Young and tired

So I'm a 26 year old mother of two kids. My husband and I have decided that when we have children I would become a stay at home mom. Almost five years later and two beautiful babies, I now weigh more then I ever have.

I'm 5'7 and 179lbs and fit in size 14 jeans (that are a bit tight). Before I had my kids I was 140lbs. I still haven't loss my baby weight from my last pregnancy. I don't want to go back to pre prego size, but a nice 150-155lbs would be great. That means I would have to lose 24-29 lbs.

My weight problem hit me when I was eating chocolate cake on my kitchen floor a few days ago. I just opened my fridge, grabbed a fork and started digging in to the whole cake. After a few minutes I started to get depressed. I threw most of the cake away because I knew if I put it back in the fridge I would eat it later.

I live 4 hours away from my family. I visit them a few times a year and the next time I go we'll be taking family pictures. My mom raised my two older sister, younger brother, and me all by herself. She and both my sisters are small and skinny. All three of them are 5'3 and between 110 to 125lbs. Being that I'm taller AND heavier than all of them, that's makes me feel even more left out.

I'm hoping with the support of some people, I can finally have drive to lose some weight before the family picture day June 11.

Things to help lose weight....
1) Drink only water, no more sodas, juice, and tea.
2) Find 20 minutes 6th time a week to exercise.
3) Eat 3 well sized meals and 1 snack a day. No more boredom eating.
4) Reduce my sugar intake
5) STAY AWAY FROM CAKE!!!

It's time to love my body again!

Welcome! I'd say more than one of us here has been through the chocolate cake on the floor stage. It seems like you're off to a good start though. I like your guidelines so far and mine are pretty similar.

Welcome! Unsweetened tea isn't bad. If you're willing to make it right from the tea bags and not add anything I see no need to avoid it.

Welcome!

I echo Butterfly88: Pick the right tea and I see no reason to avoid it. In fact, I'm trying to drink more of it, but I'm a caffeine junkie - black of course!

Have you thought about working part-time? Are your kids in school now?

I must have sugar or honey in my tea, i cannot drink it plan. So that is why I'm not drinking any of my sweet tea (southern style).
As for my kids, My son is 4 and my daughter is 1. My husband and I want to try for another in a year or so. I got a part time job a few months ago...but my husband couldn't handle taking care of the kids by himself so I quit after a few months. It's not like we need the money, my husband has a nice goverment job that pays really well. I'm a stay at home mom because we don't want babysitters raising out kids. We want a strong family home.

DAY 2

So it's been 24 hours into my weight loss plan and it hasn't been that bad. I have eaten pretty healthy yesterday. For breakfast today I had a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios with Silk almond milk and half a banana (Sadie , my 19 month old daughter, had the other half). For lunch I had some spicy shrimp sushi. For dinner I plan on making turkey burgers and steamed broccoli. I haven't had anything to drink but water since yeasterday. I know that drinking water was a really big problem for me, I would go days just drinking soda, juice, tea, and coffee. Now I haven't had any of those for over a day now. My goal is to drink 5-6 bottles of water a day.

Temptation is around every corner. Today when I was out shopping I stopped by the bakery section at the supermarket and saw a mini chocolate fudge cake with hazelnuts. I stopped my cart and looked at it. After a few seconds I thought of this sight and my last rule...5)STAY AWAY FROM CAKE!!!! and that brought a smile to my face as I walked away.

My FI and I have a similar plan, although I'll be working part-time. - 25h/week.
Like you, we think having a strong family home is more important than dual income and I straight up would refuse to reproduce if I had to birth "latch-key" kids!
My FI makes enough that we could probably survive modestly on it, but working part-time (during school hours) was important to me also.
Do you think being home 24/7 has caused your weight gain?
I ask because the main reason having a part-time was so important to me is because I'm afraid I'll end up fat and lazy if I don't leave the house, even though being a SAHM is BUSY it's a different type of busy...
An unstructured one?
I'm not sure, but I notice there are more overweight SAHMs than there are working ones and I'm trying to make sure that doesn't happen to me so I'm probably going to stalk your diary, lol!

Congrats on saying no to cake!

