Dumbells

I know i'm probably going to sound like a complete fool, but here's the question.

I'm a runner, cross country, track, marathons, you name it. And so my legs are about as fit as possible. But from the waist up, i look like ****. I know becuase i run so much and burn so many calories it'll be impossible to get huge, i'm not looking for that, i really dont care about look. I'm just looking to do what i can to get my full body in shape.

I'm not planning on going to a gym, or put a TON of work into this, i plan on lifting everyother day, so i don't hurt myself, and since i'll only be lifting for upper body. But i was wondering if its possible to do a full upperbody workout using nothing but Dumbells. If so what curls, lifts, and other things should i be doing? Thanks for any help you can give me.

if your cross country your legs are most likely not fit so i would consider a fullbody workout im sure other people will chime in and help though

Lower body weight training will improve muscle balance, performance, and reduce injury risk. Full body workouts, definitely

If your not wanting to invest alot of time in it then the exercise is futile really. Probably best to concentrate on your cross country.

What would you consider a lot of time? Why would the OP be wasting his time by going to the gym?

I never said that he shouldnt go to the gym but do you not agree that with heavy endurance training it is very difficult to get chronic adaptation to resistance training without investing a large ammount of time into it?

If you ask me doing alot of endurance training with a small ammount of resistance training isnt going to make a whole lot of difference especially in this posters case who is interested in aesthetic adaptation.

IMO It would be a different case if the goal was to improve running or something.

When someone is doing a lot of exercise already in one area, the last thing that you want to do is give them a lot of exercise in another area, too. The OP said that he's not looking to become a bodybuilder, just add a little bit of muscle definition. Obviously, anything that he does will be severely compromised by his running, but if he doesn't have particularly lofty goals, then I don't see it as a problem. If he's new to training then he shouldn't go too heavy just yet, but eventually a 3x5 program would help to not only get some muscle weight, but to be protective for his joints and improve his running (he didn't say that he was looking for that, but I'm going to assume that he wouldn't mind improved performance and injury prevention as a "side effect" of his training, either). Runners are notorious for being imbalanced and from suffering from overuse injuries: regular weight training can help both of those.

Now, he'll have to eat like a house in order to support his runs and his muscle growth, and no matter how he eats his muscle development almost certainly will be affected by his endurance training, but he already knows that and he's ok with it. A strong growth stimulus with low volume to avoid overreaching will be exactly what he needs, and not futility.

Alright, so, i've got two opinions, is it worth working out? Or would it just be a waste of time since i'm not looking to hit the gym everyday, couple times a week, for hours, i really just want to know if its at all possible to get a decent upper body workout out using dumbells, becuase thats really all i have time/space to use. So is it possible?

I never said you shouldnt go to the gym, but with anything you only get out what you put in.
