When people say "I want to get toned...but not huge or anything"

Does anybody else think that when people say "I want to get toned...but not huge or anything" it is a little funny. I do not mean laughing at them for saying it, but for most people getting "too big" should not be a concern when starting out.

I find it is usually my female friends who say they want to start lifting weights but do not want to get too big, so they lift a weight that they can do about 20 reps or something. I am in no way meaning to insult people, nobody knows everything and I certainly don't. It is just kind of funny that it is people who are just starting out. When starting out you should want to see as much of an improvement as possible and getting too big is a long way away.

I think with the females that I know it is when they see pictures of women bodybuilders and they think that if they do a routine with 6-8 reps in then they will get huge in a month or two so they decide to stick to a high rep workout which is likely to do nothing for them.

Also I just want to point out this is not an attack on women :) . This is just some that I know who have recently wanted to start getting in shape and just asked for some basic advice on their routine and stated their goals to me but added they don't want to get "too big". The same goes for men too though as getting big enough that you are "too big" is way off for anybody just starting out in the weights room.

P.S I personally prefer a slightly more curvy lady if i'm quite honest :jump1:

Just my thoughts and hope I don't look like I am taking the p*ss out of anybody. It just a common misconception that a lot of people have I think. I mean I don't want to be huge as it wouldn't suit me but right now I am trying to get "as big as I can".

Cheers
Dan

Its really just a simple matter of not being properly educated.....before....making those type of statements, and making certain assumptive conclusions based on certain pics they see, and maybe coupled with being misinformed on certain things they read.

In any event, they will get a wake up call, rather quickly, when they find out that one WILL NOT get like ronald colemen without roids---and YEARS of weight training even WITH roids. Even persons taking roids, work their @ss off, they are just getting illegal biological assistance. The body was not designed in my opinion to be like a ronald coleman, and a natural body builder will not even come close.

Oh man if you actually could get like huge and I mean HUGE in a month or two that'd be sweet.

Yeah, many girls I know who are trying to lose weight are scared about using weights because they don't want to get too muscley. Like Chillen says I think it is just not being educated about the subject and being a little naive about how much work and effort goes into getting a "muscular" body. I can totally understand though because I was in the same boat before I started to work out. My education has changed largely through this site and personal experience. I try to help them out but i i think it just goes in one ear and out the other!

most people who say that are the skinniest people ive ever seen. Which leads me to the conclusion: They tried to gain muscle, but failed miserably, now they want to hide the embarrasment (sp?) by saying they want to "tone"

One too many sets of BiceptZ curls and I have to buy a whole new set of shirts 'coz my arms get so hooooge they rip through my clothes! :yelrotflmao:

Lol, I know what you mean, I have a few people like that in my family. There's this idea that if you work out for a few weeks you'll start to look like Arnie without noticing.
Next time someone says something stupid like that to you tell them to take before and after pics. If they've got huge muscles after a month or two they'll be able to make millions selling workout DVD's!

Man, that's gold :yelrotflmao:

But people would consider that a bit mean.
