Hello, my name is Tom, I'm 22 years old and I'm from the United Kingdom. I was looking for some kind of message board where people log their progress and give each other advice and support, and this one seemed good to me.

My weight has fluctuated throughout my life, though it has been on a pretty sharp increase over the course of the last six years. Aged 16, at the same height I am currently, I weighed roughly 14st (196lbs). I wasn't happy with this at the time and thought I was very overweight. My eating habits had always been pretty poor, but at the time I was playing squash at a reasonable level and training three or four times every week. Any of you who play squash will know that it can be a very high intensity sport, so while I wasn't losing any weight, it was certainly offsetting my poor eating habits.

Later that year I became ill and was forced to stop playing squash for six months. During this time I gained almost 20 pounds and both my fitness and technique diminished, leading me to fall out of love with the sport. Since becoming ill at around 14st, I have gained over 6st more throughout the past six years. On Sunday I weighed in at 20st 8.2lbs (288.2lbs), my heaviest weight yet.

I have recently been getting back into the sport, and after a few failed attempts at losing weight over the past few years, I decided to tie it in with my weight loss efforts. I have a membership at a local health club where I can play squash, work out and swim free of any additional cost, so the opportunity to exercise is most definitely there. My day job is very sedentary so this will be crucial for me.

In terms of food, I am trying to limit my calorie intake to between 1,500 and 1,900 calories every day. For the most part I find this doable, although I am prone to going out for lunch with friends unexpectedly or indulging in a boozy night out. Limiting these occasions will be a challenge, but something I need to do. I don't tend to drink anything other than water on day-to-day basis which is a good start I guess.

Over the first three days of my journey which I started on Sunday, I have just about hit my calorie target on all three days as well as swimming lengths for an hour on Monday and playing an hour of squash yesterday. I weighed myself this morning and came in three pounds down on my starting total.

I have set a couple of weight loss goals for myself:
  • To lose 14 pounds by July 31st. This may seem drastic but I am already 3 pounds down after just 3 days, and I am going on a very active holiday in a couple of weeks time. I definitely think this is achievable for me.
  • To lose 56 pounds by December 31st. This equates to just over 2 pounds per week. I feel like I need to set an ambitious goal to really push myself, although if I get close to this figure I will be delighted.
My ultimate goal weight is somewhere around 13st (182lbs), although I will ultimately be more interested in my physique than my weight as I would like to start building muscle at some stage of my journey too.

While I have tried to lose weight before, I have never felt this motivated or invested and I really am determined to succeed this time. It's time for me to sort this out while I am still young, so I don't miss out on any more opportunities in life.

I will be posting regular updates on how I am doing, and later today will put some photos I took of myself on Sunday, before I started. I'll also be around to support others on their journey, and hope that some of you may return the favour!

Hey hun! I'm from the UK too. Sounds like you're very determined - this forum is a great support and I find logging my food every day very helpful. Lots of us have fitbits too which are good!

Thanks Sunflower! Having a look around and it certainly seems very supportive. I don't have a Fitbit myself, but might look into getting one.

Did alright again today I think in terms of what I was eating. Didn't get to the gym as I am still sore as hell from squash yesterday, but will be going tomorrow evening.

I don't tend to eat breakfast in the week. For lunch I had a Thai green curry from this health food shop near my work (don't know exactly but would estimate 500kcal max), then I had a turkish delight chocolate bar as a snack in the afternoon (217kcal) and a chicken tikka masala & pilau rice microwave meal (388kcal) for dinner with some mini poppadoms (171kcal). Only drank water all day, so that leaves me at 1,376kcal for the day, which is a little less than I'd typically have. Might have a light snack a bit later to bring me up to 1,500.

Going for a drink after work tomorrow at a bar where they give out free peanuts, popcorn and wasabi peas in abundance, so will have to limit myself! Planning to either get in the gym or the pool afterwards.

Hi, Tom & welcome to the forum. It's great that you are able to get back into being active again. I'm sure the weight will drop off you. Most men lose much quicker than women & you sound like you are in a good headspace.
Skipping breakfast is not a good idea. Even a small bowl of yoghurt with some fruit would be a good start to your day. You could add a little almond meal for extra protein. It's Winter here in Oz, so I often have a small bowl of warmed up oats, with a cup of unsweetened almond milk, a banana & a teaspoon of honey. I don't even think about food until lunch time.
A little tip before you go to the bar. Have some healthy protein (some raw almonds maybe) just before you go. It will help control blood alcohol levels & cravings for unhealthy foods. I usually have some beef jerky in my handbag in a small zip lock bag. It could be carried in your pocket of course.
I find keeping a diary here keeps me focussed & is great therapy. There are such lovely people in here who have one another's best interests at heart. I find most people, outside the forum, don't really want to hear all about what you're eating & what you do at the gym. We do :) Welcome to our little community of people from all over the world.

Hi Cate, thanks for the support and the much-appreciated advice! I often struggle for time in the mornings hence skipping breakfast, but will make an effort to eat something small every morning. I don't handle dairy tremendously well so the almond milk sounds like a good idea.

My drink after work has been cancelled, but I forgot that I am due out for lunch at my favourite steakhouse for a friend's birthday today. We usually each get our own steak and share a load of sides, so I will have to restrain myself on that front! Will have a light dinner tonight and work out this evening.

You're right, keeping a diary does seem like a great way to keep on track. Totally get what you're saying about people not wanting to hear about it - I've definitely bored my friends to death with my previous failed attempts at losing weight! Looking forward to getting involved more in the community.

