Squats trouble

Hey all,
I recently changed my full body workout with the help of your advice, and one aspect I changed was dumbbell squats to barbell squats. I've only had a couple of sessions so far, but I find that when I hold the bar with it resting along the shoulders behind my neck I get very sore at the top of my back/back of neck. It is really weighing down on that area. Am I holding it wrong? Or is this to be expected? It just doesn't feel right.

Thanks in advance.

Brendan.

Try lowering it a bit to the bottom of your traps. You can also try using a foam roll which will ease weight of the bar/plates.

Yeah, I usually use a folded up towel when I do squats because I had that same problem, I'd have a big red line across the top of my shoulder blades after squatting. Now I don't need a towel anymore, I think you just need to kind of get used to the weight on your back and get a feel for where the bar needs to be on your back.

I have a similar issue with the super squat machine (anyone use this? Opinions?) except it's more at the outer ends of my collar bones. I have little bruise lines on my shoulders too. I guess it's just a matter of conditioning the tissue. 500+ pounds on a part of your body not used to bearing any weight will take some getting used to.

just retract your shoulderblades, chest out. the bar shouldnt be on your neck, but your upper back..

and a squat machine? it sounds bad, just do regular BB squats.

it takes a couple weeks for the soreness from the bar to go way. the muscle and skin will 'toughen up' and you'll barely notice it.

and Aju...quit the squat machine...and how are squats making the barbell touch your collarbone?
even front squats, on a smith machine, shouldn't rub the collarbone.

it doesnt engange all the supporting muscles that a free weight lift would do. I do think thatone is better than a smith machine though, but i would still do free weight squats.

bingo. the machine being used cheats you out of all the stabilization needed on freeweight squats. its just a vertical leg press machine. I would make limited use of it in lieu of real front and back squats with a barbell.

Why does the guy in the video drop his head down on each rep? Try to do that with back squats and see how far the weight pushes you into the floor when you fall forward!

Dswithers,

yeah, the dude in that video doesn't have a clue. my calves are bigger than what I can see of his quads.

it looks like a lot of weight, but with the lever action of the machine, its not.

just like, I can toss 300lbs on the leg press all day, but I squat 200.
