Sport Who cares about Sodium

I've posted something about this before but I'm going to do it again. I tend to shy away from anything that tastes salty, even if its not really. Like salted natty butter has 100ish g of sodium but to me it tastes really really salty and that bothers me so I'll get the stuff you make yourself at the store from non salted peanuts. Things like cottage cheese or canned green beans are the same sort of thing. they have a lot of salt in them! Does this matter? Does anyone else care about sodium to the extent of paranoia I have going on?! :D I get paranoid about water retention because my body retains fluid easily.

Nope doesnt bother me one bit.

As long as you are in the 3g range per day, you do not have high blood pressure or medical issues, or are competing, there is no need to worry as most sodium will be excreted through urine as long as you are consuming enough water per day.

I agree with LV, I don't pay any attention to salt content. As far as I know, if you don't have high blood pressure there is no reason to worry about it.

If you sweat a lot you may even need more minerals including sodium and others. I recall when I was playing football and in the service they used to give us salt tablets when we were sweating a lot in the belief that the extra soduim would help prevent heat stroke, although I think they have since changed that practice and just have athletes and military drink at least 8 ounces of water every 30 minutes.

I don't pay attention to my sodium very much at all. I'll glance at it if i'm looking at a nutrition label, but that's really about it. To be honest, my sodium is probably a little high, but i drink quite a bit of water (minimum 3 liters, usually 4+ liters)

I'm kind of a wierdo when it comes to sodium.

My body retains an unusual amount of fluid very easily, regardless of water intake (which is really high). I've had my kidney function checked, along with some other things and the doctor is pretty much stumped. My mom is the same way, the only thing the doctors can figure is that our bodies just naturally are more sensitive to sodium than others'.

So, I have to be really really careful about sodium intake or I will gain several pounds overnight (the most was 9 lbs in under 24 hours). My mom takes a fluid pill, but I prefer just to be super careful about salt.

Just like most of the people who posted, I don't really pay much (if any) attention to my sodium intake. I used to be pretty anal about it way back in the day when I bought into the "sodium retention" scare.

Salt makes food taste great, and I don't mind it one bit.

I've tracked my salt intake. On a clean diet, you almost need to salt your food a tiny bit to avoid a deficiency on a sweaty day.

its the peopel that live off processed foods, Lunchables, Hungry Man dinners, and McDonalds'....that see a gram or more of sodium in a single meal.

Drink plenty of water, and up potassium intake (bananas!), and you'll have nothing to worry about. Just assume there will be a ton of sodium when eating out. Sodium works wonders in making food taste better (including bread!).

I don't pay attention to sodium, and I don't think I need to, although sometimes I get a little crazy with salt. All things considered, I drink lots of water, so I think it's all good.

Holy crap, I just noticed your location Derwyddon. 3 friends and I have gone to Michigan the last couple years and stayed in his Grandparents old cabin in Ponshewaing, which is I'd guess 8 miles from Petoskey and about 12 from Harbor Springs. It is AWESOME up there, I just loved it. I'm sure you're mostly uninterested in my rant, hehe, but that's one of my favorite vacations ever...

Hahaha, "fudgies". Does that have something to do with how everyone goes apes#$t over that Mackinaw Island Fudge ice cream? Heh, it was quite good...

Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it! We already have the dates set, I believe it is the second week of June that we are staying, I can't wait!

It's my good friend and I, along with his brother and a friend of his, we all get along great. I will definitely hit you up, would make for a more interesting trip, no doubt! :D
