Help needed!

This is it. I've decided my weight has begun to be a massive problem for me and it has to be sorted. I joined the gym recently but still had a lot of stuff going on at work. Now that has finished and i have plenty time to go so tomorrow will be my official start. I've tried looking around several sites but trying to decipher the information on my own is pretty difficult with so much to take in. I'm really putting it out to you to make me programs if I'm being honest. It's not that I don't want to be able to but more that I don't have a clue what I should be doing/looking at.

Now I've aimed to do this for a while but today I've been feeling upbeat about the change it will have on me. I have lost a lot of my confidence over the past 18 months where I have really put on weight, I used to be in great shape and played football and rugby every week. This was ended when I developed shin splints, I would fight through the pain during games and was sometimes left unable to walk the next day even after coming home to ice them immediately after games. Eventually I gave up both rugby and football which has really led to my weight problem.

I really am clueless with what I've meant to be doing when I go though and that's where you come in. Hopefully you can give me programs for training, firstly i want to lose the weight but ideally tone the muscles at the same time. If anyone has any good dieting ideas that would help I'd be greatful too. I'm gonna keep this thread as a diary of my progress and hope it will spur me on. I know I will hit difficult times and thats when I'll look back on it and see what I've achieved so far. This time I AM going to do it.

I have set myself an aim of 182 pounds by 1st July 2007. This may not seem a lot but considering I currently weigh in at 252 I think that may be a step too far. However I am going to give it my best shot. This is the first thing I need feedback on, would this kind of drastic weight loss be possible in this time period? If not then what would be a suitable target for this time?

Thats all I can think of at the moment so I'll wait for some responses on my goals/programs unless I remember something else I've missed out

Cheers

This thread should answer a lot of your questions. A combination of weight training (full body workouts 3x a week) and cardio (5x a week) will help you lose weight. Also, 5-6 small meals a day where your calorie intake is about 500-1000 less than what you need to maintain the weight your at (see the thread I mentioned for details). Good luck with your goals, and congrats on making your decision to be healthier.

Edited to add - a safe weight loss is considered 1 or at most 2 lbs a week. Although losing will be more difficult the closer you get to your target weight.

Hey Alpen,

Seriously, noone will do you any justice writing you some sort of "cookie cut". It sounds like you are at a major health risk state. Do yourself a favor.... get an assessment and perhaps a consultation from one of those bright eyed, overly smiley trainers at your local gym. Make sure the guy or gal knows what the hell he/she is talking about. Here's some basic stuff to help you assess your own situation:

- Burn more calories standing up and working out. So if a NO2 pumped trainer tells you to hit the leg press. He's a moron....fire him. Besides, you need to help yourself stay as functional as possible.

- Learn the basics (squat, pushup, pullup, to a more advance degree deadlifts). These are not just movements in the gym, most likely you perform many of these movements in life. Having troubles with a few. Regress the difficulty a bit.

- Eat right. If you don't do this you probably will be seeing no results. Learn to eat. There are articles here in the forum on this. Also you can go here

- Three keys to this game friend. FREQUENCY, CONSISTENCY, VARIATION. Follow them and you'll get to yuor goals..... screw up and give up.....and you won't

and research

Thanks for the replies so far.

I'm intending on going to the gym 5 times a week. I'm going to be looking around more threads over the next few days and looking at the things I should be doing for what I want. I will be doing cardio everyday and probably weights every 2nd. I've been thinking though, would it be possible to do weights everyday if I were to change the groups of muscles I was working on? e.g Monday - arms and chest, tuesday, legs and back, wednesday - arms and chest etc then switching it the next week?

So today is my official start at the gym. I'm going to have a chat with one of the trainers and see what they recommend for me. Quite looking forward to going actually so hope it goes well

Good luck with your goals. Another way to look at your is not quantitatively, but qualitatively. Even if you don't lose as much as you would like changing your lifestyle is bound to have a huge impact!

It would be possible to train every muscle everyday. The only problem is understanding of anatomy and biomechanics. If you knew more on these two subjects, it would be okay to try and workout everyday. For now, continue researching....and not just from one author or trainer. I think Mike Boyle and Alwyn Cosgrove, and Chuck Wolf summed it up best stating:

If you read an hour a day (about fitness/nutrition) for a year you will know more than most personal trainers. Read from different big time guys and little time guys...even guys you hate, to get a more open perspective and better understanding. If someone tells you how to do it.....you forget. If someone shows you how to do it....you remember. If you involve yourself....you will understand.

Goodluck to you.....stay consistent. Keep us posted.
