exercise before breakfast. Y or N?

i read in some book a while ago that you should never ever exercise first thing in the morning befoer you have eaten anything... he reason being is becuase (i cant go into great detail as i dont remember alot) you havent got enough fuel in yuor body and so your body will start eating into muscle to make glucose to fuel the exercise. and if you dont fuel your body first then the exercise yuo do wil be a pointless wate of time.
apparently 1 gram of muscle makes half a gram of glucose.

since then i have always eaten first (before i read that i used to exercise before breakfast quite alot)

is this a fact????? or is it a load of bul****

i think its fine to like run and stuff before breakfast, but the fact of lifting weights and stuff, i only do that after lunch, as i have food in my body to process

ahh ok. it was only cardio i did before breakfast anyway.. i do weights after my last meal containing carbs in the early evening

Only do walking, running or high intensity cardio causes your heart hate to rise and thats whats bad for you.

Low intensity on an empty stomach burns fat.
High intensity burns carbs and since you dont have any it burns muscle.

That seems contradictory to "Guerilla Cardio" - a short eBook on HIIT someone linked to here.

For
instance, I train with weights on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and
perform my Guerrilla Cardio sessions
on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
mornings, before I eat anything.
(Studies show cardiovascular exer-
cise performed first thing in the morn-
ing, on an empty stomach, burns up
to three times more fat than the same
amount of exercise performed later in
the afternoon!)

Can someone please clear this up?

i dont think his claim is 100% correct although he's right in that you need to eat before doing any "Work" so to speak.

The reason I don't work out before I eat is that I'm freaking hungry in the morning....plus I've found that my activity level is so high that when eating clean I practically have to force feed myself all day or I'll be at a huge deficit. I eat whenever I can.

Intense activity in a fasted state is a NO NO!

Something low-intensity such as a walk or a light jog wouldn't be bad, but anything of a higher intensity will definately put your body into a catabolic spiral! Even when I was doing low-intensity cardio first thing in the AM (training for a show) I still downed a quick protien shake about 15 min. before. If your schedule requires you to work out first thing in the AM or not at all, make sure you eat at least 3 hours before bed time and consume a protien shake with a bananna before you workout. (Both will digest quickly) If you can, make a shake like this about 30-45min beforehand: Whey protien, a banana, 1/2 cup of rolled stovetop oats, ice and soymilk if desired, 1 teaspoon of flax oil. Blend all ingredients in a blender to form a shake and then drink ASAP so you'll have something in your system!

Burns Stored Fat

Actually, If you exercise in the morning before breakfast, you force your body to burn stored fat reserves. If your goal is weight loss, then it's ok.
This is a common techinique for people who want to lose weight.
(Read "Body for Life") by Bill Phillips, CEO of EAS.

If your already lean then I wouldn't do it. You will burn muscle. You could have a protein shake, they take no time at all to drink.

How would you define 'lean' though? For example...I'm not obese, I'm not fat, I'm not chubby - but I'm not like the 300 either. I have somewhere 10-15% bf%
Is it okey for someone like me to do it?

is this guerrilla cardio true because if it is then i might give it a try

I'm giving it a try this (Australian) spring. Which is in 2 months or so.

ya im in same position im 12-14% body fat would it really help me get rid of the extra body fat or am i to low for this to work. im pretty well built all around i do full body workouts and cardio 6 days a week each on seperate days but i have been not losing much weight and i have a deficit diet and i go full out in cardio. so i think i kind of hit a wall and i just want to know if this could be a way to get past that and im looking into doing HIIT too

My problem is that I am at the gym at 6 a.m. on weekdays, so I can't do much else than eat or drink some protein on the way.

Just because it's "common" doesn't make it a good idea (and I would argue that it's a common technique, anyway).

Weight loss isn't based on what is being used for energy, it's total caloric expenditure in the 24-hour period. If what you write had any significance in terms of weight loss, HIIT wouldn't make any sense and wouldn't work. Meanwhile, you're potentially burning half as many calories by performing fasted SS because you don't have enough energy to perform intense work, and if you did you'd risk causing protein degradation and muscle wasting.
