Sheesh... where to start. For the first 25 years or so of my life I could eat when, where, how much and what kind food I wanted and would not/could not gain a freakin' ounce. Nowadays, well, for the past 8 years or so, that's not that case.
Back in the day, when I was all about weight training and cardio, I would eat around 8k calories... from Spaghetti O's to veggies, weight gainer shakes to marathon fast food sessions. And I could not for the life of me make it over the 180lbs mark. It frustrated the hell out of me, as I wanted to be 200!!
Then: (here we go) I got married (queue dramatic soap opera music).
This story sound familiar to anyone? I've spoken to many people that tell me the same thing: "Oh ya, dude, once I got married I gained the weight uber fast" or "ya, got comfortable in my life and slowed down, just inviting the lbs in" among other things.
I've fluctuated in weight after I married (I quickly gained, hmmm, about 35-40 lbs in about 2 years or less in the two initial years of marriage - that's 180 lbs all the way up to about 215-220) and haven't been able to get the dang stuff off me, no matter what I tried...
...that is.... until... NOW!
So I broke down and bought an elliptical machine about 3 weeks ago. It's fun, doesn't kill my joints and isn't too difficult in execution - well, no exercise is difficult when done to ones own level - so in difficult I guess I mean like trying a 60 minute Tae Bo DVD for the first time.
I had been going for an average of 30-45 minutes per day... then it kinda wavered. Not sure why... working late, kids, etc, etc.
But then I had a revelation! I've been a pro wrestling fan for almost 30 years... and I just bought the WrestleMania 1-21 DVD package. With over 80 hours of matches I made it a part of my goal! So starting from WrestleMania 1, I watch an hour of each WM each evening while I exercise on my "ellie", 5 evenings per week, until I get through WM21.
I want to keep a log of (a) my weight loss , (b) my progress of feeling healthy and (c) my nostalgic musings about WrestleMania - what I remember from watching them back in the day, and my favorite moments.
I've been exercising for 3 weeks now and am down from 215 to 206. I started the WrestleMania thing on Friday, and I'm just now chewing on WrestleMania 2.
This is my plan for weight loss/health gain success:
1) Elliptical 60 minutes per day
2) Eat as healthy as possible... not being obsessed about eating properly so much as eating less... and healthy as possible, when possible. I'm not going granola hippy with my eating habits, just eating less and a little better
3) Drink ~1 gallon of water per day
4) Cut out soda (Diet is OK once in a while)
So let's begin now:
WrestleMania 1 (whole enchilada): Highlight matches were Andre/Studd and the main event w/ Hogan and Mr. T. Mr. T sucked, Hogan was, as always, great and Roddy Piper/Mr. Wonderful are two of the greatest bad guys ever in the history of Wrestling. Too bad Piper went face waaaay to early and was wasted potential. Overall, great for nostalgia, but the matches plodded. But hey, I still loved every second!
Elliptical is getting easier every day - 100 rotations per difficulty level, at 10 levels total. 1 through 10, the back down to 1 = 2000+ rotations total. Whew - I stink and sweat like a meatloaf, but it feels freakin' awesome!
Damn! I ate 2 hamburgers from Jack In The Box... tasted awesome, but I felt guilty/bad afterwards. But hey, this isn't about perfection, it's about getting to the goal, regardless of simple setbacks, right? I'll rotate an extra hundred for those burgers
