6lbs of lbm in 6-7 weeks is pretty good, yes it is probably newbie gains. nothing to worry about.
nosweat: People are different. some people eat enough, workout hard enough and are able to gain more than a 1lb a week of LBM, others cant. There is no set number, just an average.
I'm really struggling with the same thing. I've been weight training since mid-February and since that time have stayed at basically the same weight (gained a little actually). I'm trying to lose weight (and up to starting to work out I had lost 98 lbs) but it has just stopped. I have upped my calories just trying to provide plenty of energy for the work (still only eating 2000 cals/day), but I'm not quite sure how to feel about the whole thing. I'm currently 256 (still have at least 30 lbs to go, maybe up to 45 lbs) and it's tough to change from "morbidly obese and need to lose a ton of weight" to "obese and need to lose a much smaller amount". Mostly it's disheartening and frustrating, but I guess you've just got to keep going and trust that you are doing the right thing.
Ps. I hold out with the hope that the working out will catch up with me and I'll start to seriously drop weight sometime soon.![]()

Thanks for the replies JTM and buzz.
JTM, I know you’re right on the “forget the scale” idea, but it’s really hard after watching it every week (pretty much) for two years. I’m certainly still going to weigh in I just need to remember that it will fluctuate and it doesn’t correlate directly with fat loss. I have gotten into smaller clothes (of course) since starting. I generally wear a 2XLT shirt and size 40 pants (started at 3XLT kinda tight and 46 pants). I do have a pair of 38 pants that fit okay, but I’ve been big for so long I can’t stand to have anything semi-tight on my legs. I still think to myself "nobody cares to see that" lol.
buzz, I hear ya on the calories, but once again it is really hard after being so heavy. I certainly don’t eat the most healthy foods now (I’m married with two kids making it hard to get a strict diet plan that will work for the entire family for the rest of our lives) so that may be part of the reason I can’t eat more calories without it packing on. I am still trying to figure out a good calorie amount for myself. I would actually find it difficult to eat 3000 healthy calories per day as it is. I could definitely eat 3000 calories of unhealthy food, but that doesn’t seem like the point that you were making. I think my metabolism was and kind of still is shot after about two years of losing weight by eating a deficit without doing any real exercise. That, I believe, was my biggest mistake in my journey to lose all this weight…the decision to not exercise.
Anyone who is reading this and is just getting started losing weight…
Make sure you exercise. I didn’t for two years and lost a good bit of weight, but now it is certainly harder to up my calories to where they should be because my metabolism is so shot. I’m sure it will recover (continue to recover I guess) but it may be a longer road than I imagined.
more directly make sure you not only exercise, but fit in an intense weight lifting routine to make sure you do not lose a large amount of lbt whilst on the cut.
...fit in an intense weight lifting routine...
So dont forget to weight train, and exercise smart.
