Cowboy's Diary

I heard Terry Crews say in a recent interview that he doesn't eat between 10pm and 2pm which seems like a very long time not to eat to me but he said it as though he does that every single day.

I can't really say personally what I think about it other than from a social point of view, that seems like it would be very difficult to pull off. What style of fasting are you all considering? Like a couple days on, couple days off or something else?

Hey Cowboy, It's me Jen. I saw you posted in my old journal asking about Chef and I. Just thought I'd let you know I started fresh... completely fresh...with a new username and all. It's a clean slate. lol! I have a new journal under this account.

Chef and I are back at low carb. I'm curious to see how the fasting goes. Good luck! :)

Fasting does have some great science behind it, especially for those who are insulin resistant, it works well with low carb (keto) because on a quality low carb eating plan you will often not feel like eating for many hours at a time.

Hi, Cowboy. I did 5:2 ( https://thefastdiet.co.uk/ ) for about 6 months & felt it worked well, but found it really hard to go back to after having a break from it. I have been thinking about giving it another crack. It takes a couple of weeks to get back into the swing of it again & it's best to be busy on the fast days, but not do anything too strenuous. Just typing about it has me feeling my stomach could do with a shrinking. I miss that light feeling!
It's good having you back again xo

I don´t think fasting is bad per se but I do hope/assume you´ll discuss it with your GP as there are people for whom it could be harmful. Best of luck!

I read a large study about fasting vs caloric restriction yesterday after reading about this and the conclusion that particular study came to was that fasting works better in the long run for weight loss and maintenance compared to simply restricting calories but that it had a slightly higher "drop out" rate for participants. Essentially meaning, it works as long as you can tolerate doing it. :p

In the study I read, the participants alternated between eating 25% of their normal caloric needs then having a "feasting" day where they ate 125% of their normal caloric needs and they just alternate back and forth.

Not sure yet. I will probably play it by ear so to speak. May look at couple of days of fasting a week. I will see how it goes as I will be running at least 3 days a week. I may try it on one of the days that I run to see how my body responds

Hi Jen,

Fresh starts are always good. Good to see you back!

Hi Tru.

Yeah this scientist says it isn't the carbs, fats and sugars you are eating that directly influence whether you gain weight or not but how those things affect your insulin levels. I am going to stay on the low carb and maybe try the fasting a couple of days a week. I am not sure if it will work for me but I am always up for experimentation.

Hi Cate,

I figured it would make me feel lighter - hopefully it will make me weigh less too. I am more worried about how it will affect my exercise and running. So much science out there on best things to eat when running or exercising- this is kind of a sideways direction to go. Hopefully it works though.

Hi LaMa,

Yeah I am healthy as a horse and I know my body pretty well and if it doesn't work for me then I am eating pie-lol. No, I just want to see what it does and if the science is true. There is so much crap written out there by so called diet experts. This one kind of intrigue me so thought I would give it a go.

Hi Mike,

I remember a diet I went on years ago and the diet pretty much did just as you said. You ate 500 calories one day, 1200 calories the next , then 800 calories, etc. . I guess it didn't want your body to know what kind of input it was getting so it didn't know whether to hold on to calories or let them go. I don't think it worked for me as I lost most of my weight by exercising and eating normal foods and cutting back on portion size. That still seems like the way to go but as I get older and it becomes harder and harder to lose - I am up for something new.

Well it has been some time since I posted here. My holiday to St. Lucia was wonderful. That is such a nice place- it was just what I needed then.

I have been perusing your diaries over the last few months but have been busy so haven't posted in my own-lol.

Weight has stayed pretty much the same. I haven't been running as much lately but still get out at least once a week. Boot camping still but that was cancelled for the next couple of months so I have to ramp up the running again.

I have been doing the low carb thing for a while now and as of late I haven't been as strict as I should have been - damn that chocolate cake-haha. I have been really watching what I eat but not so much on the carb side.

My wife and I are going to try something else to jump start her weight loss- she has been plateauing recently and she wants to lose the last 30 pounds or so. We are going to try fasting. We found a book that a scientist wrote- can't remember his name right now but he has been preaching about the low carb diet for a long time. He says that fasting is actually something we should do in conjunction with the low carb diet as it promotes a healthy body. I have never been much on this but my wife wants to try and so I told her I would do it with her. We will see if it works and if it works with my being so active. Time will tell.

I am going to try to post more on here as I go through this fasting journey. Good or Bad? Who knows but I am going to try it and see.

I think it all depends on your body - I've seen fasting work tremendously for some people but I've also seen it make them super angry and eat out of frustration. I think as long as you have the willpower you'll be ok.

Well another month has gone by and I haven't posted again. Why as you get older does time seem to go by so much faster?

Okay enough about that. Fasting. I have been doing that since the beginning of the August. No, I have eaten in the last month-lol. My wife and I decided at the beginning of August as she had hit a plateau in her weight loss that she couldn't seem to break. We did some research and fasting came up and so we have been on this journey for the past month or so.

