Messin with my cycle

This may have been addressed before, but I'm too lazy to search. I started a new weight program in the past month and have decreased my endurance based cardio I had for the triathlon season by more than half. the only cardio I do is some HIIT for 20 minutes and every once in a while a spin class. My entire month has been thrown off because of the addition. Not even 2 hours of intense cardio and triathlon training/races ever shook me off a 28 day cycle but this month I'm ovulating during the time I should be starting (if thats TMI, I'm sorry). That means I'm going to be nearly 2 weeks "late".

Have similar things happpened to anyone else when they started a new weight routine?

I have also been noticing some changes in mine since I started getting serious about the lifting. I used to be on a pretty regular 26-28 day cycle. Then one month out of nowhere it came 10 days early, lasted 3 days, stopped, and then came again when it was supposed to. This month it came on day 22. My body is confused. It's probably my hormones going crazy.

I'm not an endocrinologist, so I don't know exactly what could be going on hormonally. Usually hormones get out of whack when you are undergoing excessive stress. Stress can be emotional/psychological or physical. A very intense workout or low body fat will trigger your reproductive hormones to shut down. If the body senses that you are not fit to care for a baby, the cycle will shut down. It's your body's defense mechanism to prevent pregnancy during stressful times. An irregular period is the first sign that things could be going wrong. There seems to be little evidence to suggest that temporary amenorrhea, or a total lack of menstruation, will permanently damage your reproductive system. Although an unpredictable cycle can be very annoying. I would suggest toning down the workout for a month to see if things go back to normal. If you can't afford to do that and see the workout as more important, then continue with your current routine, just don't be surprised if you continue to be irregular. Another explanation, since you just started a new routine, could be that your body is just adjusting to new stimulus. Things could settle out after a couple of months. Just wait it out and see what happens.

Also, don't feel embarrassed about this. Hormones are a huge part of physical fitness for women. How our body responds hormonally can have a huge impact on the workout. I know I sure as heck don't feel like lifting lots of heavy weights when I'm bogged down by my period. In one part of the month you go from high estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels to low everything. It has a physical impact on your body and how you respond to the workout. It adds an extra complication. It should be discussed though, so don't feel like you have given too much information.

I hope this was helpful.

Perhaps I am not the norm, but I have found that improving my fitness and lifting more has actually made my cycle more regular and less annoying! But I have definitely heard other women who have made significant changes in their exercise routine having their menstrual cycle affected by it. I would give it a month or two and see if things sort themselves out before worrying about it.

Well, I'm not so much worried as I was surprised. Up till now I have thought I've had some pretty extreme workout conditions training for long distance races and it never shifted even a day. then I start some measly weight lifting routine 2 days a week and DECREASE the insanity and it goes all funky. I just thought it was funny, thats all. thanks for your posts guys

NROL's Fat Loss routines are designed to increase stress/cortisol levels on the body, so spicypumpkin may be on to something.

Hey Sparrow! :)
I think thats completely normal...I had similar experiences during our move when I was not working out at all for like a month except some morning runs if I had time...I think just as exercise increases the predictability of your cycles and in my case lessens te strength, i think the reverse is true as well...just like when you start working out for the first time you throw a wrench into the ccle, when you decrease by so much I your body tens to compensate trying to outthink youre new routine and predict when it will get back to normal...fight or flight response...for example, its very rare a person will actually go into labor during a periods of stress (instinct to not bring child into harsh environment) i think the ovulation is based on the same principle. (slow down in exercise must be leading up to something big.. dunno though just wanna let yo know its happened to me too so not to be alarmed! :)
