Oh, and predicting stupidity is a skill we all need to better develop. Both when dealing with others, and when dealing with our own decisions.

Australia is on my bucket list, I've never been. If we make it down it probably won't be for a year or so. In some ways Australia is like the US, too big to easily prioritize what to see and where to go on a trip. Oh well, we have some time to think about it.

Thanks Rob. I’d hardly say 4kms is a long run. When I was high school I ran 8-10km a night 5 days a week (hating every step) but I will over time build up the distance. The idea of a triathlon is growing on me. Just need to work on my running distance. 1km swim = piece of cake, 50km ride = piece of cake, 11km run = lots more training required, putting it all together = I’m going to die!

Australia is great. I can honestly say I’ve been very lucky. I’ve travelled solo around some very remote areas and loved every minute. As long as you enjoy driving you have everything from arid desert to rainforest and even snowy mountains and tropical islands. Personally I love the desert. If you ever get the chance small towns like Ceduna are really worth it. I used to travel to Ceduna fortnightly for work (8 hour drive or 1 hour flight from Adelaide). It’s right at the start of the nullabour but the beaches are amazing and some of the worlds best fishing!

Absolutely agree. Some of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard came from my own mouth and some of the stupidest tings I’ve ever seen were done by my own hands.

When I was a teenager we were travelling down the Murray river in our boat (a 1940’s carvel plank yacht weighing in at 30 tonne), moving into a lock which has a 2m thick concrete wall plated with 2inch thick steel. Due to a mechanical fault in the drive selector the boat went careering full throttle into the wall of the lock. I was right up at the bow with my brother (4 years older) just behind me. I instinctively moved right to the front to “catch” the wall with my feet and fend off. Luckily my brother saw me, predicted my stupidity, grabbed a hold (by the jocks) and pulled me back. Seconds later the front of the boat where I was trying to get to was completely crushed against the steel and concrete wall.

Phew! I am very glad your brother was so quick!

And yes, about stupidity coming out of one's own mouth. I still cringe at a stupid, stupid thing I said to two work colleagues many years ago. :(

Good day today. Late morning jog up mount lofty (timer somehow paused again so I don’t have a complete record of my uphill run. I do have a complete time but I don’t have a ranking because it didn’t record that I was moving; only that at one point I was at the bottom and then 28 minutes later I was 800m from the top!

Broke my PB on the downhill run despite a slight side strain though so I’m happy.

Afterwards I visited my dad and buffed all his floors and dry cleaned his carpet. That was hard work; would have burned a few calories that’s for sure.

Can’t get the triathlon idea out of my head so I think I’ve found my end game!

Just going to finish some laundry now, hit the weights a little and go to bed I think. CF1A8F13-4D51-433F-ADC7-4C947A40ED25.jpeg13BF5886-BC20-4B39-9274-465AF940E274.jpeg

Thanks TM, I had to look both Ceduna and Nullabour up, shows my ignorance. That is the southern coast, I am guessing the water is cold, is that true? The climate in Ceduna looks nice, not too hot in summer, not too cold in winter.

I also like deserts, but our most likely target dates are January and February (2021), I suspect your deserts are pretty hot then. I'd like to see the rainforest and beaches also. I do like driving and exploring. When we do go we will probably try to stay at least a month to give us time to see a lot, it will probably be out only trip.

I have twice had the chance to travel to Australia on business, but neither worked out. Most recently was to go to Sydney, but because of other commitments I could only stay 1 day, it would have been more hours on an airplane than in Australia, I decided that did not make sense and stayed home.

Great story; you have a good brother. A trip down the Murray River sounds exotic, that must have been fun for a kid.

I’ve spent most of my life on the river in different boats. I’m restoring a 19ft sloop currently with the dream of taking it camping up the Murray.

Ceduna is a very small town. I’d hardly expect anyone not familiar with the area to know haha. Population about 3000 I believe. The weather is great but gets VERY cold at night. The water can get cold yes but it’s nice swimming in summer.

I love the water and boating, have all my life. I spent more time in saltwater than fresh, but have put in a lot of miles on bayous and rivers as well. I have a boat here that I trailered from Florida, but Utah is not the greatest place to boat. I keep mine in the water all summer in one of Utah's few marinas with boat slips and get out when I can. My boat is nothing so exotic as a restored sloop, just a fiberglass skiff, but it gets me on the water.

As long as you stay dry the boat really doesn’t matter.

There’s nothing exotic about my sloop I can tell you that. It’s just a very simple open hull home made jobby but it does the job. This is how I bought it all the work so far has just been replacing the floor and getting the engines running so it looks exactly the same still CD1BFC52-A56A-4242-9B6D-3E6FD653FB04.jpeg

Good ride tonight. Fitting a new chain the other day really has made a difference. It’s MUCH smoother now. Also I got a new “out front” mount for my computer so it’s easier to view.

Broke my PB for my local hill climb “Uley Road” at 16:41. I’m now 200th all time (out of 373). The fastest time ever up that climb is 9:33. Me thinks he can keep that time (1st is a whole 45 seconds faster than 2nd!).

Time to hit the weights then go to bed. D01944DA-348C-4F64-A34E-DCAC5D2F39F0.jpeg

I like your boat, but I know a wooden boat can be a lot of work. Couldn't find a picture of mine, but this is a picture I took from the boat a couple of months ago.willard bay.JPG

Ive pulled up a little sore in the right knee today after the ride yesterday. I think I need to adjust my clear position slightly and there was lots of rain around so I forwent the ride and took a jog with the dog instead. I was expecting my knee to be sore while jogging but it was fine. I definitely felt the burn in the quads though. Same area but the muscles are used differently when cycling so it really highlighted how much work I need to do on my running.

I now have a completely knackered soaking wet dog in my bed!6EA06AAF-18F1-488D-87E1-5FEE7ED7159D.jpeg

Ah the life of a cyclist ...

Took a ride along the busy main roads tonight to mix it up. A couple of very close passes and one extremely abusive driver who questioned my intelligence and politely suggested that I should vacate the road; pointing out is was night time. I didn’t quite catch the rest but it was about 30 seconds of straight expletives. It’s strange really; dressed in fluorescent yellow with reflective strips on my back and heels with 2; that’s right TWO flashing tail lights and a bright solid headlight but I needed to be told it was night time?

Ah well, I take solace in the the thought these fools are just deeply unhappy and trying to make themselves feel better. Probably a little jealous too.

Anyway good ride, a little longer than I intended to do but I feel good having done it. I think I’ll rest tomorrow. My knee was giving me a bit of grief on the second half. C6845C07-CCFA-44B8-8888-405A5905A9E0.jpeg

Also I’ve signed up for a cycling challenge to raise money to fight childhood cancer in October. No details to share at this point but here’s a link to the event website. I’ll have my own personal page in August sometime apparently and I can start asking for sponsorship from then.

I’d love some support when the time comes if anyone feels the urge!
