Sparrows Experiment

Swam instead of spin class today. Then did just a few weights, before pulling a muscle in my back. :( I was 130 this morning...but I did run late last night so I don't think I'm keeping it as a true weight. Its probably just a bit of dehydration.

I finally got new shoes. It took my toes visibly poking out of my other ones to get me to do it. I loved my other shoes which were addidas adistars but my new ones are even better: asics GT 2120. They're super comfy and pretty cool looking.

Today is going to be a more challenging tri class starting with spin followed by a long run, followed by core. I can't wait. fun stuff.

my back is still pretty tender, but at least i can take a full breath without it really really hurting. progress

I was doing SLDL's...which shows you I wasn't doing them correctly cause they are supposed to work your hammies and butt! lol. I was talking and being goofy with a few gal friends so I'm sure my form got off. I also was doing 80lbs and thats a fairly new weight for me. I normally do 70.

Tri class was horrible. spinning felt like a chore, my heart rate was up in the 160s like instantly, which NEVER happens. Running was the same way. We did a hill workout for only a half hour and I ran my hills at 8 min pace..but my heart rate was up close to 170 :( I don't feel overtrained or anything. I took the weekend off (pretty much) and only swam yesterday so..well whatever, it was just an off day.

yeah I guess so. maybe I was spinning and running in a way to compensate for it. I actually didn't feel it spinning, did running but could keep going, and I didn't do my core stuff cause that hit it dead on...but you're right.

Triathalon, duh...:D

ok ok don't get snippy mister... :D Are you doing a sprint distance?
Well, sure I have a lot of tips...what kinds are you looking for? ;) Whats your training base been? How prepared are you for each leg going into it? What has your training plan been looking like? Have you practiced in open water? Is it lake, river or ocean? Do you have a road bike? Have you done any "bricks" where you do 2 of the disciplines back to back in a day? Have you practiced eating and drinking while doing activity?

VERY tired today. I set my alarm last night for 5am to get up to coach the rec team.. and I woke up at 8am :( I had accidentally set it for PM. mannnnn. luckily I team coach with a 17 yr old girl...but shes not really supposed to be on deck all alone. Plus there are a TON of kids, I feel really really bad. I rushed off to spin class and was late. It stunk, I couldn't catch my groove at all. I'm not sure whats up with me lately. I feel fat and out of shape. lol. ok I can see the rolling of eyes. Seriously, I just do, I know its mental, but its not a happy feeling. I need TOM (time of the month) to start. Its seriously driving me crazy. I am super PMS. As if you all wanted to know that :( sorry.
I had a b'zillion swim lessons today, so that kinda wiped me out being in the sun and water all day. Its a good little side job though, I'll still be glad when its done.
I am feeling very anxious about all this training to be over. Its hard to train this way and eat squeakly clean, which is what I like because I feel better about myself. This montly garbage is also making me crave all sorts of total crap. Today it was ice cream and spaghetti. I ate too much of both. I have quite a few things to accomplish before I'm freed up from all the hard work. I say this, but I guess the truth is, when I'm not training for something I don't really have direction and I go looking for something to train for. ha. Don't listen to me. I'm the PMS moody indecisive lady for the next few days...
July 14-Sprint triathlon

I have enough rotations around the sun to recognize this statement is supersize bold leters.

ha thats true...in fact, if you can make it across the finish you even get free food ;) For a sprint if you HAVE done some swimming, biking and running and have some decent endurance there is nothing wrong with going out there and giving it your best shot. At least you'll have something to built from :D If you are the easily discouraged type....maybe best to wait till you get some extra training!

What is a sprint? Im buying a bike this week and will begin determining my stamina there. Im not really worried about running, however running after a 16 mile bike ride is a little different.

From my understanding, the swim is the hardest part. I havent really done anything outlandish other then decide I want to do this event. Im not interested in doing well, just completing and learning for the next one.

a sprint is probably what you're doing: 1/2 mile swim, 16 mi bike, 5K run.
The run is a bit harder after a bike ride, but you get your legs back after about a half mile. The swim is hard if you're not really a swimmer. If all you're interested in is finishing then you should be fine! I hope you love them!
My advice is to try doing some bricks: swim then bike, bike then run one right after the other. See how that feels and where you're weak. More advice is to practice in a pool "sighting" do a few strokes of freestyle and then peak your eyes up up briefly to spot something straight ahead (that you've predetermined). Do that over and over continuously and work up to a half mile or more. Its also good to have a default stroke in case you get really tired or panic out there in the open water. click into a few strokes of breast or side stroke to catch your breath, get your barings. On the bike: Drink well on the first 10 miles of that bike and very little to nothing the last 8. That'll save you a side ache on the run. Sit up and gear down the last 1/4 mile to give your legs relief and more air. If you need some energy, take in a gel as your bike is ending.
For the run: If you have rubber legs off the bike I suggest WALKING the first 25 yards. If you try to run it will only make for a longer run because your legs will never recover. Get the lactic acid to subside by walking briefly and then start into a jog. Increase if you can as the run goes on but mostly just try to maintain. Try not to walk much, it will be tempting to never start running again if you do! DO take the water. Take one to drink, one to splash over your head. WALK as you drink that water, you'll hardly lose time and you need the water more than you need the few seconds it lost you.
No matter what, finish strong! The crowd will pull you in. Don't let anyone make you STOP cold after you finish. keep walking to cool down and drink some water. There is a good chance you will want to throw up, just keep walking and drinking.

there is a pile of value in this post. Read it again and again.