How is it going you ask-lol? Well her plateau is no longer so she is happy she is losing again. Funny when we started I had my doubts. I am fairly active so I wasn't sure how it was going to affect my running etc. We started with a 36 hour fast. My stomach was kind of queasy to begin with but I got through it. What we have been doing subsequently is 24 hour fasts every second day. Due to our timetable we eat one day - breakfast, dinner and supper and then we fast until the following day's supper again- then repeat. It hasn't been that hard as we are eating Keto on the days we do eat. Plus if some days we are hungry we eat something.

My running has been good. Boot camp classes were cancelled for while so I have had to ramp up my running again- which is good. I seem to have a lot of energy for running and the fasting hasn't really affected speed or endurance.

On another note I have lost more weight and my skin seems to be tightening up and that feeling of being bloated is long gone.

We are going to continue the fasting until the end of the month and re-access our plan going forward. I can't see fasting as something you can do forever but maybe I am wrong. I am not sureif there are people that do this for extremely long periods of time but I guess there could be.

I am currently reading a book about eating Ketogenic for athletes. I don't consider myself an athlete but I do run-lol. It is very interesting as carbs are usually what they say runners burn for fuel but it is better if you can burn fat for fuel as you don't 'bonk' in long races as fat seems to be an endless fuel supply. An interesting read so far.

That is it for today. Keep fighting the fight!!

I have been keto for years as an athlete but not a runner, it does work and there are plenty of longer distance runners in a couple of online groups I am on that have said that keto helped their long distance running, it takes time to become fully fat adapted but it is worth it.

Hi Tru,

Any issues or things that came up that I should be on the lookout for? I have read a few books but how do you know you have become fat adapted? Since you have been doing this for a long time- any body changes or inadequacies that you have noticed? Have you tried fasting in conjunction with Keto? Will it help build muscle as I am doing weight bearing exercises as well? Help with the toning etc? Sorry for all the questions but figured I would ask an expert on what to expect if I am going to continue this.

probably one of the biggest thing to look out for is making sure you get enough electrolytes, magnesium, potassium and salt, lack of electrolytes can lead to headache, brain fog and muscle cramps. I prefer to get my electrolytes through my food bud others simply supplement to keep it simple.

for building muscle the principle of keeping carbs low with adequate protein is the same as for fat loss however to build muscle calories need to be higher, this comes from adjusting fat intake which is used for energy rather than being stored on the body once you are fat adapted. Becoming adapted can take months. While getting adapted most people will feel weaker in the gym with less energy, as you adapt your energy levels return.

I don't use supplements normally (I am taking a pregnancy supplement at the moment) and one particular type of supplement ( Exogenous Ketones) are completely useless when it come to the main claim of weight loss, as during a ketogenic diet you produce your own, however for distances runners I have seen people have success using them for a boost of energy during long runs instead of consuming fast acting glucose.

As for fasting, it is not something I have done on purpose, but with a keto diet the appetite is suppressed a lot and it is very easy to miss meals simply because there is no hunger, at the moment I have to concentrate on not missing meals as fasting during pregnancy is not healthy.

Thanks Tru! My energy is better than it was and I think my body is adapting. Thanks goodness-lol. Thanks for the tips.

Wow time flies when you are having fun!! I can't believe it has been this long since I posted anything. To catch up with what I have been doing, I am running still- finished about 5 -10K runs last year. I have been doing Bootcamps. I have also been eating Keto and have been doing intermittent fasting for about the last 5 months. My weight has been good - well except for some non keto stuff over Christmas -lol but overall I have been behaving myself.

For this year I am going to continue Keto and the fasting. I have 8-10Ks planned and I would really like to run a Full Marathon in Oct. I have set the marathon goal before but have never really accomplished that but here is hoping that this is the year.

This is kind of a different year for me. My Mom died 20 years ago last year. She died at 57. This year I will be 57 and the thoughts that go through your mind are weird. Am I going to do the same? I know I probably won't as my Mom died from Cancer but it still crosses my mind. I would like to run a Marathon both for me and in honor of my Mom. I am not sure if I will do it yet but I sure would like to. There is marathon in Victoria that looks really good - run in Oct and along the sea walk. I may need to scenery to take my mind off the pain-haha.

That is it for now. I will try to get to some of your diaries.

Keep fighting the fight!!

Hey, Cowboy :D You have been doing very well I see. It's nice to hear from you again. I think I should get back into doing IF again properly. I always had lots of energy & loved not really having to count calories 5 days a week. You must be so fit now. You are doing your best to try to ensure a nice, healthy & active old age. You can't do much more than that. Cheers, Cate.

Thanks, Cate. It is amazing how much better I feel with IF. I would never have believed it. Plus adding Keto I think helps as well.
