Milestones (Amy's diary)

Thanks, Marsia! I wasn't able to make food just for me - but I did manage to not eat a single one of the apple pastries I made this past week, and only two of the little quiches, and I enjoyed cooking with heaps of cauliflower (bewilderingly about half the price of broccoli) and experimenting with cooking fennel - the soup would have been better with cream, but I refrained!

alligatorob - I'm shocked! *\o/* vegemite, glorious vegemite *\o/* is an absolutely indispensable component of the Australian diet! ;)
And the weigh-in... yes, I was up, but not as badly as I feared - a kilogram, or about two pounds. I'm hoping to knock that off in a couple of days, on the quickly on, quickly off principle.

Emilyrose - I've never thought of myself as having a devil-may-care attitude, but I'm getting a great kick out of the thought of it, and will claim it from now on! Thanks!

So... today begins not too badly, with the weight, as said above, not up by as much as I feared. Next on the agenda is the dentist - only a check-up, theoretically, but... we all know dentists! Then, depending on the dentist, a catch-up meal with a friend - she was talking about a "Classic Vegan" special somewhere, which sounds healthy, anyway! :)

Wow, congratulations on only a 2 pound gain!!! I bet you are right, and it will melt right off! I love fennel soup - yum, you are making me have phantom fennel smell-o-vision! Hope your dentist trip is uneventful and you find yummy Vegan choices!! In my experience I like to taste test Vegan stuff that is fake meat or cheese because both of those can be weird, but the straight up veggie dishes are usually wonderful. Hope you have a great catch up with your friend.

I´m not generally a fan of fake meats and cheeses (nor are they usually healthy, much like heavily processed animal products), but I am curious to hear about your vegan special!

Hooray! Passed the dentist with flying colours - no new fillings! :D (a picture of my toothy grin!)

Wow, congratulations on only a 2 pound gain!!!...
Thanks, Marsia! I'm still feeling pretty cheerful about it.
....I am curious to hear about your vegan special!

The Vegan special evaporated! It turned out that she had been thinking of a vegan festival which was last week - so we ended up eating Indian, along with another good friend - me, with some trepidation, because Indian food usually puts on pounds, for me.
But I avoided the malai kofta (which I've loved in the past, but I think it's pretty deadly, calorie-wise) and had a dish made with eggplant and peas - baigan peas bharta - which was new to me, and really good! and had just one glass of wine, and the three of us shared a serve of pistachio kulfi (the best kulfi I've ever had - I'd go back to that restaurant for the kulfi alone, I think).
It was a really good meal, a great catch-up, and I survived this morning's weigh being no worse off, though (probably thanks to the garlic naan ) the losing of the two pounds hasn't started yet.

I went to the dentist today too, I have a tooth that needs to come out. I knew it before the visit but now I have an appointment for the extraction. I hate going to the dentist!

Maybe I will give Vegemite another chance. I think I have to buy it online, don't think my local store has it.

I love good Indian food - my tummy is rumbling reading your post! Great about the dentist and the visit with friends. Sounds like a really good day all around!

No fillings required, good Indian food in good company, garlic naan? It does sound like a very good day.

Sorry about your tooth, alligatorob. :( I've often thought that the second set that children get should be supplemented by a third set, coming in at around ... thirty-five years? Whenever people are old enough and sensible and will look after them, anyway!
But about vegemite - I'd suggest holding off until you have a vegemite-eating Australian with you, to guide you in how much to eat, and what on!

Yes, the food was indeed delicious, and more than we could eat, so we all had leftovers to carry home and eat the next day - it was certainly a good day! And today is starting well, too - the downward trend has begun, though only by a half-pound. :)

Good idea! I am ready for mine now. Until I got to my 50s my teeth were nearly perfect, few cavities and no problems. But its been down hill from there. My grandfather on my father's side died at 92 with all his teeth, no fillings and no problems. I don't think he ever even went to a dentist. I got to thinking I would be so lucky, but it wasn't to be.

That isn't bad. You know you are a lot close to your goal weight than I am, so on a % of fat that needs to go basis that is probably more than me losing 2 pounds.

Thanks for the kind words, people! They really do encourage me. :)

Taking home leftovers is so much better than trying to eat it all in one go!

:D Ab-so-lutely! I was glad that I'd got into the habit of checking how full I felt before ploughing in to what was on the table.
(I was brought up on the "clear your plate, no fussy eating" line, and unhappily I think it sticks!)

Yup, mostly to the ribs. But taking leftovers home makes it not feel wasteful AND you get another delicious meal (free!) while continuing to eat when you're full never tastes quite as good.

Hey Amy, thanks for all the good words, your support is appreciated.

Why don't you update your diary, it would be nice to know how you are doing.

Thanks Rob! Sorry about the past few days silence - I've been away, off and on, plus my laptop battery is dying - I'll try to get a new one when I can sort out a trip to the city.
But you asked for an update! Okay, here goes:
I'm back here visible after a time doing more of the same family visiting - as I've mentioned in the 180s Club notes, this wasn't great for weight goals. I feel as if I've been in that Club for far too long - so this morning - the first since my return, I marched to the market and bought two heads of broccoli (as well as oranges and things), and will be making a short, hard run at getting out of it, or at least down to the mini-goal of under 13 stone by August the eighth - ie a week from today.
In family terms, though, all the visits were positive, all relationships (which can - as in most families - be volatile at times) strengthened as a result. In particular, one branch of the family (the roast veg, followed by Turkish restaurant branch, if we're talking diet damage) were really happy with the visit, and one person from a different branch, in hospital (as a result, partly, of diabetes and infection damage) greatly appreciated someone being wiling to travel to be supportive, especially to his home, after discharge, because it's a bit out of the way. So all up, though there were drawbacks for me personally, I think it was a good block of travelling to have done.

Nice to have you back, Amy! Looks like you've been quite efficient the past couple of days even if diet wasn't the focus.

That's great you have family who appreciates you and who you enjoy spending time with. And really glad to hear you are refocusing on you and your goals again now! Good to have you back!!

Thanks, friends! The weight-loss is definitely back in focus now - the first 24 hours of a week-long drive has gone well. :) I'm not doing the intermittent fasting approach, but I am cutting out eating after 6:00 pm, which seems to work for me - along with having good, simple food (like broccoli!) ready to go.

(And I do have a great family, occasional volatility notwithstanding!)
