Why am I not losing any weight?

Hi all
I try to swim everyday, if not 5 times a week. I pretty much skip for few minutes as well.

It's been about 3 weeks, but perhaps not even 1 kg off?
That is pretty much because the way I eat?

Here are some questions I would like to ask:
If there are no fats in soft drinks and juice, then what is it I need to watch out on the ingredients information? Is it carbs and sugars?

How about rich crackers? there ain't any much fat at all.. so is it carbs that is also important compared to fat?

Thanks in advance

Wayne

Personally I'd say get rid of all soft drinks and juice to start with.. both nasties. Make sure you are having enough protein, especially with all that exercise, to help your muscles do their thing.

The only time I lose weight and keep it off is when I restrict carbs, cut out sugars and watch the fats.

Oh and drinking at least 3 litres of water a day is a great way to flush toxins out of the bod (the icky things your fat cells hold on to) which helps in losing weight and staving off hunger.

Good luck with it Wayne :)

Carbs will kill the results. Rememeber, all in moderation. I would stop drinking juices and try to go with only water and tea for about 8 weeks. Also, make sure to read more info on what kind of carbs and in what amounts are good for you, the same goes for fats.
One more thing - swimming is great for toning your body, but, unfortunately, not enough for weight loss. I would say you need consistant and solid cardio work out 4-5 times a week. You can swim in addition to cardio, of course, but if your goal is to loose weight - cardio is your friend, not swimming. I know some people will tell you that any kind of exercise is good, but the truth is you can achive better results with cardio. I have started in March of this year at 235Lb and proud to say that as of today I am 167.5 lb. :)

when you say cardio.. is it those exercise machines in workout gyms?
exercise bikes..crosstrainers..
I will need to consider joining a gym then..

Cardio is anything that gets your heart rate up so at first a good long walk 3 or 4 times a week, progressing to a shuffle, then to a job or riding your bike or chasing the kids at the park and all over those darn monkey bar things.

:)

You don't need a gym (although they can be nice sometimes). A brisk walk up a hill or a game of frisbee will get your heart pumping just as well as any machine.

Good luck!

John

oh great, thanks for the quick reply guys.
With skipping, I can only skip 3 minutes max..
I have stopped jogging ever since I've started swimming.
I think I should get back to it and stop swimming for a while??
When I was in shape, I used to play basketball often.. basketball is the one to cure

You absolutely HAVE to quit the sugary drinks. Even fruit juice with `no added sugar' sometimes has things like pear syrup, which is loaded with sugar but manages to slip away from being classed as such.

I think changing your routines is the way to go, you can build up your swimming fitness to a point where it doesn't really strain you, but if you go jogging it exercises other muscles and keeps your body from getting too used to it. Kind of like if you never increased the weights you were lifting, you would stop seeing any improvement.

My meals for the day:

Cereal
low fat fruit bars
salad with low fat dressing and low fat croutons and low fat tuna

Dinner
normal meal, but try to watch out what I am eating.. so it won't be mcdonalds or kfc.

Pretty much cut out all the sweet drinks already..

It must be the exercise or what I am currently eating is not right.

I went to buy a basketball and went to shoot some hoops for 1hr.
I might replace that instead of swimming for a while..what I want is to lose few kgs of weight not trying to build a better shape on my body

do not look at the ingredients for now.

LOOK FOR THE NUMBER OF CALORIES.

go to a place with a calorie calculator.

find out how many calories u need per day (BMR)

then, say u need 2000 cals -> either eat 1800 cals and burn 200 or eat 1600 cals. OR eat 2200 cals and burn 600.

if u do that ull be losing 1 pound or so per week.

most people, when they start a diet, think that if they just eat "healthy foods" they'll lose weight.

NO!

u can eat bananas and gain weight, vegetables and gain FAT, etc.

its all about the calories.

once u get the numbers right, u need to start looking at what types of foods u need, etc.

but for now, my suggestion is -> watch the calories, not the ingredients.

let me know how u do after a week

this doesnt sound too good...

u have to eat 6-7 times a day

eat meals consisting of approx. 400 calories.

400 * 6 = 2400 calories.

thats good to start with.

and as i can see, ur eating all these low fat foods which contain A TON of sugar.

let me tell u something

sugar is worse than fat.

fat doesnt make u fat, excess calories do.

the fat u eat is not the fat in ur body.

its 2 totally different things.

another thing, running is better than swimming

swimming would be perfect after you've lost a ton of weight (for body definition)

run 2 miles everyday cept for sundays or every other day for the first week

after that run 3 miles (NO BEING LAZY!)

3 miles burns around 450 calories.

so if u eat say 2400 calories and burn those 450 u'll end up with about 2000 calories which, im pretty sure, is a lot less than what ur body needs. therefore u'll burn more calories than u consume per day ending up losing weight.

carbs give your body the energy but if they are not burnt off, the excess energy will be stored inside your body and you will see your weight start to climb.

If you really want to lose weight, you have to watch out for food rich in carbs and sugars.

Just as important as what you are eating is what time you are eating. Your metabolism is higher in the morning. (This is why studies prove working out in the morning yeilds better results). It is higher then than anytime during the day. A great rule of thumb is:

1. Eat breakfast like a king
2. Eat lunch like a prince
3. Eat dinner like a pauper

Of course, this does not mean a pile of pancakes with maple syrup all over them. This just means breakfast should be the biggest meal, and get lighter as you go through the day. It really does make a difference. Hope this helps!

Hi Inho

Thanks for your help..
Just a dumb question here.. how do I calculate calories?
and how do I know the food I am eating is worth this much calories?
cheers

Now I look at at the time when I missed breakfast for years.. I often miss it because I just don't have time.. I had to go uni or goto work.

lost 2kg!

Hi all
I just check the scale today
my weight it down to 70kg
usually it's about 72-72.5
but if I had been eating right and excercising the right way for the past few months, I could of lost more than that..

I won't stop yet!
