Wieght training and martial arts

How do you guys work both into your schedule? My standings now aren't very good. I haven't worked the bag or my forms and techniques in a month+. I just can't seem to fit it into my schedule...For instance, bag, punching, and form work on upper body days is basically out of the question. The next day I'm still sore, and the day after that, I'll hit the weights again. lol, and I'll be damned if I do any kicking after leg days...

So, really, how do you guys handle your schedules?
 
getting the right mix of martial arts and weight training can be really tricky

i had the same problem earlier

since i am reviving my fitness level; it has been mostly bodyweight exercises
so recovery for me is faster as of now and i train more often.

in my opinion you could reduce your workout days to two sessions

work on your muscle recovery so you concentrate more on martial arts-you could help with some supply of antioxidants ; vitamins, green tea etc

reducing your workout time using more of compound exercises

Lei, actually punching your bag might be good for some active recovery post-workout. I have found that level to go to where it doesn't leave me not wanting to move around that next day. Unlike some trainees, I don't really like soreness or anything that inhibits my mobility. Also, you'll notice the longer you train (months/years wise) the more your work capacity will improve and the less you will be sore.

So, it's really all about prorities. Do you want MA more or weight training? One has to give over the other (though not to the seclusion of the other). I am now trying and give myself 36-48 hours between lifting and any athletic endeavor I want to do well at because I know my performance will suffer if I don't. For example, I throw on Tues and have MMA and throw on Sat. So, I have split up my routine to a Sunday, Weds, Thurs lifting scheme. Somedays Hapkido will fall on Tues (when I have time to go) but I'm still unhampered by my schedule.

Your other choice....suck it up. :)
 
This works for me

Since it is tough to do suplemental training while training MMA, BJJ etc.., I do simple maintanence stuff 2-3x per week. Low rep mod intensity Squats, DL's, Weighted pull ups, BP, and lots of joint mobility. This type of thing keeps me strong while not overtraining. Sometimes I cycle some kettelbell grinds in as well: Turkish getups, windmills, presses, guard attacks, and things of that nature.

I find that the two are often in constant conflict. Oh, well. all my favorite fighters beleive in weight training. Even bruce lee. It is an urban myth that the man never lifted. The dude was said to spend much of his time in front of the tv lifting a single dumbell. if you wnt to his house that was probably where he was.

I have a very full workout schedule squeezeing both in. durring the summer I definatly increase my martial arts (cardio) at the expense of my lifting but I generally lift first then do shadow boxing or bag work or a kick workout every few days. it is great cardio.
I also train alot of freinds so I do a light 20 min workout in the middle of a lot of days that emphsizes martial arts and I do three minute workouts after I wake and before I go to bed which gives me the energy I need for all of it.
It comes out to

Day one: Chest Day *
Day two: Iron leg day (weights)
Day three: Back day (arm bike)*
Day four: rest
Day five: Shoulders + boxing
Day Six: Kick workout
Day Seven: Arms + boxing
Day eight: rest

* run to and from the gym
I stray if something feels too sore. This is what seems to be the best balance for me but I still struggle to keep all my muscle on me. My little workouts don't seem to affect the big ones except to give me more energy.

I'm ususually not incredibly sore, but I don't want to be damaging anything while recovering. For instance, I am a big fan of a punching drill in which one is to punch the flame out of a candle. This drill never fails to get to assault my lats and some areas of my biceps, from the constant, repetitive punching.

Guys, you're dead on with the priorities. I admit, mine haven't been in order (nor have the been properly executed) for a large part of these last few months. The problem I have with the two workouts a day thing is, I've tried it, and it didn't provide good results. However, I believe those instances were when I worked until failure earlier in the day...

Four day a week weight workouts are definately an option. Hahahaha, nah, I'm not too into the superman, gung-ho thing anymore. Atleast not when I am on my own time. It never ends well. Like I said about the lats and punching, it's similar to hams and high kicking. Gotta do this smart, don't wanna **** myself up for the future...any more than I already have. Heh.

lol i was a fan of that too

Lei tell me, did you manage to blow off the candle
i use to try it for about 15 minutes as often as i could
once i got so frustrated with the whole drill i gave a flurry of punches; just when i thought the flame had gone off, i stopped only to find the flame still burning :D

it difficult to do it since the flame gets max effect only when the arms are fully extended (causing over-extension)
 
I usually manage to put my flames out, unless I find myself trying to punch out the gas stove, LOL. But, it depends on the size of the flame. There's this one candle I use that burns the wax really fast, while the wick grows and grows, resulting in a monstrous flame, hahahahaha.

Fully extended arms, Benny? Lol, shouldn't that be how all your punches are?

yeah! you are right but what i trying to say is that it causes your elbows to lock out

look im not sure but i guess locking out is damaging to the joints
anyway i rarely lockout when punching the empty air

you make me want to try that drill again
long time since i tried that!!!

Are you talking about letting the elbow go, or flexing the bicep/tricep before your elbow overextends?

I hope it's not that bad :( lolol

I'm not taking any class regularly, so I train whenever I want...so the two never really get in the way.

If I were you I'd be working full body routines and working compound excercises like benchpress, power cleans, clean and jerks, deadlifts, squats, pull ups, etc.

i just do martial arts on the day im not hitting the weights.
until now its been weights on monday, wendsday and friday and jujitsu on tuesday and thursday. but now they moved the tuesday practice to monday.. so i might have to change my weight lifting routine.. if i do both on monday it will be weights after school and jujitsu in the evening.. anyone here do weights and martial arts on the same day? is it hard?:p
 
Karky your technical training or jujitsu should precede your weight training
reason the fatigue caused from weights could effect your form and technique
i would put the weight training at the end of the martial arts routine

iv heard people who do weight training and martial arts on the same day however it takes a lot of time and conditioning :)
 
weight training after martial arts.. i cant do that:p martial arts lesson ends to late:p
besides, the jujitsu is mostly cardio for me.. and ive always been told to do cardio after weights.. i could however change stuff up so i dont have to do jujitsu and weights on the same day
 
well im not sure in your case but i have always read it as weight training after martial arts or atleast seperated from each other like martial arts morning and evening weights and that has worked well for me

if your case works well for you then carry on

see what suits you well:)
 
yeah i guess i have to change weight training days to Sunday, Tuesday and Friday. gotta work out on a sunday though.. which can get bad if ive been out partying on saturday:p
 
Weight training in the morning & martial arts in the evening.Save legs for the last day of training cycle for max recovery time.
