muscles showing AFTER rest days?

So I'm following a workout schedule of 5 days on / 2 days off. and i was noticing during the week while I'm working out my muscles feel less hard, and even undefined at times. but today (after my rest days) i noticed that today my muscles, particularly my arms, were looking and feeling allot bigger and harder.

Edit: during the week my arms didn't really fill out my t-shirt sleeves while flexing, but today they filled them out quite nicely.

Is this normal to see this much a difference after rest days?

During the actual process of working out you are tensing your muscles and they will look bigger and feel harder but assuming that you are working them enough you are damaging the tissue (which is necessary to improve the muscle) so whilst the body is repairing the damaged muscles to a newer, better level you will feel like you may have declined.

Once the process has actual been completed of rebuilding the muscle, they will be bigger and stronger than before. Hence after your 2 days rest your body is back to fixed and because of the work you have done your muscles have grown (hopefully).

I could go into the technicalities of energy use and the hormone changes etc but this is basically what happens. I hope this helps.

Yeah it helped allot, thanks. I didn't really understand the importance of the resting period before, I just did it because that's what I was told to do. I now understand why it is important though. Thanks again!:)

you won't see growth from just 1-2 rest days. the reason could be that you totally annihilate your arms when you workout, to the point where you're almost unable to flex them. Usually your muscles should be bigger while working out due to the pump (increased blood flow into the muscle) but it is nothing to worry about.

What he's trying to say is ... don't do so many curls ;)
