Help with my weight gain

When I started a true workout routine for the first time in my life (Bill Stars 5x5) I have gained lots of weight. I have also got a lot stronger. My question is this normal? I have been doing this for 6 months. I strated at 215 now up to 250 at 6'0 tall. I'm very happy with the strenth gains I've made but concerned about all the weight gain. Thanks and I enjoy all the information.

Muscle weighs a lot. What you want to try to figure out is whether you also gained fat (generally undesirable).

Did your waistline (measured at your navel) get bigger or smaller? Do you still put on a belt at the same notch, or a different one? Can you pinch more or less than before?

I have gain around my waistline a few inches ( belt moved up a notch) everything seems to be bigger; belly, legs , back some good some bad (belly). I know that the 5x5x plans are mass builders but is this what most people get out of this.

that seems like too much mass to put on in that short amount of time. My bet is most of it would be fat. It is said that the average person cannot sustain more than .5lb of muscle growth per week, and that is if diet is strong and clean, and your workout if more than half decent. So in 6 months I would say the average person could expect to gain around 10-12lbs of muscle. You have gained 35lbs. Now lets say that you have gained around 8-10lbs of muscle, since I am estimating that your diet and workout are not at 100%, that means you have gained 25 additional pounds, comprised of mostly fat, and glycogen storage.

Although you have experienced gains in your lifts, I personally (from what I have learned from this forum) would reduce your calorie intake tremendously. Are you tracking your calories? What is your BMR?

If so, and you dont feel you want to reduce, then I would suggest doing some cardio (HIIT) to reduce fat gains on your bulk. If you keep at what your doing, you will build muscle, but you will also have to cut a lot of fat.

Do you have access to any body fat monitor?

The whole 'you can only gain x amount of muscle a week' thing is far more of a rough estimate than indisputable fact

Let's forget about weight for a second, and let me ask you, Are you pleased with what you see in the mirror? If so, don't stress out so much about weight gain. If you want an honest to god truth, yes, 250 pounds is quite a lot for a 6 ft tall person. As a matter of fact, I think it's considered obese on a BMI scale - which I'm not saying you are, by the way. However, all that means jack because it doesn't include the fact that your body might be composed of more muscles - you might have a natural body type that builds more muscles (i.e. the "athletic" body type) that some people might kill for. I think you should upload a picture. I think it's unfair to tell you that you gained fat, etc without knowing anything about your current body shape, what it was before you started, etc.

Before I started I was basicly the shame shape I am now just thicker. Before I started this program I could have lost 20 pounds but I went forward with the 5x5 anyway. I will try to get a grip on my BF % today. I work out at 100% effort and never miss a day. My lift on the BIG three have went way up. At 215 1RM Deadlift 225 squat 250 bench 225 now at 250 deadloft 385 squat 365 bench 275 this is great but I seem to be getting fater.

thanks agin

How much does it bother you?

If you want to be lean then cut back on your calories but if you can put up with it - keep making gains and cut for summer

Thanks for all of you replies. My problem is I didn't count calories in this 6 month period. I just ate a lot, all the time, after reading this fourm I now relize how important counting calories are. I'm finding out how important my diet is.

Thanks agin
