would swiming help burning fat ?

Hi Guys ,
I am trying to cut down on food and loose some fats ,I am 18 stone and are overweighed by 1 or 2 stone. the question is would swimming help burning fat ?
I am currently doing a breaststroke every day for 1 hour at least .I don’t take it very hard nor easy so I am somehow doing normal swimming .
Would this help burning fat at all? Is that same as doing cardio where I lost 1 stone in 3 weeks ?
i am looking to get rid of my belly what is the best technique to do ?
Many tnx

Swimming is a great way to burn calories and get into shape. Its no impact, and because of the restricted breathing it is great cardio as well. Get some goggles if you dont have them already and concentrate on the breathing and it will probably work wonders for you.

I think a better question would be why do you question if swimming is effective in helping with fat loss? Why wouldn't it be? This might help uncover some misconceptions you have with regards to the foundational concepts - like energy balance.

ive never seen a fat swimmer
Really???

There you go buddy, I take the kids swimming quite a lot and trust me, people who swim are generally fat asses and 5 year old kids. If ever I need to feel better about my appearance I just take my kids to the pool :)

As for swimming, there's an arguement that as the water keeps your temperature down while in the pool and therefore it has fewer calorie burning benefits than other forms of cardio like running. Also, the elevated body temp with non-water related cardio reduces appetite after training but with swimming people often leave the pool starving hungry and then go eat too much.

I don't really know about the accuracy of either of those principles, just repeating some claims I've heard made about swimming for weight loss, but I think the part about hunger is true. I have to force myself to eat after weight training, can't stand the thought of eating after running, but could easily eat a KFC family bucket after taking the kids swimming

i think swimming would be quite good but it depends on the intensity. If you go too hard then you will starting using glucose for respiration but at low intensity the body can burn fat as a fuel. But the intensity has to be quiet low, like base training low.

But if you deplete your glycogen stores then your body will continue to burn calories and lose fat long after training has stopped as it replenishes them.
It's training at low intensity that keeps all those human hamsters fat as their increased rate of calorie expenditure stops as soon as they step off the treadmill

Unless you plan on swimming for 24 hours then low intensity exercise can't compete with high intensity because the body can still be at an elevated level of calorie expenditure for a day after strenuous exercise.

BF tests on athletes show that those who take part in explosive events like sprinting have lower BF than the long distance people like marathon runners.
It also rings true in the gym, the fattest people are always those on the treadmills, even once they've been there a year they'll still be fat because they've bought into the myth of slow and steady cardio helping you drop fat.
If they were to get that fat ass under a BB and squat their body weight they'd be dropping fat by the bucket load in no time as the increased calories required for muscle recovery, rebuilding and maintenance will help increase their BMR so they'll still be burning calories in their sleep. High intensity = high calorie burn, low intensity = cardio vascular benefits but not much calorie expenditure

Meanwhile, Mr Wobble, the treadmill hamster, is still plodding along in 'light sweat' mode for another 45 minutes on the treadmill before doing a few light widths of the pool just like he has every Friday for the last 5 years

There is a difference between a swimmer and a person that is swimming

I know, I posted the picture as a joke; of course you don't see fat pro swimmers as they wouldn't be able to move as fast or be agile enough if they were overweight.

But go to your local pool and see the average recreational swimmer that tends to swim at a low intensity for many laps and you'll see more rolls of fat than Oprah's masseuse and that's what we're dealing with here, not the elite, but Joe the plumber trying to get in shape. The average swimmer tends to be a lot podgier than the guy in the squash courts so maybe it's more than coincidence

And I have nothing really against swimming for fat loss, I just threw out a couple of theories as to why it might not be the best type of exercise for fat loss but clearly said that I didn't know much about those theories or their credibility - it was just food for thought.

I think swimming is a great way to get in shape. Sometimes if I don't feel like doing the treadmill or eliptical you'll catch me doing laps in the pool pushing it hard and getting that heart rate going.

Yes! It would really help you burn fat. Swimming is one of the best sports that have a lot of benefits to our body. One benefits of swimming is to burn fat, because when you swim all the muscle of the body will move and exercise. By that it burn fat slowly but surely. So my advice is that continue swimming, it’s good to your body.
