I have a problem with carbs, a real problem. I just love it.

This morning I had Muesli with Nesquick and sugar.

I do exercise most days, I swim about half a mile or I walk for an hour. I used to be a runner and when I tried a few months ago I hurt my Patella and it is painful now.

I would love to be in a place again where I could run or play tennis.

Every time I start dieting I try the 'big bang' approach and cut everything out.. maybe I should reach easier goals. If anyone has suggestions I would appreciate it.

Yesterday I had :

1 Whole wheat toast with spagetti sauce (better than it sounds :) ).
1 Orange for a snack.
A diet frozen meal with some rice (350 cals).

Not a bad start but then this happened.

1 jar of Nutella, yep.. that's right.. I didn't stop until it was empty!

3 slices of Vegetarian Pizza.

I did walk for 30 mins and swim half a mile.

Not quite sure what I am going to do today... I think breakfast is my problem.

If there are any suggestions for breakfast I would appreciate it.

In December I am going on a trip to South Africa which entails a flight of around 20 hours. I would like to weigh a lot less than I do currently to be able to enjoy my trip and the flight.

Thanks.

I think the problem is reducing your calories and more importantly your protein by so much your body panics. Try having that toast with eggs, for example, and see if it doesn´t keep you happier longer.

Thank you LaMaria, I will try that tomorrow and report back. I will try poached eggs.

Welcome to the forum Terry. You need to make sure that you are eating enough calories from healthy food to ensure you are getting enough nutrients. Don't throw your body into panic mode. As LaMa said, eggs are excellent protein. Adding veggies to every meal helps bulk it out & add lots of nutrition. Are you going to count calories for a while? I try to have almost a third of my day's calories at breakfast, always with some protein & that seems to stop any cravings during the day. I'm glad I don't like Nutella! :)

Not proud of myself yesterday, so I'll just say that I am trying and will continue trying.

This morning I had two pieces of toast, two poached eggs (I need to work on how to do this properly in the microwave) and a small tomato. Thanks Cate and LaMaria for the suggestions, I do feel quite full now.

I've also done a 20 minute HIIT so far and plan on going to the gym later to cycle for 30 minutes.

For lunch I am planning on having a diet frozen lunch and some steamed brussle sprouts.

I will be going to the grocery store to buy yoghurts and other type healthy food tomorrow.

My main goal for this year is to be below 300 before December 8th. I guess smaller goals would be 319, 309.

:) You're lucky you don't like Nutella.
I'm thinking about counting calories but I've done this in the past and got quite bored doing it... but I will try again. I think my aim would be to have around 2000 calories a day.

Hi, Terry. Eggs poached in the microwave-
INGREDIENTS
1 egg
1/2 cup water
INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Half fill a straight-sided coffee mug with water. Crack an egg and let it slide down the side of the mug to the bottom. (This keeps the yolk intact.) Make sure there's just enough water in the mug to cover the egg by 1/2 inch. This should leave at least 2 inches empty at the top of your mug.

  2. Place a saucer over the top of the mug and microwave it on HIGH for 1 minute. Check the egg for doneness. If needed, microwave again in 15-second bursts, checking after each, until it's done.

  3. Gently tilt the mug and remove the egg carefully with a slotted spoon. Serve immediately.
*Use a straight-sided mug. Don't forget to use a saucer on top of the mug.*
To do 2 eggs I would either just repeat the process afresh or use 2 mugs & experiment with how long it takes. I have never tried this way of poaching eggs but will give it a go now that I have seen this.
When you do your healthy shop I recommend not buying Nutella :) I try not to have the things in the house that I can't seem to control eating too much of. Raisins I can't leave alone!
PS I'm no expert on nutrition. I have soaked up lots of info over the years & have also learned the hard way. If you are losing weight without counting calories, then why bother? It is tedious, but it makes me think twice about what I put in my mouth.I'll do it for a while until I get my weight going back down again.

What Cate said. Writing down what you eat tends to be helpful to be conscious of what you´re eating and looking at new foods to see what they give you in nutrition and calories (per portion) but other than that if you have a feel for what your body needs and are prepared to experiment and adapt if things aren´t working I think you´ll do fine without counting.

Thank you Cate for the instructions! I'm going to try that now.

Hi terry
Well done on what you have lost so far .
I too know loads about nutrition as I have been dieting in and off for 30 years since I was 19 or so.
Nutella is the devils food lol , get rid. !
Yoghurts I eat every day but just watch the sugar content . Some are very high . Keep an eye out for the Greek high protein variety . The one I eat now has about 3.8g of sugar per 100g and very low calories . I have with fruit and maybe a spoonful of toasted almonds . A health snack to fill you up.
I love poached eggs am going to try your method Cate .
Peanut butter again go for the organic nutty one with no added ingredients. I have that with an Apple cut up or I might have it on a wholewheat bagel with sliced bananas on top for a good enjoyable lunch.
Try to make meals interesting .

Made a chicken jambalaya last night it was delicious. Really had to force myself to stick to one portion though .

Thank you Petal001 and Cate for your encouragement and advice.
I am going to have a look at those yoghurts now to see what they comprise of. When I got them from the store they looked pretty good, Greek Yoghurt 100cals. I will check the sugar in a bit.
I like your idea about a wholewheat bagel with peanut butter and banana, is it a whole bagel or half ?
This morning (I have trouble sleeping) I was watching "the Sugar Movie" : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3892434/ and it is quite shocking. I must admit that I suffer from having had too much sugar in my life. It is on Amazon Prime at the moment, it's defintely worth a watch.

Yesterday :
Breakfast: Two pieces of toast, two poached eggs, a small tomato. Getting better at the poached eggs but one is always undercooked and the next overcooked, still working on it.
Are there any suggestions for different breakfasts ? I can have poached eggs most days but I don't think every day. Is Oatmeal good ? What should I look out for ?
Lunch: Small portion Spagetti mince.
Snack : 2 Yoghurts, 2 Oranges.
Dinner : Small portion Spagetti mince and brussle sprouts.

Exercise : 60 Minute walk, 30 Minute cycle at gym, 20 Minute HIIT.

It would be great if I lost 3 pounds every day :) However this is probably just water or something.
Good exercise yesterday and luckily the Spagetti mince leftovers are now done. I need to think of meal variations.

Terry
You could scramble the eggs lol . Or make French toast . As you are having the bread anyway it is just a variation . I would top it with portion of fresh fruit and sprinkle of cinnamon.

I don’t like oatmeal myself unless as overnight oats but I believe it’s a great start to the day .

I would worry you might not be eating enough at main meals so bulk it up with salad and veg

I have a full bagel think about 230 cals the peanut butter is 100 and banana around 70 maybe .

I had a chicken salad for lunch today. It was late so won’t have much today .

Dinner ideas - salmon , other fish , lots of veg and salad . Homemade curries .

Do you mind saying which country you live in as perhaps we could Guage what type of foods seasonal there etc .

Hi Petal,
Thank you for the suggestions.
I live in Florida in the USA.

I'm liking the idea of the Bagel the more I think about it, I believe it is going to be on my menu very soon!

I am going to grill some chicken breasts today and have some veggies with it.

I think one of my problems is not knowing how to only have one slice of pizza, so that I don't feel like I'm missing out. I have to work on that.

Cheers
Terry
