Hmm, I would assume it's better to do it all in one work out. Push ups and stuff you can do anytime though. What are your goals?

Oh yea well its not to bad then. Maybe you should do some swimming have you seen the bodies they get? probably what your looking for.

1) If you don't want to get hunch-backed and have shoulder, pec and triceps tendom problems, assure you get ATLEAST as much pulling as pushing exercises. Or with other words, train ATLEAST as much of your upper back as your chest. So for every push-up you should do atleast one row, pull-up, chinup or whatever. Also, try to get ATLEAST half of your upper back work from horizontal rowing (examples: pulls (deadlifts, snatch pulls, clean pulls, high pulls. They're static horizontal upper back work, and best exercises for upper back development), dumbell row, barbell bent over row, seated cable row), as you're a beginner.

2) For appearance, you should also have some core work. I like the serratus crunch very much. That coupled with basic weighed crunches and you don't need anything more. Also do some work for your lower back, again to not get any health problems. Something like back raises for example.

3) If you don't want to look totally silly, you should train your legs too. Don't worry, they won't grow too big, and with good leg work you can drastically increase your performance on sports, if you're doing any. And for a newbie, I would strongly recommend unilateral leg work (e.g. lunges, 1-legged squats).

Now, if you take any of my advice, you'll notice that you can't be hitting everything so many times a week. I would go as far as to say that you should drop one day out as I suppose you're a total beginner. Then you could do something like every other training day an upper body day and every other day a lower body day (legs and core). That way you can train intensely enough, as you'll get enough recovery.

Hope I was of any help, and good luck with your goals,

vp

Yes, swimming is a very good cardio exercise, but you have to push yourself. A common misconception in swimming is that in order to swim hard, they have to kick and stroke as fast and as hard as possible. That's not true and not only will your arms get really tired really fast, you will lose breath and speed. When you're swimming, you have a lot of time to think to yourself. Just concentrate on using your core and pretty soon you'll be pacin yourself at speeds that you were "sprinting" at before. I used to swim a helluvalot and was in various swimming organizations. Then I quit and was out of the water for quite a while. When I got back in, I was suprised at how ****ty I was doing, until I started thinking about my swimming technique and what I was doing wrong. In the end, I was doing pretty damn well for someone who's been "out of it" for months at a time...I could even keep pace with the regular swimmers, although I am not aware how hard they were trying.

Not that I am accusing anyone, just pointing out something about swimming that people should know.

Hahaha, I totally took this thread off course. But the point is, swimming is great but do it right!

Yeah defimately do it right I swim for aquahawks and surf lifesave. You really gotta have the right technique but even the not so great technique will improve with a bit of practice.