Hi Rhonda & welcome to the forum. Good on you for staying away from the cake :D
Honey Nut Cheerios are very high in sugar I think & it may be better to check out some other cereals. I know there is a lower sugar version of Cheerios because I buy them for the grandkids. Cereals can be a trap as most of them are high in sugar.
I'm glad I don't have a sweet tooth. I'm mostly tempted by savoury foods.
All the best Rhonda. You have found a welcoming & friendly environment here. Cheers, Cate.

The Cheerios were in my cabinet and needed to be gone. I know that they are high in sugar, but it was that or Trix. Lucky for me it was the last bowl and tomorrow I can buy a better kind.

I don't know if I gained the weight because I'm a SAHM, but I will say that I have a problem with boredom eating. When I had my son it started as me eating while I nursed him, then it got to the point where I was eating whenever I was sitting. I needed to eat when I was watching TV. But that is going to stop now. I feel disgusted when I think about myself eating 'just because'.

DAY 3
So far it's still not that bad. Still drinking only water, still having only three meals and one snack a day, I walked a mile today, and my scale said 175.2lbs! That's almost 4 lbs gone ( probably water weight).
This morning I had two hard boiled eggs and a banana. For lunch I had left over Turkey burger from last nights dinner. I'm eating a little snack right now, a rectangle of a gram cracker with unsweetened peanut butter. For dinner I plan on steaming shrimp and having chicken flavored rice with broccoli!

So I have noticed something about my body that might sound nasty but this is my diary and you don't have to read it....well here it is, I'm more regular when it come to bowl movements now. I normally only have 2 or 3 a week. But I went yesterday AND today! All this water and exercise is really making me go...if you know what I mean. The way I look at it is that going to the bathroom can tell you a lot about your body. It can tell you if you're dehydrated, sick, need more fiber, what foods agree with you, and if you've eaten asparagus!

Bought Honey Bunches of Oats with almonds. It has the same nutritional facts as Honey Nut Cheerios but less sugar, 6g instead of 9g. Once I'm done with this box I'll get regular Cheerios and put sliced bananas in it to sweeten it up.

4lbs gone, more regular bowel movements- all good Rhonda! You will get used to making more healthy choices & it may never feel bad. Go you :)

DAY 4
I had cake today. My sister-in-law had a birthday party...so I let myself have a little slice. Still doing good with the diet other then that slip up. My father-in-law has a birthday in less then two weeks, I'll let myself have a slice if I stay strong and lose a little more weight before then.

PS. I wasn't able to work out today.

I don't think you should feel too bad about the cake. If it was a small piece, I doubt you did much damage. Plus, no one likes to be that person at the birthday party who feels like they can't have any cake because they're trying to lose weight.

Letting yourself have a little piece of cake every now & then, is still mindful eating. It's when we justify the little piece of cake on a more regular basis that we get into strife.

DAY 7
So it's been one week since I have started this weight loss journey. Today I was able to walk/run 1.25. After that was done I remembered that I needed to mow our yard. It took 30 ish minutes to do my yard and it was hard because it's not flat, it slopes. Once my husband got home and we had dinner, he wanted to go on a walk. So we went on a mile long walk.
Today was a very busy day for me. Right now I'm in bed and really don't want to get up and weigh myself. It's time to get a good nights sleep and weigh in tomorrow.
PS. I had a glass of sweet tea with my dinner...I needed something other then water after all the exercise i did today.

Sounds like a good day to me Rhonda :) You weigh at night? I would never weigh at night. I can be 2kg more at night than the morning!

Out of curiousity, how many calories are in sweet tea? I ask because I genuinely though tea (sweet or otherwise) wasn't that bad? Even when I make tea at home I put in a touch of honey!

Cate, I don't step on the scale at night either. I do it in the morning right before I eat my breakfast.

La Dauphine, it's 90 calories per glass of sweet tea. I have been drinking water because I have been counting my calories everyday. I try and keep my count between 1800-2000 everyday. So if I drink sweet tea, then that's 90 less calories I have for food.

DAY 8
So I started at 179lbs (80.7kg).
Weighed myself this morning and I was 173.2 (78.5kg). So I'm down 5.8lbs (2.6kg).

I have been doing pretty good with all my rules set for myself so far. I know I have cheated twice by having cake a few days ago and tea last night with dinner. If that is all I have some wrong, then I'm still on the right track. I also know that the first few pounds are the easiest to lose and that it's going to be a little harder for me from this point out. I had a great start so far!
