Lift, Train, Fitness

That is interesting. I can really imagine the external rewards fading quickly whereas the internal motivation keeps us on track because we really understand the whys of what we are doing...
i find the best things so far on my lifestyle change are the ones that i can feel the immediate benefit along with knowing it also has long-term benefits. Like walking is just an immediate reward for me because i love it so much but I also know it's a good long-term choice to make.
Not sure where all this fits in to what you're saying but just some thoughts on motivation...

your walking gives you enjoyment so you have intrinsic motivation to walk, but if someone gave you something for walking (extrinsic) for a while, then that reward was then removed the research indicates you would no longer enjoy the walking as much as when you were just doing it for the fun and fitness.

That makes sense to me. As an amateur photographer, I loved to just go out and take pictures, but the fun disappeared not long after I started getting paid for it.

What about validation? Is that an external reward? Like if you lost weight and someone compliments you on it? I guess it would be if your initial motivation was to lose weight for compliments?

I guess where I feel confused is that there are external rewards for losing weight/getting fit - like buying smaller clothes, getting complimented, seeing the scale go down, etc.

Isn´t that basically where people often struggle when they go to maintenance? The external validation stops so the internal validation for doing the healthy things that caused weightloss (nice walks, food that makes you feel good) have to keep you going and it feels less "worth it".

Good point! I guess one would need to look inward at the point of maintenance and really think about their intrinsic motivations.

It has been a busy day in the garden, hot heavy work but well needed for the benefit of a complete study break today before I push into heavy exam prep for anatomy in two weeks time, I will be heading into to my friends gym to use the skeletal model for some hands on study as we have no access to the uni models due to Covid, such is the drawbacks of online study.

More about the gardening stuff in the garden club.

Many years ago, I was a student teacher for anatomy and physiology. I always preferred physiology because I love science and biochemistry. Anatomy is a very tough course with tons of memorization. You'd think a bone is a bone, but nope, there are a dozen different names for every little part of it! Good luck on the studying.

I´m fine with the muscles, tendons, and bones, but neuro-anatomy always felt so... random.
yep, that is definitely a sticking point and my memory is no longer what it was when I was younger, having done anatomy to a lesser degree before helps, but this is certainly pushing my memory and study ability.

hmmm, I have a little more time to fill in before getting to the gym to access the models, there has been a major accident not far from my driveway blocking the road for who knows how long (multiple ambos, and police)

edit: rescue helicopter just come in low over the house, so it is a bad one.

The road near your driveway sounds like an accident hotspot, Tru. It doesn't sound good with a rescue helicopter :(

Son just took our bin down to the bottom of driveway, traffic is backed up a long way, all I know so far is a 4X4 ended up in a tree. we cannot go anywhere till the accident and traffic clears. At least his boss is understanding that the accident is between us and work.

There is at least one death a year on our road., there are a lot of roadside crosses. we get a lot of tourists who cannot drive on country roads, combined with local idiots and road trains

All clear now, there were no marks on the road, anywhere near where they hit the tree.

Food:

Another good day yesterday, leftover cold roast pork tasted good dipped into hummus as an afternoon snack. When I am finished here I will have a mid-morning breakfast consisting of beef stew that has been cooking overnight in the crock pot.

Allergy:

My inflamed skin is starting to look normal now that I have been only eating fresh food for weeks now, nothing out of tins or packets apart from some yoghurt (carefully selected to avoid allergens)

Exercise

I have pulled up well from the heavy garden work on the weekend, after breakfast and study I will spent some time in the home gym, I have all the bits I need now to assemble a landmine.

not much to report, I need to get a longer screw to complete the landmine.

I mentioned a few posts ago that we get fatalities every year on our road, I heard sirens yesterday afternoon, it was in the news that it was another car hitting trees, this time the passenger was not lucky.

heading outside with little miss now to transplant a couple of of yer potted flowers into a garden bed.

Can they do anything much to fix that stretch of road, Tru? It sounds horrendous.
