Milestones (Amy's diary)

I'm assuming your pesky sister is your older sister & is svelte :)
I love Tai Chi but would be happy to keep going to beginners classes for the rest of my life so that I am not expected to remember all of the moves. Our teacher used to make it fairly easy to follow & I loved her classes ( & her) but then she moved to northern NSW :( She's moving back again soon, but won't be living nearby.
Glad to see your weight has come straight back down again, Amy xo
About my sister - how did you know? o_O
And thanks! :) How was the golf?

Re your sister - when my mom backseat drives, I try to acknowledge her in the most uninterested voice I can muster - usually a "mmm" that is barely audible. I try to make it sound like I am actively discouraging comments without actually saying that! Pesky relatives!

I hope what they served at the work thing wasn't too fattening. It's only one meal, and I bet you burn through the extra calories in no time!!

For me it helps to take leftovers home (although I can see that being awkward at a work function); I´m not wasting anything plus I get to eat another portion of whatever loveliness I had before!

LaMa that's a completely different take on it , maybe we should try that. lol . However I hate when people force leftovers on me . Also I am a bit of a germ freak . I was at an anniversary thing recently and on leaving the daughter in law insisted I take leftovers home.despite numerous attempts to say no . Iwatched her cut leftovers , lick finger and place leftovers in box . You can guess where I put the leftover.

At restaurants here they usually just bring you a container or tin foil, so that problem's taken care of. I wouldn't be best pleased about your DIL's leftovers either!

How to deal with leftovers in restaurants, especially in work-related situations, got quite a lot of attention on the askamanager site a few years back - there was at that time quite a cultural difference between different countries in what was "normal" practice and what wasn't. It was seen as very reasonable and normal in North America, perhaps because restaurant serves are very generous there, but very variable elsewhere.
To quote:
"it would be odd to ask for leftovers in the UK. Except pizza. It’s totally okay to ask for the rest of your pizza in a takeaway box, for some reason."
"...doggy bags are considered tacky in Sweden and France, and I would imagine some other places as well. Honestly, it’s just not really done."
"[in Sydney] If the restaurant does takeaway food it’s generally not strange. If it doesn’t, kiss that food goodbye."

That was then, though - and I think things must have changed in some places?

I think it got better, at least in some places. Not in fancy restaurants, of course, but who has leftovers there? The simplest solution for me is to bring my own container. Saves on waste, I know it won´t spill in my bag and I don´t have to bother anyone. Plus: if it´s something I´m very tempted to overeat on I can put the amount I don´t want to eat into the container before I start eating, making it easier to stick to the portion I had in mind. Yes, some people will think it odd and maybe I wouldn´t do it on a first date, but otherwise who cares? Frame it as a positive (ideally something selfish like wanting to have a really decadent breakfast on the couch in your jammies) to give people a way out of feeling judged for not doing the same thing you do. Nobody likes a judgmental righteous person but everyone loves an epicure.

LaMa I love that idea of taking your own container . Tbh I think if you are paying for the food in a restaurant then bring it home for sure .

In California it is considered not wasting food if you get doggie bags and it is considered very politically correct, and also a nice treat! I had no idea it was considered tacky elsewhere. I guess some people don't like the idea of left overs?

The "tacky" quote on askamanager (a website mostly concerned with workplace questions) was from a few years back - I'm getting the feeling that things are changing, but still differ from region to region.
I knew a man who was in Sarajevo during the 1990s siege, and he told me about a restaurant there, at that time, which had a help-yourself buffet where if you didn't finish what you'd helped yourself to, you were charged double!

On another topic, carrying over from discussion elsewhere - yes, Lady Godiva was real, and so was her anti-oppressive-tax campaign!
Yes, and LaMa has pointed out our likely common ancestor, cuz!

We often ask for dogie bags, sometimes for our dogs, sometimes for ourselves. Even if you don't its better to waste food than to eat more than you should! I suppose under the conditions in Sarajevo during the siege exceptions could be made. That's one excuse for overeating I have never had.

I've heard similar stories about other places and can understand the sentiment when you run an all-you-can-eat. Some people are SO load up on the most expensive stuff on the buffet and then leave half for the trash. Threatening them with paying more, even if you never make good on that threat, probably helps them think ahead a little and may even make them eat less.

Yes I hate when at hotels to see the amount of wastage at breakfast . People's eyes are bigger than their bellies

True! and the temptation to overeat when the food is free (whether really free or "free" as in already paid for) is very common - not sure what that says about us all. Though (just my observation here, not "studies prove") people take more when they don't have to actually ask a person for the free food.

Reporting in on food experiments:
The okra has been a success, mostly being cooked up with tomato and green beans - so that's a vegetable that will be added to the possible, when I'm shopping.
The fake-fish cakes were a dismal failure. The fake canned tuna from the vegetarian shop looked very convincing, with even "skin" made from seaweed, but it didn't taste of anything much - maybe faintly of tomato sauce? So that's off the menu.

Reporting in on weight:
For the first time in I don't know how long, I'm under thirteen stone! I am very pleased, and am keenly eyeing up the next milestone, which will be to be under 180 pounds.

Congratulations, great work! I sometimes enjoy the taste of fake meats but they rarely agree with my stomach. Which is a good thing, I guess, because they tend to be expensive and unhealthy.

Aw congratulations Amy on the under 13 stone! That’s gotta feel so good!

Kudos on trying the fake fish anyway, you never know and sometimes might be pleasantly surprised. I’d like to try some new foods, I do the same 3 veggies over and over — broccoli, kale, spinach. Looking for lots of fiber and nutrients and I might give Swiss chard a try next as it’s supposed to be loaded. And if I can eat kale, I can eat anything! :rotflmao:

I'm under thirteen stone!
Good for you, that is Great!!

I like okra too, and it is hard to find around here. We did find a neighbor with it in their garden and the kids sell their excess, so I was able to buy 8 freshly picked okra. Ok, but they let them get a bit too big before picking. Next year will see if we can get some to grow in the garden, in this climate they will have to be started indoors in the spring. Okra should be picked when immature, maybe 3 to 4 inches, and if you let just one get big and woody then that plant will only produce woody okra. You really have to pick them everyday. There is little better than grazing okra right off the plants in the garden. I have gotten my best okra when I went out to the garden daily and picked and ate regularly.

Best of luck getting to 180, I am sure it will be soon.

re: your balancing video... in another video i've seen, i also discovered that just standing on one leg, your dominant side will be easier, is a "skill" that diminishes with age. i started to do some balance exercises after my hip replacement. it was my dominant side, but i had gotten so out of practice putting my full weight on that side, at first i could not balance on it for even a few seconds. something you would think wouldn't be hard. much better today, but i still wouldn't call ~30 seconds any medal winning time... :)

thanks for posting that video... i feel better knowing that the one leg stuff is at the top of the scale.