Bravo Tom! I'm new on this site too and so far I've mostly been reading, but it does help the motivation knowing there are so many others all in the same boat.

Hope all goes well for you, you've got this!!

Thank you - likewise! Will be following your diary too!

So I went out for lunch today for my friend's birthday, we didn't go to the restaurant I expected so it was a burger and chips instead of steak. I had a smaller portion of chips though, so could have been worse. Always difficult to count calories with restaurant food, but I would estimate 1,000kcal for the meal. Unfortunately I had to work at home tonight so didn't get to the gym, though I kept my eating under control. Dinner was three scrambled eggs on some buttered wholemeal toast (380kcal), and I also had a packet of Popchips when I got hungry later on (97kcals). Not sure how widely available these are, but I love them as a low calorie snack. They're like thin and crispy rice crackers, and I definitely recommend the barbecue flavour.

Since I haven't exercised since Tuesday I'll definitely be going to the gym tomorrow evening. I'll also be sure to eat some breakfast which I do not typically make time for. Been a very busy week at work, and tomorrow promises more of the same, but I'm looking forward to the weekend!

Sounds good! Don't forget to eat some fruit in there as well as veg :) -chips don't count ;)

Another good day in terms of eating, but frustratingly another day when having to work late has stopped me going to the gym as I'd have liked. Thankfully I only have very little work left to do over the weekend, so I'm looking forward to working out tomorrow morning.

I finally had breakfast today! Okay it was only a granola bar (192kcal) and some apple juice (70kcal), but at least it was something. For lunch I had a BLT sandwich on wholemeal bread (462kcal), another granola bar (192kcal) and some mango (54kcal). As a snack in the afternoon I had a packet of Popchips (97kcal). For dinner I had a chicken jalfrezi ready meal (391kcal), and afterwards I had a fat free yoghurt (99kcal). 1557kcal for the day is a figure I'm pleased with.

Although I will definitely make it to the gym, tomorrow will undoubtedly be a bad day for me. It is one of my closest friends' birthday and we are out on a bar crawl with our old school friends and going for pizza, though I will still try to make as many good food choices as possible. That aside, it should be a great night so I'm looking forward to it nonetheless!

Still a good day Tom & a granola bar for breakfast is better than no breakfast :D

Yesterday was great fun but pretty terrible nutrition-wise, as expected. Today was better though as I kept my eating under control. Had a bowl of Kelloggs Just Right for breakfast with some almond milk (161kcal), then a small chicken wrap (308kcal) and a slice of leftover pizza (388) for lunch. I had another bowl of cereal in the afternoon (161kcal) and some cured meats (330kcal), and finally a small chicken chow mein ready meal (297kcal). 1,645 calories for the day - I typically aim for between 1,500 and 1,600 but will let myself off as I was nursing a hangover.

Shame the weekend is over, but it's been a good one. Back on the grind for five more days, then off to Spain for a much needed break!

Look at you, eating breakfast! I never fancy breakfast.. I do all my eating in the evening like a gremlin. Calories are really good Tom - well done!

Welcome to the forum Tom...you seem determined and that is key to get things going! Keep pushing it...if you are having trouble keeping tabs on your calories while eating out, I would suggest downloading My Fitness Pal, they have a HUGE database so most of the stuff and restaurants you eat should be in there. In addition, it's a good tool to keep track on your fitness routine.....I find that even during busy days, some exercise is better than NO EXERCISE, so if you don't have time to make it to the gym, maybe do a quick at home workout (trust me, you can break a sweat in 10-20minutes) or a light walk to your destination. I don't believe in punishing yourself for having a social life or a couple of cheat meals a week, HEY IT'S PART OF LIFE, but if you have a goal then you need to put work/focus on it in order to achieve such (and sometimes that means making some not so easy choices of avoiding going out or limiting yourself if you do it often)........being healthy and making lifestyle changes that are beneficial on a long-term basis can be hard, but it's also THE BEST thing you can do for yourself...it will bring you quality of life, in addition to an entire new outlook on nutrition...remember this, THESE ARE YOUR CHOICES AND YOU ARE IN CONTROL...treat your body well and it will give you answers sooner than you imagine.

Best of Luck,

Xoxo

Thanks Sunflower! Yeah I never used to eat breakfast and could always go until midday without eating, but would then overeat at lunchtime.

Thanks for the advice and support CaliGirl! I am using MyFitnessPal at the moment to track my calorie intake and finding it very useful. I've been trying to walk more in general, so as you say, even when I don't manage to specifically work out it's good to still have some activity.

Certainly making the lifestyle adjustment to go out less is very important for me, it will be difficult as most of my school friends are still living locally so there is ample opportunity for social events, but I plan to be more selective of when I do so - the end of the working week is no longer a good enough reason to go to the pub!

So today was a tough day at work, but a pretty good one too. Had a super productive day and dealt with some tasks that I hadn't been looking forward to. In terms of eating, I had a granola bar for breakfast again (192kcal), a thai green curry for lunch (500kcal), another granola bar as a snack (192kcal) and some pasta with chicken and tomato (389kcal). Finally as I still had some room to treat myself at the end of the day, I had the last remaining packet of my favourite crisps (249kcal) which aren't particularly healthy, but at least the temptation is no longer there! That adds up to 1522kcal for the day.

I also had a weigh-in this morning and came in at 282.6lbs, 5.6lbs down from my starting weight last Sunday which I am pleased with. Already I am noticing that I actually feel more energetic thanks to my diet, and while I used to get acid reflux quite often, I haven't had it all week. Hopefully I keep seeing the benefits!
