WTF? 5 pound gain

Okay, I just read through the stickie, "The Scale Mentality" and it makes a lot of sense. But, (and I apologize in advance) I still need some reassurance.

I lost 15 pounds in 8 weeks, waited 2 weeks to weigh myself again, and when I did I had gained 5 pounds! I weighed myself 2 days later (today) and the 5 pounds is still there.
Over the past 2 weeks, I have eaten more than usual on the weekends, (due to some parties, being out of town, etc.) BUT I have continued with my usual diet during the week and kept up on my workouts, (swimming laps.)
At the very worst, I think I would have maintained my weight and not seen a loss because of the bad weekends, but I certainly have not eaten enough to gain 5 pounds!!
I would have thought it would have disappeared after a couple days so I am shocked that it hasn't.

Is that normal? Has anyone seen this happen to them before?
Also, could the swimming have anything to do with it?

I have seen the scale go up 2 pounds before, (related to my cycle) but never 5 pounds
I know I should let it go but it's still really painful and discouraging to me, simply because that recent 5 pounds took awhile to lose.

Any shared stories or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I know its hard to see the scale go up... but besides being angry at the scale how do you feel overall? Are you energized and feeling healthy? Or feeling not so great. I would try to go with how you feel rather than that dang number!

Don't get discouraged and keep your chin up. Just continue with what you are doing and the results will come.

that has happend to me as well. and it also happened after i spent a long weekend with my boyfriend at the cottage. after 3 days of totally ignoring my calorie restrictions, i had gained 5 pounds. i think a lot of it had to do with water weight because i lost 3 of the pounds in the following couple of days (must have been eating a lot saltier than usual) but then 2 stuck around and i've been working on them ever since :( i didnt think i went over my calorie restrictions enough to gain 2 pounds so i cant explain it?

Something to think about...

How long have you been doing your workouts of swimming laps? What is the level of intensity for those workouts?

If you increased your calorie intake over the weekends then it could likely be a water weight type of thing.

The first thing I thought about though when I read your post was that you might be putting on some lean muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat and so if you took in more calories and had the weekend of rest, then that is very likely to happen.

Either way, keep doing what you have been as it was working before and look into changing up the workout type using the FIT principle (Frequency, Intensity, Time).

Good luck!
