diets

As for the red-meat thing....there are studies that suggest we should never put it in our mouths, and others that suggest moderate consumption has benefits: like most things, it's a matter of which studies, research and info you want to subscribe to. The range of thought is both vast and often in contradiction. I've got a couple resources (books) that get pretty elaborate about how evil the sat-fat & red meat are, I'll see what I can find that seems reasonably rational and worth looking into...and we can pick it apart later. With any luck we can all be eating Double Western Bacon Cheeseburgers and feeling great about our diets!

For what it's worth....the American Heart Association opts for ' moderate ' consumption of lean meats IMO

I think the AHA recommendations allow for up to 6 oz ( i.e 2 servings ) of lean meat per day.....and allows for saturated fat intake not to exceed 7 % of total your daily calories each day.

In short, the oils that come from plants tend to be very good for you (palm, coconut, avocado)...and the saturated oils that come from animals tend to be bad for you....or so the overwhelming gross majority of clinical research and studies report to us.

Coconut and palm oil tend to have a high proportion of saturated fat, and are therefore disrecommended by the usual sources concerned about heart health. Other natural vegetable oils are generally considered good, provided that you don't go over your calorie needs. If you are concerned about your omega-3 to omega-6 ratio, you may want to favor vegetable oils that are mostly mono-unsaturated over those which are omega-6 poly-unsaturated (flax seeds and walnuts tend to have relatively high omega-3 content, but most poly-unsaturated vegetable oils are pretty much all omega-6).

Hydrogenated vegetable oils and their trans-fats are now on everyone's avoid list.

Sugar
High-Fructose Corn Syrup
Trans-fats, hydrogenated fats, bad oils
Refined carbs (which act like sugar)
Stuff with additives, preservatives, flavorings
4-legged meats (beef, pork, etc)
Anything fried
Beer that comes from a tube & funnel or is intravenously fed to you :D

Amended/clarified list:

White Sugar
High-Fructose Corn Syrup
Trans-fats, hydrogenated fats, bad oils <-- not related to sugar-spike
Refined carbs (which act like sugar)
Stuff with additives, preservatives, flavorings
4-legged meats (beef, pork, etc) <-- lean cuts, in moderation okay
Anything fried
Beer that comes from a tube & funnel or is intravenously fed to you :D Okay if it's a small funnel

Okay, I found the info on why not to eat non-organic meats. It's a lot of typical hype to drive us towards paying the higher-priced stuff at WholeFoods Mart....but in general it goes something like this:

Today's cattle are mostly fed cheap corn. While this helps develop well-marbled flesh and a taste American's have grown used to.....the meat is demonstrably less healthy to eat since it contains more saturated fat- upto 40 percent. Compare this to the 2 or 3 percent fat found in venison, caribou or bison. (So they push grass-feeding). The contention is that today's farmers are jacking the animals up with chemicals, antibiotics, steroids and other things that get into the meat and we end-up consuming it. That is the push towards organic meat.

On the flip side, there's LOTS of evidence that eating fats is quite healthy:

The more healthy fats you eat, the healthier you become. The inhabitants of the greek isle of Crete had fat intake of almost 50% of their total calories showed the least rates of heart disease. They consumed loads of extra-virgin olive oil. The Inuits ate lots of fats- mainly Omega-3 and saturated fats from fish, seals, reindeer (caribou) and whales, including their fatty blubber....they have enjoyed a very low rate of heart disease as well.

Bad fats: trans fat, hydrogenated fats and oils that have been heated (usually polyunsatured oils used for frying foods).

And yes...of course; fats don't make you fat, eating too many calories does.

until you have high cholesterol. I eat red meat maybe once a week.

I'm really craving a big juicy porterhouse on the grill right now. Or a greasy bar burger with cheese, bacon, and piled with onions.

This turkey burger crap just isn't cutting it.

I'm trying to up my fish intake but I can't fish right now the damn lakes still have a coating of unsafe honeycombed ice. LOL

I need more mercury and PCB's in my system.

What's so bad about saturated fats? I love eating steak, I have about a pound of red meat each day I'd say. I try to cut off the easy to spot fat, but I am not too careful about it.

While on keto I was eating tons of saturated fats...

but I read that carbs when combined with saturated fats is when the bad things start to happen.

What are they anyway? The bad things?

You start acting like Chillen, and always attempt to master yourself biologically, emotionally, and within your enviroment, and this tends to "saturate yourself" with the goals one seeks and clogs the arteries with undying motivation and spirit.

HE, he

ROCK ON!

Why anyone would go on a keto diet beats me, and what your read about carbs and sat fats combined is bad is nothing more than attempting to falsely justify the keto diet.

What wrong with saturated fats? if you dont mind dying earlier than you should, whether by stroke, heart attack, cancer etc than eating to much sat fats and meat everyday shouldnt worry you.

A serving of red meat is 3 oz. - so, you have over 5 servings of red meat a day ?

Why so much ?

Is this in addition to, or in place of , chicken and fish consumption ?

How many calories a day would you consume while on the keto diet ?

How many grams of carbs and saturated fat did you consume a day while on keto ?

.

Yeah, I have about 5 servings of red meat per day, sometimes more. Red meat is known to be great for muscle building. All the old school bodybuilders used red meat as their staple muscle building food and many still use it today.

It's mainly in place of chicken and fish while bulking although I usually have some of both chicken and fish, or either one per day.

The fat that is in red meat is about 50% of my fat calories for the day, the rest comes from flax seed, fish oil, peanut butter, and cottage cheese (typically)

On keto I consumed anywhere from 1500-5500. I did a cut, then also a bulk with it for a while.

How many grams of carbs did I eat per day? Approximately 40 g of carbs on average net of fiber. I slowly added more carbs as I went on. When I was bulking the trace carbs added up to 70-80 sometimes.

Here is a 2 week section from when I was on keto while bulking:

Total: 4008
Fat: 281 2531 63%
Sat: 84 758 19%
Poly: 38 346 9%
Mono: 52 472 12%
Carbs: 96 255 6%
Fiber: 32 0 0%
Protein: 304 1217 30%
Alcohol: 0 0 0%

So, 84 grams of saturated fat would be a good estimate.

this is my food journal if your interested...

So anyway, why do you ask?
