Day One:

Until Now...
Today is the first day of my weight loss journey.
At my heaviest I weighed 85kg, however last year I managed to get down to 55kg. I had never been that light before, and the way I felt was indescribable. Not only was I more confident, but I had more energy and my overall attitude was very positive. Over the last year however, after some major life catastrophes and disasters, I gained a lot of that weight back: I currently weigh 69kg.

I didn't notice the weight gain at first because the rest of my life was in tatters, but over the last few weeks I have definitely noticed a change. Not only do I lack confidence, but I also feel sluggish, tired and extremely unmotivated. I find I am depressed a lot and struggle to deal with stress.

When I lost weight the first time around I didn't actually notice I was losing weight until one day when I just woke up and was 55kg. It was really strange, especially because I had just given up on trying to lose weight and focused on trying to be healthier. I was eating smaller portion sizes, avoiding "white" food (bread, rice, pasta), danced a LOT and also did some at-home resistance training maybe twice a week.

I have decided to join this forum and keep an online diary to establish some kind of accountability. If I have to write an entry every day on what I did, what I ate, and how I am feeling, I believe I will be more likely to maintain healthy habits and stick to my plans.

My Plan:
I do not want to make temporary changes, but life-long changes. I see no point in losing weight just to gain it back, the feeling is horrible and mortifying. My current plan to achieve my weight loss goal is:
  • Drink more water: I have never been able to drink enough water
  • Exercise every day: I live near the beach, so going for a beach walk every morning and evening is very pleasant. I also really enjoy dance, and have a rebounder (mini-trampoline) which can be very fun.
  • In-home resistance training: 3 times a week. The thing about this that I like is that despite not seeing dramatic physical changes in the first few weeks while trying to lose weight, my strength does improve. It is very satisfying seeing that my reps are increasing.
  • Portion control: not only controlling portions but frequency of meals. I don't want to comfort or boredom eat.
  • Keep calorie intake low: especially calories from complex carbohydrates, which seem to be the devil when it comes to my personal weight gain. I also consume a LOT of calories from drinking wine (spoiler alert- I have a drinking problem).
  • Tell all of my friends that I'm trying to lose weight. They can be a pretty bad influence sometimes, but if they know what I am trying to achieve they will do what they can to encourage me.
  • Keep an online diary: every day I will add to this diary, including what I ate, what I did in terms of exercise, and how I've been feeling. I will also write down weekly goals to help keep me focused.
  • Weekly weigh-ins: which will be added to this diary.

Goals for the Next 7 Days:

  • Over the next 7 days I would like to lose 1kg.
  • I will go for a 2.5km walk every morning.
  • I will perform one other type of exercise a day.
  • I will drink 2L of water every day.
  • I will stop drinking wine (heaven help me).

Hi, Yena & welcome to the forum. What a wonderful, wonderful plan. Is the stop drinking wine just for the first week? I find that the hardest thing. I love wine. I have cut it right down, but just don't have the will (or really want) to stop drinking it altogether. Instead, I have self-imposed limits. Cutting it out altogether will sure help with your plan. Glad to have you with us :)

Welcome :)

You sound very passionate about your plan and it is ambitious yet seems achievable due to your dedication!
A week without booze is a good start, but don't worry if you can't completely manage it the first time. I too had a bit of a drinking problem, and found cutting down gradually much easier than stopping altogether in the long run. I narrowed it down to 3 days a week, then 2, and after the first few weeks I had completely stopped drinking in the house, and now I only drink once per week at a local pub! Cutting down means you can't handle as many drinks as you used to, so it really helps!

Walking on a beach in the morning sounds lovely and therapeutic, as well as healthy! Don't worry if it takes a little longer than 7 days to achieve your goal, as you mentioned, lifestyle choices are for life. And any improvement you make over the next week is a good start to a healthy life!

Good luck :)
