Why isn't it working?!

Just looking for anyone who may be able to give me some insight as to why my workout routine doesn't seem to be working!

I joined a gym 2 months ago in order to lose some weight (at least 20 lbs). I've been going a minimum of 4 days a week, sometimes 5, for at least 1.5 to 2.5 hours a night. I do lots of cardio and kick my ass! My schedule usually goes as follows.
Monday: 45 minutes of Kickboxing, 45 minutes of Free Weight Aerobics, 45 minutes of Zumba
Tuesday: 60 minutes of Step Aerobics, 30 minutes of weight lifting
Wednesday: 45 minutes of Zumba, 45 minutes of Pilates (Sometimes Off)
Thursday: 60 minutes of Step Aerobics, 30 minutes of weight lifting
Friday: Off
Saturday: 45 minutes of Zumba, 45 minutes of Weight Lifting (Sometimes treadmill or elliptical as well)
Sunday: Off

I don't eat unhealthy...I'm sure I don't eat as healthy as I possibly could, but I avoid foods such as bread and pasta, I don't eat sweets and things of the sort...

Anyway, my question is...I have been doing this for 2 months, and I haven't lost any weight!! And I don't think I look any different at all.... Anybody have any suggestions on why I'm not seeing results? I figured by kicking my ass as much as I have been, that I would have lost a little weight by now!

Any suggestions?????

24 y.o. female around 5'8 170 lbs

I'm a vegetarian, so I eat lots of veggies...green beans, cabbage, lots of soy protein, salads, eggs. Again, I don't eat bread or pasta, no chips or snack food- anything like that, no soda. I do eat some cheese, which I guess I could cut out, since it's pretty fattening...

Really the only time I've ever been able to lose weight, I have to be EXTREMELY strict with my diet. Pretty much only salads, and then I lose weight slowly, but I'm miserable the whole time, and I always end up right back at the weight Im currently at...my body pretty much just stays here!

You can't cut out carbs completely, its terrible on your mind and body, plus after a little while you won't have any energy. Make sure you space your meals out 4-6 a day. Eat moderation. Small meals, every 3-4 hours or so. Keep up your cardio routine and think positive. If you stress it only gets worse. Definitly keep up your good work. I'd die of spantaneous combustion in that much cardio. lol:p

Ha thanks for the advice! Believe me, I do feel like I'm going to die! I kick my ass, thats for sure... but I'll just keep it up and see what happens :)

no problem.

I forgot to mention to stay away from processed foods,
like granola bars Nutragrain bars. Things that seem good but are processed. If you like to snak on them, make your own. They are much better for you ontop of being able to make them exactly how you want them.

Yeah I do try to avoid those things... I slip occasionally, and that's what I mean by having to be extremely extremely strict with my diet in order to lose weight. It pretty much has to only be vegetables and soy protein, and then I see results...which is I'm sure a healthy way to be, but it gets soooo boring after a while lol.

Wilhelms' right.

Also- is there any chance you can post what you eat on a typical day? Morning til the time you go to sleep? And do you know how many calories you are taking in a day?

I agree.. that's an awful lot of cardio in one day. I would think that 30-50 min a day is enough.

I can post what I've eaten so far today...it's almost 4:30. So far I've eaten 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast, 1 piece of Vegetarian Italian Sausage, Sauerkraut, and 1 small baked potato with salsa. And that's it for now...I'm going to the gym from 5:45 until 8 and I prob. won't eat again. I'm never really hungry anyway, except for in the morning.

cheese is not fattening. excess calories are fattening. I make SURE I eat some cheese daily to make sure I'm eating enough fat.

too little fat is no good.

So that's all you've eaten since this morning?? How many times do you eat in a day?

I usually eat just little throughout the day...I dont really sit down and have like actual meals, which maybe I should do. But i eat probably 3 times, I'd say.

Hi, Maybe you should go to see a nutrition specialist, since you are doing a lot of cardio and apparently you are not eating enough carbs to give your body enough energy to compensate all the effort. I had a similar problem and my body started consuming muscle and saving fat.

Really? Wow, that doesn't sound good at all... Thanks for the info! So, do you think I should eat more carbs then? I mean I can't really eat bread or pasta because seriously as soon as I do, I pretty much start gaining weight around my midsection immediately. I could up the amount of carbs I get from fruits and veggies though...

If I were you I'd shoot for 6 small meals a day. Each consisting of a protein, carb and unsaturated fat. It will keep your metabolism high and steady. Choose things like eggs, whole wheat bread, oatmeal, nuts, skim milk, edenami, quinoa, lots of veggies and fruits. Stay away from processed foods, anything white like sugar or flour, saturated or hydrogenated foods. Try to eat each group every 2-2.5 hours.

lots of good diet information here.. but generally speaking if she wasnt getting enough carbs etc. her body would use the stored energy (fat) to compensate right? resulting in AT LEAST some weight loss by now?

-curious

See thats what I thought too...I thought the only time the body broke down muscle to use was when there was no more fat to draw from? Maybe I'm wrong, but I figured I would have seen SOME weight loss by now! I'm going to follow a pretty strict diet for at least a week and see if that effects anything. Still, I figured with as much cardio as I'm doing I would have lost at least a pound or 2 in the 2 MONTHS i've been doing it lol. Anyway, thanks for all the info everybody!

Not necessarily, if your body feels deprived it will store ever bit of fat it can get, which in turn makes you lose no weight and may make you add.

I suppose thats true...A good friend of mine is really into body building and fitness and he said that when you start a new workout routine, especially if you're not used to working out at all, your body goes into a "shock" at the calories which are now being used instead of stored... In order to survive, it automatically starts trying to store a lot of the calories you eat as fat, to prepare the body in case you need it. He said a lot of times you won't see results right away because of this, however, once your body realizes that you are still going to regularly get a good amount of calories to compensate for the energy spent, you will start burning fat. I don't know if there's any truth in this, but it sounds like it could be true. ha I was still under the impression that I would have seen SOMETHING by now though! I have never really had any luck losing weight through exercise, although I've never stuck with it as regularly and as intensely as I have now...

correct. excess muscle mass is not an evolutionary advantage. staying alive is. so if you eat too few calories, regardless of your macro nutrient intake, the body will do everything it can to store fat. muscle will be cannibalized for energy.

I think the average coma patient receives 1600 calories by IV, and they can't move a finger, let alone walk/run/lift weights.
