Stomach Fat

I had a question and wa wondering if someone would be able to back it...i was on this site and the site stated that ust because you work out your abs doesn't mean that that where the fat is going to be taken away from...
is this true...
with all the ab machines it's kinda hard to tell.

Thanks:cool:

Stickies!

You cannot spot reduce, and strengthening your muscles does not mean you are burning fat.

True - lean muscle burns more calories than fat does. More lean muscle mass on your body, increases your basal metabolic rate, therefore you will burn more calories throughout the day doing everyday activities.

False - doing crunches will get you a 6 pack. Reducing your body fat is soley dependant on your intake and expenditure. If you burn more calories then you take in, you will lose weight. Doing this properly to burn more fat then lean muscle is difficult, and requires a lot of research and understanding of physiology.

Don't skimp on the ab exersices because of this, strengthening your core is the most important thing you can do. your core stabalises your body so that you can do all of the other exercises. Having a weak mid section is the reason a lot of people run into back problems.
Keep asking questions, that's why you came here.

excuse you?

Doing crunches, sit ups, and many other core exercises *will* get you a 6 pack, BUT you have to loose the fat to see it. You can't get a 6 pack without the exercises, just like you can't see it with the fat.....

actually you are kind of wrong as well. Doing crunches or whatever other exercise for abdominals will only get you so far. Train your abs like any other muscle. Hit them hard, feed them, and give them rest. Although with a steady diet and hard compound training, you really dont need to work your abs that much, if any at all.

I never said it was the only way, but just like all muscles, you have to work them if you expect to build them and strengthen them. :)

It's true abdominal exercises do not burn fat.

If you want great abs focus more on your nutrition, cardio, and strength training.

You. Cannot. Spot. Reduce. Fat. Ever.

To create abs like Gerard Butler in 300 you'll need to drop your bodyfat percentage to single digits and work your core muscles until you're ready to pass out...and then work them some more.

Of course abdominal resistance training strengthens your core, and when they're visible, makes your abs look better. You can get a 6 pack just by lowering bf%. Of course you should still train them, but you can get the flat stomach with visible lines just by being skinny.

Do 300 crunches morning noon and night, you'll be strong as hell, but if you have a lot of fat on you, you still will not see the 6 pack.

Hey there,
If you don't mind I'd like to explain some thing to do if you would like to get a six pack. Of course doing crunches, sit ups, etc will define and strengthen the muscles, but that doesn't matter if your engorged stomach cells are still there. To lose those you need to continuously drink water doctors advise 8 cups a day!(2L) This seems like a lot, but when you constantly have water in your body the engorged cells go through a stimulation of the body and start thinning the fattened cells making the abdomen region more toned, thus leading to those abs you wanted!

Thanks!:eek2:

P.S. Love the smilies :p

I'd like take a moment to mention that based upon your genetics, it may not be (safely) possible to get a defined six pack. If you are sitting at a healthy body fat percentage (10-15%), and know you have a strong core and you're committing yourself to a good diet, resistance, and cardio routine, and still only see a little ab definition (and not the 6-pack you originally desired), then that's kind of where you're going to be for life.

It's hardly a bad thing either, because you'll still be fit, healthy, strong and generally cut, and those are all more important that being able to count each abdominal cell through your skin.

I don't know how I didn't mention genetics. Good call. :beerchug:

What are some good exercises to do besides sit ups for strengthen the abs? Thanks so much!:)

Pilates. Pick up a pilates book and you will have sojme awesome tools to strengthen your abs. Step by steps on how to do them, and you'll have a huge variety so you're almost garenteed to find a few that you like.

Since I took a pilates class at the gym I swear by it.
