First time here and already lovin it!

This is my first time here and I already like it! I am seeking help and tips on losing weight and then gaining muscle but first I'll say a liyyle about myself.

I am seventeen years old and I go to a very demanding High School with no "official" sports but we have clubs and such. My school is more focused on academics than athletics. That being said, a little about my youth. Diagnosed ADD around 7, changed to ADHD around 9, and around 6th or 7th grade. I was always very skinny and in 8th grade I swapped medication and was about 88 lbs. One of the meds has a side effect of "weight gain" and I believe it is true. I was around 4'8" and now a senior in High School I am 6ft and 215. :( Last summer I dropped one of the two meds eith doctor approval and went from 210 to 198 not changing anything (well swimming 500meters every other day). It looks like I have a small "beer-belly". School started, so my mom made me resume all meds. 8th grade I played 3 sports, lacrosse, cross country, and swim team. In High School I don't. I live 1 Block from a 3 mile track, half way around is a 400m track, and I am a swim instructor for the YMCA. I believe I dont have bipolar, just ODD and think I would be a perfect lawer. The YMCA I work at is 3? years old with all the best equipment and FitLinxx. Used to use weight machines but slowly stopped due to little improvement. I ran a 5:50 fastest mile in 8th grade, but dont run much now due to sore knees. If I get to sub-200 I could run. Would use free weights but no idea of how to make workout plan. I love food and its hard for me to count calories at school sometimes. Any suggestions on how I could lose weight / gain muscle would be greatly appreciated. Parents will but and groceries i need. Need help setting up a very filling health diet. I will check on here very often so please HELP!!!

Welcome to the forum.

Here are some basic suggestions for you.......

1. First, you need to nail down what your daily " maintenance calories " are first - i.e how many calories it takes each day just to keep you at your current weight. Then, you can use this info to try and figure out an approach to lose some fat.

Here's how......this excellent article by Tom Venuto does a great job of discussing ' Calorie Calculators & Calorie Calculations ' ( including explaining & calculating your things like your BMR, " maintenance calories ", etc. etc. ) and how you can use this info to help you lose fat. The second ( ' Delware link ) actually does a BMR / maintenance calorie calculation for you.......

Calorie Calculations and Calorie Calculators: How Many Calories a Day Should You Eat?

2. Get a handle on what a sensible approach to eating might be.

John Berardi's article below sums up an overall sound to approach to nutrition you also should follow if you want to lose weight intelligently........

John Berardi - 7 Habits

3. Learn " the basics " about basic weight training, cardio, nutrition, etc. etc.

Further info ' links ' on a wide variety of topics for beginners - i.e fat loss, basic nutrition, basic weight training, etc. etc. - can be found on this thread....

Take a bit of time to check these links out and come back with any questions you may have .:)
