Flyer's diary

the mixed media messaging is certainly different this time
Very true, our media has never been perfect, for many years I believe the media had at least of a bit of a liberal bias, but generally tried to tell both sides of the story. That is all over now, I have tried to find an outlet that I thought did a better job of balancing things, but its hard. I agree calling any of our mainstream news outlets fake is not at all helpful. Maybe after the dust settles on this impeachment thing it will get better, but I am skeptical.
have to say, 50 years ago if i was asked if i'd be watching my 3rd impeachment
Good point, I recall remembering in my history classes that only one President had ever been impeached and that went bad for the accusers, and it wasn't likely to happen again. Now it seems to be a once every 10 or 20 year regular event. Not good.

came across an interesting old cookbook this morning i had forgotten about...

couldn't help but look at this one...

notwithstanding the incredible amount of sugar, and even though there is a Home Depot right next to Ralph's, i'm not 100% sure about mixing food with building supplies.

i'm wondering if this is sort of the same process that makes grits from corn....?

by the way... my copy of the Lucy Delgado cookbook is original (1979) which i've seen copies selling for ~$70.00 ... i got mine for $3.50 long ago. watch out for copies, though. i believe there are copies around for ~$10, but don't buy an "original" unless you are sure about the source.

i would recommend any copy. it is a great cookbook, very old school and classic recipes you're not going to find many other places.

Calabaza Mexicana...

i've seen other pictures where it look more like a zucchini.
suppose i'll know one when i see one.
doubtful i'll ever make pumpkin candy, though.

A very handsome pumpkin! The pumpkin candy is tugging a memory for me - of a pumpkin fudge recipe, maybe? I'll see if I can track it down. It's been rumoured for decades that the Cherry Ripe chocolate bar, well-known in Australia, is made mostly from pumpkin (though there also stacks of coconut in it).

the mention of shepherds (Shepherd is my middle name) got me to looking at some old pictures. i had a feeling i was wrong... Agnes Shepherd was a Great Aunt...

AgnesShepherd.jpg

to offer a bit of translation... 'cantie bodie' = cheerful person; 'tae the Fit 'o Toon' = from the ... a part of Arbroath (Scotland) literally translates to "the foot of the town" ... aka the water's edge. Arbroath was/ is a fishing town. not sure of the exact date without a little more research, but if i had to guess... around the turn of the century (1900).

i wonder if she would ever have guessed where this picture might wind up some day... :)

"Don't worry Nannie... it's just the local newspaper."

What a wonderful piece of history! I did not know "mutch" was Scottish for headdress but "muts" is Dutch for a soft/knitted cap. Funny how old words survive in isolated pockets.

i missed that one...

1. A head-dress, esp. a close-fitting day cap of white linen or muslin with a goffered, gathered or trimmed border, specif. such as used to be worn by married women

i've been using this translation...

you know, i think i still have it wrong....

Robert Cargill was my grandfather... Agnes Shepherd must have at least been his aunt... it may have even been his great aunt.

so that would make her at least my great great aunt?
...or do you stop adding qualifiers after the first great?

i know someone who is a DAR... i always search for a topic to talk with her about anyway.

Hhhmmm... you're starting to make me think about Christmas possibilities, too. Treats that feel seasonal, but don't break the diet bank.

Great picture of your aunt, a real family heirloom.

I also have some scotch heritage, I am descended from Rob Roy Macgregor. It was always a family story, but I was skeptical. My more recent ancestors were Mackays not Macgregors. A few years ago I looked it up on the Mormon's genealogy website and sure enough I found my linage back to Rob Roy. Turns out some of his sons changed their name to Mackay, to hide the connection to Rob Roy. One of those sons migrated to Georgia and is my great great something grandfather. But that all happened way too long ago for us to have any Scottish artifacts.

I know the real Rob Roy probably had little to do with the Liam Neeson character in the movie, but we still liked it.

15-bean soup again today... no picture... great tasting, but i wish i could do something about the grayish brown color... :(

...I also have some scotch heritage, ....
a slight nitpick, but especially if you ever travel there... scotch is a beverage... the people are Scottish.

it's great to have an actual photo with a caption, but as a bit of advice especially to the younger people listening... if you run across family photos and still have living relatives who can identify people in those pictures... turn over the photo and write a note. some dozens of photos i have of unknown family members will likely never be recovered now that most of those their age are long gone. if you think... "oh, i'll remember that" ... think again; most brains don't work like that.

been seeing some diary entries about getting enough sleep. just to throw in my oddball example, i typically don't sleep for more than 4 hours at a time. if i get up in the middle of the night, i sometimes find something to do to keep me up, but most days i will take an "awake break" for an hour or two and then get another 3-4 hours... this time as long as it's quieter. in the initial four hours, i can sleep through an earthquake... i literally have more than one example of this.

regarding my schedule, indifference to my age, i should throw in that i'm retired.

Every person is different. I desperately need 7.5+ hours or I start eating everything I can get my hands on (not to mention being sluggish and grumpy).
