Weight Gain Formulas

Hi,
I am a pretty skinny guy and a hard gainer, around 5'10 and weigh 114 pounds.
I was wondering about some things concerning the weight gain formulas...
1.What should i be looking for in one?
2.How should one be taking it?
3.Where am i supposed to buy it?
4.Any recommended formulas?
I appreciate the help.
-thanks

The best place to start is by reading the nutrition sticky. Supplements are just that. They should not be used as a replacement for food or be relied upon. Ya gotta eat real food!

If I was you I would invest in some whey protein and possibly dextrose and creatine. But thats just off the top of my head not knowing your training history or your background.

First, I don't think there is such a thing as a hardgainer. Have you been lifting heavy and eating a lot for a long period of time with no gains? By eating a lot I really do mean a lot, like 3,000 calories a day, maybe more depending on your activity level.

True, some people will respond more quickly than others, but I think that if you lift properly and eat properly, you'll build muscle.

That being said, using a weightgain shake will make it easier to pack in more calories each day. I've used the GNC 1850 weight gainer (1,850 calories per serving), but I wasn't too happy with it. I did pack on some muscle, but whenever I drank it, my stomach hurt and I couldn't down an entire serving, it was just too much. Since then I've stayed away from weight gainers and just stick to whey protein shakes as far as supplements go.

If you really want to try a weightgainer, go for it, I just think that you can do it without a weightgainer.

well you still gained alot of muscle. sugar laden as well ill bet. Cheers for that I read about that weight gainer a little while ago and wondered about its claims.

The thing is that i have a hard time eating alot(even started shoving food down my throat) . Do ya know how a guy can start eating alot, and what specific foods are needed in a balanced diet?

Exactly, that's where all the calories come from.

To the OP: Count your calories and eat real food (counting isn't just for people who want to lose weight, you should count them to make sure you're eating enough)

I speak from experience. I was skinny as a kid and teenager. I had a really high metabolism....I'm 33 years old now and I still eat around 4000 calories to maintain between 185-190 (at 6'1).

In my adult life I got to where I ate so much to bulk that I overcame my metabolism and gained too much weight, then I finally came here, learned about proper diet and did it the right way.

The moral is: find out what caloric intake works for you and count it out every day

At first, I had a real hard time eating too. I ate till I was full at every meal, but it still wasn't enough. My solution, I ate more anyway, even though I was full. Sometimes I came close to throwing up. Eventually, your stomach will expand and you'll be able to eat more at each meal with no problem. However, the problem then becomes eating less once you've gained enough weight. When I started law school and had no time for the gym, my appetite was out of control.

Go to the nutrition forum and read the nutrition 101 sticky, that will give you a good idea as to how much you should be eating.

Also, a good thing to supplement your diet with is whey protein shakes. I make them with 1 cup of milk, 1 scoop of whey protein powder, and 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter. That adds up to about 30 grams of protein and 500 calories.

Oh yeah, and don't forget to lift heavy weights.

GNC, health food stores, over the internet, its all over the place. If you or your family has a membership to sam's club or one of those other bulk warehouse stores, you can probably get a good deal on whey. I got a 5 lb. bag of EAS brand whey protein for $30, that will last me for months. You'll notice that there are big name brand proteins like muscle milk and myoplex, which cost more but in my mind don't offer anything more. Even Target and Wal-mart have whey protein in their vitamin isles.

I would personally avoid weight gainer shakes. I would recommend complementing your diet with calorie dense foods such as peanut butter, almonds etc. You can make your own high calorie yet nutricious shakes with things like cottage cheese, peanut butter, blueberries, whey protein, milk, bananas and even a bit of icecream. Plenty of calories there.

Yeah I've got a suggestion.
Make your own weight gaining shake.
In a blender, add 500 ml of milk, 1 banana, 100 grams of oats, 1-2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter. That's more than 1000 calories there.
