Who Here Has Built Abs Through Doing Crunches?

Yes, the old abs again. Im doing 50 ab crunches a day for two reasons. 1. to build abs 2. out of interest to see the affects. But has anyone else built abs through doing crunches, how long did it take you to notice any results?

1) No way to get abs with crunches. You can do a million crunches, and it would have no effect on showing your abs.
2) It's your diet that's going to determine this.
3) If you can do more than 50 crunches without feeling tired, it means it's time to try something else besides crunches.
4) Best exercise for abs is squats and deadlifts.

Ask Chillen, expert abs guy.

No. crunches are a great weapon in your war-chest, as are russian twists, leg raises, and other ab moves. But you'll never see your abs w/o low body fat, which is a direct result of a clean diet.

I did 1000 crunches a day for two years and now I can crush cars with my obliques.

Just kidding, I agree with what both posters said above. They are a useful movement to have but not as useful as big compounds.

Steddie I must admit your are quite Steady in your questions! ROCK ON!

Work IT!.....................>:)

The ultimate AB MACHINE:

Revving up the Quiet Riot; the Deficit Diet.

One needs to understand the function of the torso. Its primary function is one of support (in simple terms), and some twisting functions. In addition, one needs to understand that this muscle, though like the other muscles, are in fact different in many aspects as well:

1. They may grow a little, but they will not grow like the other muscles and have limitations, 2. Its a high endurance muscle (and can take a reasonable beating and adapt fairly quickly), and respond to higher repetitions--normally. (under 30).

With this in mind, I dont single out one exercise over another. Rather a FBW inconjunction with a deficit diet as the core composite in stengthening, developing, and revealing the torso region.

Above ALL other direct torso work, the KINGS of indirect torso development in my opinion are the deadlift and squat, followed by some direct torso work.

And, lastly one has to have the genetic composite to make it happen. We all have abs, but they are not all structured....quite---the same. Though I liked the crunches, they seemed to provide more of a function of control with me, and for this had their place in my routine. My torso front abs are genetically large, and seemed to respond better with weighted movements at a 20 rep range on most exercises.

Going into my program to get lean would be rather extensive, but to answer the question on how long it took: Just over a year with carefully calculated calorie limitations adjusted to what I did each day.

A FULL BODY---split---routine....the entire time, along with performing (at differing times): weighted crunches, weighted half-ups, russian twists, leg raises, hanging leg raises, DB side bends for direct torso work. And cardio as well. I also manipulated calories in many different ways over this period.

To remove the last lower ab portion of fat, I had to nearly triple cardio at one point (I did over 50 cardio sessions in May 07, for example at rather high intensity levels, and perfomed two-adays and even three-aday at 25 to 35 minutes), and used a form of a ketogenic diet (low carb). This was by far was the toughest and most difficult portion----but it came off....I was more stubborn.

Getting the abs to show is all about the diet......hands down no equal---all that cardio work would have been for nothing without the diet right........plain and simple. (sure my cardiovascular would have improved, but the fat wouldnt of come off)

This is the short answer.......I prevented myself from being too windy...

Im bulking now though...........to add some size..........

My torso has improved in just a few days, I can feels my torso without having to tense it anymore and it feel much stronger when I do cruches. For example I can hold my cruches in places as opposed to falling back down.

I'm not sure if this an answer to your question, but you can improve strength with crunches, but you will not get 'ripped'.

Crunches will provide some strength and functional control, BUT......no matter the direct or indirect work the torso performs, to see the results of any work....the deficit diet is the ULTIMATE........MACHINE......BABY!

Have a GREAT DAY!

How does the diet build abs?

You don't ' build ' abs via diet per se.

You can strengthen ( ' build ' ) your ab / core muscles directly or indirectly via a variety of exercises.

But to ' see ' your abs, you have to lower your body fat. And to lose body fat you have to create a calorie deficit. A proper diet is one the main ways to achieve a calorie deficit. Cardio and weight training are other ways that can contribute to creating a calorie deficit as well.

When you see or hear people say: Abs are made in the Kitchen or abs are made thorugh they diet, they basically mean thats is a "function of low body fat" which is brought through a deficit diet and exercise.

In order for someone to see the fruits of their labor in exercise (and direct torso work), the body fat has to be low enough to make the abs visible because the torso muscles are very close (and have a protective function) to the lower bodily organs.

Now, if your body fat is already low, it could be a function of proper exercise to build strength in the torso region along with proper diet and nutrition, and could be a different sort of diet and exercise program dependent upon the starting point of the person.

Best regards to you!

How does the diet build abs?

You shed body fat which covers your abs by dieting or eating right. Abs like any muscle are already there they just need uncovered. I have noticed in the past that when I did heavy assisted crunches my abs were more noticable because of the muscle growth

I really take note, Ive lost about 3lbs in 4 weeks but im worried that im going to be skinny with no abs!

Sounds like your are off to a good start. There are definitly abs under there if there weren't you would not be able to stand straight up. Keep doing exercises and try to add some resistance.

if you think you're going to be skinny its probably worth adding some muscle on before shifting fat.

i wasted too much time trying to cut down to muscle that wasnt there. the sort of hollywood abs that most people aspire need to be built up first, and when you cut you will lose some muscle tissue in the process.

yeah but its really the weight I want to lose. If the muscle takes 5 times as long to build I dont mind as long as I lose the weight!

that doesnt necessarily mean that his muscularity will be high enough to show his abs though..

how much are you wanting to lose?
