When did I get fat?? New Member

Hello! Nice forum. Lots of great people! It seems like lots of young people. Anyone here over 40? Anyway, I grew up skinny, stick skinny, embarrassingly skinny. Always ate what I wanted when I wanted it. In my 20's had kids and gained some weight. My 30's were great. I discovered weight training!! I loved it! I was toned and healthy lookinf for the first time in my life. Then I moved and fell out of the routine. I turned 40 and figured that I was supposed to be old and fat now...and then I watched desparate housewives:p I decided not to settle for this and need to get back in the game. So I am 50 pounds overweight (I think?) I don't know really..I am 5'4" and weigh 182 pounds. I don't even remember my old workout or anyhting. I guess I am looking for some support and guidance as I start this process. Not good with diets would rather just eat healthy. I plan on walking to start. Considering my age, I don't want to over do it. I recently quit smoking. Worried about my heart even tho Doc says OK (about 7 months ago) Any suggestions??

Also there are plenty of 40+ males and females here.. You are never alone. Good luck!

Welcome to the site. I dont think you're 50lbs overweight though. Look up ideal height/weight ratios and see, seems maybe only 30 maybe.

My mom is 49 and god forbid us ever mention she's no longer young. She always watched her food and did excercise and looks much better than 90% of women of her age.

You're never too old to excercise and you're as young as you feel. 40 is the new 30 so there's no reason for you to be feeling old. With the right diet and some excercise you can create a new fantastic shape for the next summer season.

Search this website, there's a lot of information here.

Thanks for the support

Thanks everyone. I start tomorrow morning cutting all the junk out of my diet and walking. I'll keep posting with progress to inspire myself and others:) I want to lose a few then start a weight training program. I will need help with that part. I can't really afford a gym membership right now, so creative weight training at home suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum! woohoo...:D I have found this site so helpful and you learn A LOT!

Glad to have you part of the community, see you around the board :)

Welcome to the forum... To answer your first question, I'm not quite 40 yet but I can sure it from here (couple of months max). I like you want to drop weight and add some muscle - started in May 05 around 344, and am now around 250-255 and still a work in progress. With defined goals and a positive outlook (as well as some determination) you'll make it, and the people on this forum, myself included, are willing to help you get there. Good luck, and try posting a diary so you (and we) can track your progress.

I am 35 and have a similar background of always being skinny and then after 4 kids noticing I was putting on a little weight. I started out with Body for Life. I do all my weight traing at home with a set of dumbells that I got a Sam's Club. I have added some since and have dumbells from 2-50 pounds 5-50 in increments of 5lbs. For cardio I run and do Billy Blanks Tae-Bo. The Body For Life Book was useful as resource for weight training and for eating right. I also took a few principles from the South Beach diet book. Like you I hate the concept of dieting, so I am focusing on eating right: right quantities, the right types of food, and controlling my glycemic index. I am finding after 7 weeks I am starting to eat right spontaneously, I have also lost 8lbs and gained muscle. Good luck to you, this place is a great resource.

I love all the positive vibes here!

Thanks to all for your encouragement. I like the positive focus here and the encouragement from those who are already on the success path. MissyV; nice to hear about your weights at home. That was a big concern for me as far as costs go. Day one!!!

Hey Peanutmouse,

You're doing it right, I quit smoking a way back and found training to be a better solution, it helped keep the extra pounds creeping on and helped keep me calm through the cravings and distracted me when I was bored. Just don't fool yourself, just because you're not 18 anymore doesn't mean you can't be quite active, though walking is a great start. Personally I highly suggest biking eventually as it's fairly easy on the joints and gets your heart rate up. Good luck!

Cynn
