Well, yeah, hey. I guess I'd like to start off just saying hi, and telling a little bit about me.

No doubt about it, I'm probably one of the youngest members here, being 13 and all. I have struggled with my weight since I was about 3. Yes, 3. I know, right? It all started after I had a seizure at 2, and then my metabolism was all messed up. It eventually restored itself, and unfortunately, my body didn't. Being obese very young, I quickly just came to an instinct, that being active was tiring, so I did nothing. I remember being 105lbs at 5. I always knew I was fat, and I always wished I was skinny. You may ask, where are the parents in this? Well, they aren't. They don't care about me being 230lbs at 13. Now that I am 13, I've came to the harsh realization that they aren't going to help me..at all. But being serious, I'm old enough to start taking serious matters, you know, seriously. I do enjoy exercising for the most part, other then my breathing, and my foot hurting. One of my goals is to be able to run the mile at the end of the year without stopping. One, that I know how to reach, but I just can't get myself started. I'm 100% willing to sell some of my stuff to make some money for my own scale, my own food, because basically everything in my cabinet right now is full of junk. I guess a little later on today I'll post a pic of me, but I actually don't look THAT fat in it, even though I see myself as grotesque - I mean, how could I let myself reach 230lbs anyways? Anyways, that's me. Oh, and did I mention my name is Ben?

PS - Tips on how to get started are fully appreciated.

Hi there Ben and welcome to the forums.

First off I'd like to say that good on you for taking this matter into your own hands now. Being responsible about this at your age will be hard but you can do it.

A good place to start on the boards is making a journal in the journal/dairy section. This will allow you to post your exercise for the day along with what you've been eating. Not only does doing this repeatedly make you see what you're eating it allows us to watch and make comments that can help you.

Even if you think they won't listen I'd suggest trying to talk to your parents. Tell them you feel like you need their support to do this.

Depending on what exactly is in your fridge and cupboards you can make good choices with the food you have.

Hi Ben, I too was heavy since about the age of 3 and it has been a battle. But i have to tell you, Your willingness to take responsibility for your health is such a great thing to see. You are a mature 13year old, that is for sure. There are lots of people here willing to give you sound advice and unconditional support so you have come to the right place. I agree with ladyumbra that you should try to talk to your parents. They may not realize how to support you, but Ben, you are very articulate and Im sure you can help them understand.

Thanks for the replies. Now, in both posts, I was referred to "talking to my parents." It is something that yes, I should do, but something that I cannot do. I've talked to them, or atleast tried to, countless times. Thanks for the support to the both of you. All is appreciated, and is one step closer to overall good health. Thanks.

Hi Ben, Just thought i would pop in and see how everything is going for you. Its such a shame that you don't have the support of your parents. I know you will find that support here though. Hope all is well

I'm doing okay, but I really want to start exercising more. I've lost another 2lbs, and almost out of the 230s. I'm still not eating the healthiest, but I've saved up some money, and im going to walk down to the grocery store tomorrow. Thanks for the support, it's always welcomed. :)

Good job so far!

I have to agree with the others and say it's extremely responsible and mature for you to take charge like this. Even though you don't have your parents support, I know you're going to find a lot on here. :)

Keep up the good work! You can do it. :)
