot better. Like I'm some sort of athlete. I am pretty good at golf, but I know golf is arguably not a sport. :argue:

Good points!

this is for 2Bbuff, 2000 cals aday is pretty low, Ive heard that no matter what women arent suppose to drop lower than 1200 and men 1500 no matter what if you add on a workout to that, you might be having trouble losing weight because your body's in starvation mode??? i guess it depends on how much cardio you do but even when im on a serious cut I drop to 25/2600 cals and Im 6ft and 185
