Toned tummy

Crunches do not tone the tummy.

If I had my way I'd give an infraction to everyone who says 'tonned'.
Kidding :D

There is no such thing as tonning.
You can build muscle with resistance training and you can loose fat with diet and exercise.

So do you want to know how to build muscle or how to loose fat?

Oh..crap...so all the crunches i have been doing...are useless? :(

I would like to get a flat tummy....

Crunches are not useless. A strong core is very important. However, they are not contributing to a defined mid-section. Seeing your abs is a function of shedding the subcutaneous fat on your belly which is a function primarily of diet. What is your diet like?

Like I said before, losing fat is more a function of nutriton than anything else. But it is not as simple as eating good foods. More importantly you have to consider energy balance. You have to be in a calorie deficit, that is, eat less calories than you burn each day.

The best place to start is figuring out your maintenance caloric intake. That is, the level of calorie consumption where you are eating the same level of calories as you are buning each day.

There are numerous calculations you can use to find this maintenance level. However, you can just as easily use 14-16 calories per pound of body weight. From there, reduce that number by roughly 15% and start with this small calorie deficit.

if theres a cable machine at the gym/fitness cener/club (whatever its called by your place), you can use weight for your crunches or stability ball crunches, or twist crunches, or whatever.

I think the abdominals are just like the arms and legs. the more muscle built, the more you see it and the flab goes away.

He meant that while your suggestions were helpful, the more important factor for getting "toned" abdominals is diet, rather than the exercise(s) itself. :)

Exactly, if someone comes to you with a fat mid-section and asks how can I make my abdominals show, what is the best advice you can give them Suzan?

a) Here is an 8 minute abs video or some other exercise that will train your abdominals, OR,

b) Let's work out your nutrition so that we can shed some of the fat under the skin to expose the muscles you already have, since we all already have abdominals?

Seriously, which would you give as you recommendation? I think you already answered it by your above post, but maybe we can get you thinking in another direction.

Umm, this is just flat out incorrect. Training a specific area of the body with resistance training does nothing for the subcutaneous fat that is located under the skin, above the muscle.

Eating Well to lose fat

Hi Strout...

I'm new here...can you guide me to a previous post or current of what your recommendations are for a eating plan in losing fat? Also, how much protein are you eating per day...I'm uping my protein and would like an idea...I realize we'd be different but I'm interesting in your meal plans also.

I recommend you reference the beginners thread in R.Lewis's post. As for the protein intake, I take in 1.5g per lb of body weight personally. That does not necessarily mean you should do the same.

I was just forwarded that link... Thanks you! just read it..very informative. Thanks R.Lewis.
